Valli created her reproduction with commercial cottons that capture the spirit of the original. Curved trapunto work creates movement while rickrack embellishments embroidered with perle cotton add interest. “This was a very satisfying quilt,” she refl ects. “I felt like I was having a conversation with Mamaw while I was making it.”

Zena utilized various fonts taken from a copyright-free Dover clip art book to create her alphabet. Uniquely embellished, the quilt includes tiny, padded ladybugs in the letters that comprise Zena’s name. She considers this quilt a decorated appliqué sampler. 1st Place – CHECKER, STRIPE & POLKADOT, 88½" x 77", Haruko Hiroe, Oyama, Tochigi, Japan Created in a class with Yoko Ueda, Haruko exhibits skill in the use of striped fabrics in her original design. Striped fabric in the central area follows the visual lines created across the quilt. Curved shapes in the border provide juxtaposition to the linear nature of the central area, while the stripe in the border scallops leads the eye both in and out of the central design. The quilt is machine quilted on a home sewing machine and features hand- embroidered accents.

2nd Place – CORAL REEF, 70" x 70", 3rd Place – STAR SIGN, 89” x 89”, Noriko Kobayashi, Keunan-ku, Yokohama, Japan Philippa Naylor, Beverley, East Yorkshire, England Noriko purchased the fabrics for this quilt on a trip to Philippa’s modern interpretation of traditional Lone Paducah. Delicate prints, cut to follow the fabric pattern, Star is set off by dense quilting. A variety of thread colors accent the narrow borders. Free-form cut, hand-dyed, cotton sateen leaves are satin-stitch outlined with 30-wt. rayon thread. Megaphone shapes in hand-painted green striped fabric connect the blocks, each of which is light on one side, dark on the other. Leaf motifs are quilted in the improvisa- tionally pieced sashing to continue the theme. The edge is fi nished with a facing.

1st Place – SPECTATORS, 66" x 68", Inge Mardal and Steen Hougs, Chantilly, France This dramatic composition was fi rst painted on white cotton, with the insects looking out at viewers as mutual spectators. After seeing a collection of antique Roman gems with shallow motifs engraved on the fl at surfaces, Inge and Steen were inspired to develop quilting techniques that would sculpt the surface of the fabric in a similar way. “The effect,” says Inge,“ is one of the quilt surface being embossed.”

She expresses concern about the gorillas’ endangered status. The background is foundation pieced in a crazy-quilt style. Nancy has been utilizing appliqué for 20 years. The hand quilting accentuates the expressive faces. “AQS is my favorite quilt show,” she says. “Paducah is wonderful and goes all out for the quilters!”

Schlieckau, Loganville, WI Honored by Judge Libby Lehman Sharyl’s original design featuring kaleidoscope-cut star centers complemented by metallic thread machine quilting won the admiration of judge Libby Lehman. “The use of metallic threads, one of my own loves, grabbed my attention,” Libby comments. “I hope the maker knows this would look terrifi c on my bed!”
