AmbAssAdor’s Foreword Ambassador’s Foreword I was delighted to be asked to become Honorary Chair of the BCCH in April following my arrival here as Her Majesty’s Ambassador. Working closely with and supporting British business has been a major part of my work over the last 10 years in places as diverse as Hong Kong and Bahrain.

My key objectives as Ambassador include strengthening the UK’s relations with Hungary, in particular bilateral business links. That is why I attach great importance to the Embassy`s relationship with the BCCH.

This has been a significant year from several perspectives.

In June, the British people voted for the UK to leave the EU. As Prime Minister Theresa May has made clear, Brexit means Brexit and we are determined to make a success of it. But while we are leaving the EU, we are not leaving Europe. We will want the strongest possible economic links with our European neighbours, as well as our close friends in North America, the Commonwealth and other important partners around the world. We must be more active, more outward facing, more energetic on the world stage than ever before. We hold fast to a vision of Britain that is respected abroad, tolerant at home, engaged in the world and working with our international partners to advance the prosperity and security of our nation for generations to come. Our country remains open for business. We are the same outward-looking, globally-minded, big-thinking country we have always been. The UK’s commitment to free trade is as firm as ever and we remain a leading global trading nation and open economy.

The UK is already the fifth largest foreign investor in Hungary (with our investments reaching £2.1 bn last year). Bilateral trade reached £3.7 bn in 2015. Both the UK and Hungary offer excellent business opportunities. There is huge business potential which I am keen to see British and Hungarian businesses exploiting. I therefore welcome the establishment in the UK of the Hungary-UK Business Council and the determination of the Hungarian authorities to further develop the bilateral economic relationship. As Prime Minister Orban has noted, the UK will be Hungary’s most important economic partner outside the EU.

Also this year, the BCCH celebrated its 25th anniversary. For a quarter of a century the Embassy and the Chamber have been working hard together to help British business and strengthen UK-Hungary commercial relations. In particular, I would highlight the establishment of the British Business Centre project, which aims to develop business networks and to facilitate new links between British and Hungarian SMEs.

This is a time of change and we have a great opportunity to seize the moment by working even more closely together to support the UK-Hungary commercial relationship. Let’s do it!

HE HMA Iain Lindsay OBE British Ambassador to Hungary

Letter From the ChAirmAn

Distinguished Members, Cherished Partners and Dear Friends of the BCCH,

Looking back on this past year, it is apparent that we have witnessed a great deal of change the past 12 months. Although we have left behind the years of recession and emerged into a new era of extensive business opportunities, international storms still rage and lie ahead that make forecasts for the future of the business world all the more challenging. Interesting times await not only the and Hungary – or Europe as a whole – but the entire world as well; staying one step ahead and quickly acknowledging the development of a new situation are mandatory nowadays.

Every year I announce a keyword to visualise the plans for the coming year. In 2016 the BCCH truly committed itself to the concept of BUILDING new partnerships and business opportunities for British and Hungarian SMEs, the state of our world is posing significant challenges that test our ability to remain on the path of prosperity. As such, we have to ADAPT to the trials of economic reshuffle; the will to change, the desire to reform and the commitment to maintain trusting relationships with partners and enterprises have to dictate our strategies.

H.E. Iain Lindsay OBE was appointed Her Majesty’s Ambassador to Hungary in March 2016, who consequently took upon the mantle of Honorary Chairman of the BCCH. The active presence and unwavering support of the British Embassy and His Excellency have proven to be invaluable in seeing to the efficient execution of our mission.

The Chamber continues to provide a superior platform for knowledge sharing, co-operation, trade and investment for more than 110 members of British, Hungarian and international business people and corporations, as well as a network of over 3000 contacts from approximately 20 sectors. The British Business Centre, launched two years ago, has provided professional support for approximately 500 British SMEs in various sectors and the total number of signed export contracts add up to approximately half a million pounds. Similarly, investing in youth is another area where we are actively engaged; the exciting uSchool programme was introduced this year, intending to teach high school students a ‘Startup mentality’ they can harness during their university years and careers. The Chamber was also accredited by the British Chambers of Commerce, the Investors in People and COBCOE. In line with our mission, the BCCH has spared no effort to carry out highly successful programmes; we have organised nearly a 1000 events in the past 25 years on ongoing economic, business, financial and educational topics, while also demonstrating our commitment to realising the potential of our team as they build their skills and improve their performance. Indubitably, our major achievements, the organisation of our events could not have been successful without a dedicated and passionate team. I mentioned our need to increase adaptability and live by the spirit of versatility to make headways; the BCCH team stands as a true testament to these principles. Through their hard work and a keen sense for detail, our projects were executed smoothly, and thus, an additional 39 events have been organised between last December and now.

