Environmentalists Collect 25kgs of Waste From Cleethorpes Beach

More than 25kgs of litter and waste was collected from a 110-metre stretch of Cleethorpes Beach, by keen environmentalists from Tollbar MAT Sixth Form College and Reynolds Academy.

The event saw some of the youngest and oldest students from across the Tollbar Multi Academy Trust working together to clean up and survey the stretch of beach. This was part of the Annual Beachwatch Programme, organised by the Marine Conservation Society.

A record of all waste items was carefully collated to help the Conservation Society build a picture of the health of our seas, shoreline and marine wildlife, with the results being published in early 2020. Year 13 student Melvin Mensah takes part in the annual Marine Conservation Society’s survey of marine pollution.

4 | Tollbar MAT Sixth Form College Tollbar MAT Sixth Form College and Reynolds Academy have taken part in this survey for a number of years and Darren Green, Deputy Head of Tollbar MAT Sixth Form, said: “The data collected by our students and younger pupils over the years is beginning to form incredibly useful evidence for the MCS in their work lobbying for action over marine conservation.”

Year 12 students Kacey Buckley, Ella Holness and Olivia Simpson help to clean up the beach.

Nicole Gabbitas, Sixth Form Pastoral Lead, added: “Beachwatch has firmly established itself in our annual calendar, and our students are always keen to support such a worthwhile cause. It is also wonderful to see the youngest and oldest students from the Tollbar MAT Family Of Academies working closely together, and showing that we can all make a positive difference to the world in which Year 12 students Sultana Zahan, Emma Taylor-Lonsdale and we live.” Carima Salameh record their findings for the Beachwatch survey.

Year 12 and 13 Sixth Formers interested in a career in the Royal Navy were offered the opportunity to visit HMS Grimsby when it docked in its namesake port.

Hosted by ABP, the Royal Navy minesweeper arrived for a two-day visit to receive a reaffirmation of the Freedom of the Borough, at a ceremony at Grimsby Town Hall, to honour its link with the town. The students were joined by Tollbar Academy Year 10 and 11 students for a tour of the ship, with the chance to discuss with naval staff the opportunities for careers at sea.

Linda Willoughby, Curriculum Leader for Citizenship at Tollbar Academy, said: “The students learnt about the work that the Royal Navy does in protecting the UK, as well as the other roles it performs across the world. They had a full tour of the ship, which included a tour of the bridge and a visit to the compression chamber.”

6 | Tollbar MAT Sixth Form College Various crew members told the students about their experiences, including the divers, who explained their role in submerging 60 metres to deal with explosive devices that had been detected. Students were also able to look at the diving equipment and gun emplacements. There was very positive feedback from the students about the visit, with many now looking to their future careers with great enthusiasm.

Year 12 student Ella Restall said:

“It was fantastic, and a great experience to talk to staff and see what it’s like to be on a Royal Navy boat. Considering it is something I plan on doing as a career in the future, it was really eye opening into what life will be like on board a ship.” Year 12 and 13 students visit the gun deck. 10 | Tollbar MAT Sixth Form College Youth Elections Give Students A Voice For Social Change

Students took part in the Youth Parliament Elections ‘Your Voice, Your Vote’ campaign, which ensures that they have a voice in and outside of college.

Sixth Form students were joined by younger students from the main Academy, who had participated in debates in lessons and tutorial sessions, discussing issues which will be raised at Youth Parliament. Everyone was then able to cast their vote on the issues that they feel are most important.

The UK Youth Parliament provides opportunities for 11-18 year olds to use their voice to bring about social change through meaningful representation and campaigning. Last year, Tollbar Sixth Form students saw the highest voting turn out in the region, collectively prioritising the issues of knife crime and mental health. The result of the voting saw a range of strategies implemented, including knife crime ‘Question Times’ with Humberside Police, North East councillors and managers.

Linda Willoughby, Curriculum Leader for Careers and Personal Development at Tollbar Academy, said:

“It is important that all students get the chance to vote for issues that affect their lives. The students already have a voice within the Academy, as we have an elected School Council. Members are voted in by students each year, and these students represent the student body. The Youth Parliament ensures that they are heard outside of school too.”

Tollbar MAT Sixth Form College | 15 Field Trips Enrich Learning for Students

Field trips are a valuable part of education, and A Level Geography students visit different venues throughout the academic year as part of their A Level course work.

Year 12 students visited York City Centre to develop their sampling and data collection skills in preparation for their Non- Examined Assessment. They carried out different methods across the city centre, including pedestrian counts, central and non-central functions, as well as rateable values of shops to establish if core businesses and services are grouped together. Students were then able to practise a range of complex presentation techniques including isolines and choropleth maps.

Geography teacher, Laura Shreeve commented:

“We get out on fieldwork early in the course, which is great for integration of students within the group, enabling them to get to know each other better and develop a strong sense of camaraderie amongst them. Students work in small, independent groups, as it is essential for them to move away from the teacher-led fieldwork undertaken at GCSE, thus enhancing their teamwork and communication skills.” Year 12 students Robyn Greenway and Kiera Walker carry out research as part of their A Level geography visit to York city centre.

16 | Tollbar MAT Sixth Form College Perseverance Pays Off As Kickboxer Wins Medals At Prestigious Tournament

Year 12 student Evan Balch achieved his dream of winning a medal at one of the largest and most prestigious kickboxing tournaments in the world, The Irish Open.

The Irish Open is an official WAKO (World Association of Kickboxing Organisations) World Cup and is part of the WAKO World Series of events. More than 4,000 kickboxers entered the event in County Dublin, where the kickboxing styles of Point Fighting, Light Contact, Full Contact, K1 Rules, and Musical Forms were carried out over four days of inspirational kickboxing. All proceeds were donated to the ISPCC, a registered Irish charity.

Lincolnshire Martial Arts Academy was ranked 118th out of 310 teams from around the world at the competition. Evan, who is studying A levels in Maths, Chemistry and Physics, was ranked second in the UK for his age and weight category in Light Continuous, and fourth in Points, receiving two bronze medals.

The Irish Open is widely considered to be more difficult than any other international tournament, because of the sheer number and variety of entrants.

Evan explained this challenge:

“The Irish Open is an open tournament, so in any one category you will find the first, second, third, fourth top fighters Proud Tollbar MAT Sixth Form College Year 12 student Evan Balch with his Kickboxing bronze medals after competing at the Irish Open. from countries all around the world competing. That for me is why the Irish Open is a very difficult competition, especially for the technical value of each competitor. They all have a completely different style of fighting to the next, who may be from the other side of the world, and you must adapt to it in order to beat them. For example, in my Points Fighting category, there were 38 fighters of all nationalities, and I fought my way through to a bronze medal. Other categories such as the Junior Grand Champion had 75 entries and the Men’s Grand Champion had almost 100. That is why it is immensely difficult to get on the podium in an advanced category at this competition, and it has taken me seven years to finally do it.”
