7 2 AHOLA Ahola exhibits the life of two artists, painter Venny Soldan-Brofeld and her husband, writer . They were the first artists to settle in the area, thus started the famous Lake Tuusula artists’ community. They rented the villa from Järvenpää manor and lived in it for 14 years. Now Ahola serves as a museum depicting the family’s life and the artist community. Ahola is closed in the winter time.

1 AINOLA, HOME OF JEAN AND AINO SIBELIUS Ainola was the home of composer, Jean Sibel- ius and his family from 1904. This log-built villa was designed by the renowed Finnish architect, Lars Sonck. Ainola was named after the mas- ter composer's wife, Aino. Sibelius fell in love with the natural beauty of the area and lived here most of his life. You can still experience the silence which the composer considered in- dispensable for his work. The grave of the com- poser and his wife Aino is located in the garden. Ainola is closed in the winter time.

8 10 ALEKSIS KIVI MEMORIAL COTTAGE A significant national monument in which the Finnish national writer Aleksis Kivi spent his last months in the care of his brother’s family. This very modest cottage, where Aleksis Kivi passed away, reminds us of how the area looked before the famous villas were built and artists’ commu- nity was formed.

9 ARTIST’S HOME ERKKOLA Erkkola is a charming villa built for the poet, J. H. Erkko. It was built in 1902 and it was designed and built by local artist, Pekka Halonen (of Ha- losenniemi) together with his brother Antti. Erk- kola is a lovely example of log-built house and it is nowadays a museum that in particular fea- tures illustration-related exhibitions.

10 13 ANTI-AIRCRAFT DEFENCE MUSEUM The Finnish anti-aircraft defence museum pre- sents the development of Finnish anti-aircraft defence all the way from 1925 to today. It show- cases a globally unique and diverse collection of anti-aircraft systems, and, for example, a MIG-3 fighter that was shot down in 1941. The muse- um comprises two large exhibition halls, a ser- vice centre, Captain’s house – an official military residence from the 1700s (which is also the old- est building in Tuusula), as well as an extensive outdoor exhibition area.

11 41 KLAAVOLA MUSEUM OF LOCAL HISTORY AND CULTURE Klaavola Museum brings alive the area’s rich rural past. The museum tells the story of the local farm- ing family. Visitors can take a nostalgic trip back in time in Klaavola's two-hundred-year-old main building. The rooms are decorated in the style of 1920s to 1940s and the outside buildings have a collection of farming memorabilia. 8 LOTTA MUSEUM Lotta Museum has impressive exhibitions, pro- fessionally guided tours and different events. The Museum’s main exhibition, The Story of the Lotta – Always Demand the Most from Yourself is an experientially focused and touching exhi- bition based on personal experiences of Lottas. The exhibition provides a comprehensive history of the Lotta organization and the activity of Lot- tas. Visitors can also find out what kind of influ- ence the organisation had on the post-war so- ciety in Finland.

12 4 SUVIRANTA - STUDIO RESIDENCE OF ARTIST EERO JÄRNEFELT Suviranta is the former studio residence of paint- er Eero Järnefelt built in 1901. He was one of he members of the Lake Tuusula artists’ communi- ty and brother of Aino Sibelius. The heart of Su- viranta is Järnefelt’s studio. During the guided tour you will learn about Järnefelt family as well as the art in the house.

Suviranta is open for groups from May to Sep- tembr on Tuesdays, Thursday and Sundays be- tween 11 am and 3 pm. In August, guided tours for individual visitors are available in English every Thursday at 2 pm. Pre-booking required!

11 TUUSULA CHURCH Tuusula’s beautiful grey cruciform church was built in 1734, and the bell tower, in 1746. The church is very simply decorated and a devout atmosphere is created with stained-glass win- dows and an altarpiece dating back to 1850s. Aleksis Kivi and Pekka Halonen are buried in the small churchyard.

Fjällbo Park is located on the banks of Lake Tuusu- la, close to Aleksis Kivi Memorial Cottage. A log- built villa used to stand proudly on the top of the hill but unfortunately it burned down in the 1980s. An old summer house and stone steps lead down to the lake to remind us of the olden days. An outdoor fireplace and some benches are located by the lake side. A children’s playground is located by the carpark.

You gain spectacular views over Lake Tuusula from Sarvikallio recreational area. Sarvikallio was frequently visted by the artist community, who used to row across the lake from their villas. The highest point reaches 25 metres above lake level.

Two marked hiking and cycling trails (2 km and 3 km) take you through a varied woodland land- scape with some viewpoints over the lake. Both trails lead you to the campfire site. d3

18 VANHANKYLÄNNIEMI NATURE TRAIL

A marked nature trail begins from Vanhankylä Manor and circulates the area. The whole trail covers a distance of 4 km, but it can be walked in two parts. The trail passes picnic places, van- tage points with lovely lake views and a beach.

22 LEMMENLAAKSO NATURE RESERVE JÄRVENPÄÄ Lemmenlaakso protected area, established in 1991, is situated by the river Kerava, between Vanha Lahdentie, Sipoontie and Skosterintie. The total surface area is 94 hectares. There is a parking area, marked trails and a campfire site. Especial- ly interesting flowers bloom in the spring time.

RUOTSINKYLÄ VILLAGE TUUSULA In Ruotsinkylä village, in south Tuusula, both domestic and foreign trees been studied for al- most a century. Easy-to-walk hiking trails invite visitors to experience exotic woods, which cover about 450 hectares. The Forest Educational Path (2 km) with mobile tasks teaches you about the forest environment and management. A dense network of paths invites families, dog walkers, joggers and mountain cyclists alike. During the winter time, a cross country ski trail meanders through the forest.