The year of 2016 has laid the groundwork for a new economic and financial landscape where our adaptability to both its hazards and advantages will be put to the test. In September we celebrated the 25th Anniversary of the Chamber. Since the foundation of the BCCH, we have stood at the forefront of securing and protecting British-Hungarian business and trade interests. The ever-changing market has proven time and time again that our Chamber plays a significant role in helping British businesses entering and operating in Hungary. We firmly believe that whatever path the world takes in the next years, the Chamber will ADAPT accordingly and stand the test of time and continue its major contribution in redefining and facilitating the new relationship between the UK and Hungary. I am looking forward to continuing the work with the team and the Council for the remainder of the Chamber year and hope that this publication will serve our members and partners well in making the most of their BCCH membership. As always, we are open to our members’ feedback and suggestions to ensure that they receive the best service possible and benefit from being part of an ever-changing, evolving, and adapting organisation.

Bringing Businesses Together the ChamBer

The British Chamber of Commerce in Hungary was founded in 1991 by British investors. It represents British, Hungarian and international companies with the overarching principles of British business values and promotes trade and investment flows between the UK and Hungary. The Chamber provides its members with all kinds of opportunities to raise their company’s business profile and strengthen their competitiveness in the local and international market, such as various events, publications, Special Interest Groups, international and regional partnerships, business services through the knowledge and long-term local business experience of BCCH members and the Chamber itself, as well as special offers and discounts. The Chamber has celebrated its 25th anniversary this year. This is an enormous milestone for us. It has been an amazing journey so far, and we are grateful to be a part of it. The BCCH would like to express its gratitude towards their members and partners for their trust – we firmly believe that they are part of an organisation that is constantly improving and working towards better serving their needs. We look forward to the next 25 years and the tasks and challenges it will bring.

18 the ChaMber sPeCial areas of foCus

The British Chamber of Commerce in Hungary continued to change its ways and build on existing as well as potential partnerships and business opportunities in the past two years. Initiated in 2014, the concept of ‘BCCH 2.0’ developed into one of our most successful and extensive strategies yet. The BCCH prevailed in adapting its practices and methods to embrace innovation; new and revolutionary strategies can easily take root and develop into something spectacular, and it was no different with BCCH 2.0; it had all commenced with the opening of the British Business Centre in 2014, which by now has evolved into the tool that facilitated the continued growth of our members – both in size and numbers.

The main areas of focus in the BCCH 2.0 framework had proven to be quite prosperous and as such they persevered and developed in the year of 2016 as well: the prestigious CEO Dinners and SME Breakfasts, as well as other grand social events, provided us with magnificent opportunities to improve the services the Chamber offers to its members. This year, the chamber celebrated the 25th Anniversary of its founding on 28 September 2016, which was our most prominent event for 2016. In all those years, from that fateful day in 1991 when a group of distinguished business people convened to found the British Chamber of Commerce in Hungary until now, a quarter century later, the Chamber, in accordance with its mission, contributed majorly to promoting trade and investment flow between the UK and Hungary. The 25th Gala was a brilliant venue for outstanding networking opportunities as well as an incubator for future, defining partnerships and co-operation initiatives.

The BCCH CEO Dinners event series – exclusive VIP sessions for a selected group of business leaders – continued its excellence in 2016 as well, with remarkable discussions and presentations set in the framework of luxurious dinners. Knowledge-sharing and solution-seeking discourses on relevant business topics concerning the Hungarian economy remained the focal points of the six dinners organized this year, and thanks to the hosts, BCCH Chairman Mr Vazul Tóth and the Management of the Chamber, we could welcome several C-level executives from various industry sectors of our member companies as well as other high-ranking guests. This unique event series provides impressive networking opportunities, where attendees can gain first-hand business information on hot topics with no press presence.

As promised last year, the British Business Club has taken over the domain of aiding businesses in making the most of their activities and networking within and without Budapest. Over the course of 2016, it has become a valuable resource of BCCH and British Business Centre operations – as well as that of all involved enterprises. The events of the British Business Club, jointly organised by the Chamber and the British Business Centre, dived into the challenges facing the Hungarian economy as well as the low global growth rates and shallow post-2008 recovery prospects from a British perspective.

