RRC Yo-yo Selected to Promote Learning at International Skills Competition You might say that Victor Butts has seen his share of ups and downs. That’s because the devoted Manufac- turing Technology instructor has put more than 30,000 yo-yos into the hands of students across Canada since

2001. Come September, an additional 50,000 will be | RED distributed to attendees of the 2009 World Skills

Competition. A Red River College Publication

What started as a project designed to teach Red River College students about manufacturing processes has morphed into a unique tool — one that promotes Manitoba’s largest institute of applied learning while raising the profile of skilled trade professions. For the last eight years, Victor has given out RRC- branded yo-yos at career fairs, during skills competitions, and in middle school classrooms.

And there’s a compelling reason for the initiative’s enduring popularity. “We lived in Fort Garry,” Betty’s daughter Sheila recalls, “and each day Mom would head across town to the Institute’s campus on Notre Dame Avenue. She excelled in her studies while keeping our household going.”

A graduate of the Institute’s inaugural Library Technician program, Betty flourished in her new career at libraries with St. Paul’s College and the federal government’s Agriculture Research Station at the .

After Betty died suddenly in 2000, Sheila and her father, Jack, a veterinarian, made an endowment to Red River Col- lege for an annual award to assist a mature student in the Library and Information Technology program.

“We felt this was the right way to honour my mother, who benefited so much from her library studies at ‘MIT’ as we referred to the Institute.”

It became a tradition for Sheila and her father to attend the College’s annual awards ceremony each April. It was a pleasure to meet the award recipients and jointly present the award in tribute to Betty.

After Jack Andrich passed away in December 2005, Sheila | RED recommitted their support to the award by making a second donation to the College in the form of listed securities, just

The Betty Andrich Memorial Awards provide two entrance awards for first-year students, two awards for students in their second year of studies as well as a graduating award. Along with being a full-time mature student and achieving a high academic performance, volunteer activity is considered, reflecting the value Betty Andrich placed on volunteerism.

Sheila, who retired in 2008 following her own 20-year career as a librarian with the University of Manitoba, looks forward

to presenting the awards once again in 2009. | 15