The Chamber also continued its popular SME Breakfast series: launched in 2014, the breakfasts were once again organised in association with our Foundation Member partner, FirstMed. With the aim of providing leading service for small and medium-sized enterprises at its core, the SME Breakfasts of 2016 focused on discussing online marketing tools and EU grant possibilities for the near future, seeking to offer sound solutions and smart strategies for the founders and managers of successful SMEs in Hungary who are willing to share their experience and expertise. Together we can form and attain new frameworks that could help all actors within the SME sector.

The BCCH introduced its “Same Boat – Different Generations” or “How to harness XYZ values and resolve the differences to achieve success?” in April to discuss generation differences and find solutions to issues arising out of age gaps. Age-diverse workplaces are often characterised by tension, false expectations and mismanaged communication; with this conference, our aim was to clarify the roots of the problem and suggest tools and methods that improve morale, performance and organisational results for the benefit of all involved, regardless of age.

Carrying on with the new strategy and thus the improvement of our services, these past years the BCCH has revitalised its communication towards members, partners and the general public with a structured communication plan. We have continued the provision of improved electronic correspondence, ensuring the information flows smoothly. The Chamber proceeded with its intent of harnessing the spheres of social media, increasing its activity and strengthening its presence on platforms and outlets such as Facebook (www.facebook.com/britchamhu), LinkedIn (www.linkedin.com/company/british-chamber-of-commerce-in- hungary), and Twitter (www.twitter.com/BritChamHu). We cordially invite you to be part of our ever-growing online community!

The British Business Centre works in partnership with the Department of International Trade (DIT) on the Overseas Business Networks initiative (OBNi). Launched in late 2012 by the Prime Minister, the OBNi aims to transform the support available for British SMEs seeking to do business in high-growth, hard-to-access markets across the world. Together with DIT the centre works with UK-based businesses to ensure their success in international markets. The overseas delivery partner’s primary goal is to assist small and medium-sized businesses in obtaining access to new business opportunities in Hungary. This unique government support initiative is designed to create entrepreneurial export opportunities primarily through the digital business platform posting relevant export opportunities for UK-based small and medium- sized operations to respond to and that aspire to benefit from the virtually untapped Hungarian market, a market that is already proving highly receptive to the best that British business has to offer. The British Business Centre also provides a networking hub with superb business facilities to match from which British SME businesses can build lasting local relationships gaining a proper route into market whilst also further assisting to strengthen their established connections. It offers attractive subsidised rates for its commercial services to both local and British businesses; the Centre boasts an exceptional venue for seminars, training programmes, meetings, including a boardroom not to mention extensive workshop space. We had a rather busy December in 2015; after our SME breakfast, which was jointly organised with FirstMed, and another spectacular event within our CEO Dinner series with Mr Jost Lammers, the CEO of Budapest Airport, we held a Culture Club in association with Funzine that took place on 7 December. ‘The Culture Club - The Survivor’s Shadow – The Life and Work of El Kazovsky’ offered our members and partners a guided tour combined with an exclusive reception in the Hungarian National Gallery. El Kazovsky was one of the most original and potent Hungarian artists of the late 20th Century. This exhibition of nearly 400 of his works was intended to offer a more precise fine art history of everything that El Kazovsky left behind after his painfully early death. During the evening, bottles of Hungarian wines, coffee specialities, tasty treats and other delicious sweets were provided to the esteemed guests.

After the Culture Club, the BCCH and British Business Centre organised the Great British Christmas Market from the 8 to 10 December in the Central Market Hall. Among the exhibitors, one could become acquainted with the British Pantry, Usborne Books, Dynamit Kft.,

Mr Mike Kelly conducted an Anniversary Quiz where precious prizes awaited our winners, offered by our generous sponsors: Boscolo Budapest, Forbes, and Marks&Spencer. Of course, a birthday party without cake would be nothing but a lacklustre meeting; hence our guests could also enjoy a slice of our Union Jack- decorated cake after a tasty buffet dinner had whetted their appetites for the sugary delight. The dinner was followed by a high-quality wine, cafe and beer tasting. Simultaneously, our guests were served cocktails and other refreshments, beverages and soft drinks, also due to the benevolence of our sponsors: Tesco, Heineken, Nespresso and Vino-X.
