He has not forgot- ten or abandoned them in their time of need; on the contrary, He reinforces The Covenant made with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Then in the second reading (1 Cor 10:1-6, 10-12), Saint Paul warns us about overconfidence and the need to fight temptation and sin that keeps us from God: “Let anyone who thinks he is standing upright watch out lest he fall!” But he also reminds us again that “No test has been sent to you that has not been sent to all men.” God will not let us be tested beyond our strength. As I reflected on today’s readings, I recalled as a cancer survivor how reassuring and helpful our faith can be dur- ing our own, personal times of suffering and stress. According to the National Cancer Institute, an estimated 1.7 million new cases of cancer were diagnosed in the U.S. during 2018. For Rhode Island, the estimate for 2019 is for 6,540 new cases in 2019. It is so prevalent a disease that if we haven’t experienced it ourselves we typically know someone close who has. Fortunately for those now diagnosed with cancer, the treatments for the most part, have become less harsh and more focused than in the past with much improved survival rates for many of the cancers. Still, the shock of being diagnosed with cancer and the ensuing rounds of treatments, testing, side-affects, and anxiety over outcome presents significant challenges to the patient – both physical and psychological. Individuals deal with these challenges in many different ways. As a fun pastime I have long dabbled in writing lyrics for songs, poems, tributes, etc. So in my case, shortly after being diagnosed with prostate cancer and starting nine weeks of radiation treatments, I decided to write down my thoughts and feelings as I went along. Writing helped me to express what I was thinking and feeling at the time, and in coping with my situation. The result was the following poem I entitled “In Your Hands.”

Radiation now attacking In Your Hands This monster deep inside of me, My body dealing with the side effects I’ve got to get on top of this Down and discouraged Caused by the therapy. Get back to being me, And riddled with fear, I lean on you now The doctors have told me Hard to see to the other side Like a giant Oak tree. What I dreaded to hear. When you just want to run and hide. Hard to see the light In your hands Need to start the treatments With the end nowhere in sight. I am safe from all around me. While a cure still possible - In your hands I’ll stay, A course of action planned Putting fear behind me Hoping one day to fly away free. At the nearby hospital. I struggle through each day, Your smiles and your laughter Whenever I look back on this Skilled Doctors and Technicians Showing me the way. I warmly will recall, Form my new team, All your help and kindness With years of experience I’ve put my life in your hands That got me through it all. In aiming their beam. And pray I’ll be all right, As we’ve come together To wage this deadly fight.

A key scriptural lesson for me today is that God does not abandon us in times of great need and suffering. He hears our “moans and cries” and is there for us. In the “Daily Reflections for Lent” booklets handed out in Church, the author Mary DeTurris Poust states: “If God feels far away, guess who moved.” And finally, in keeping with the theme of St. Paul today that “God will not let us be tested beyond our strength,” I don’t think that means that we “go it alone” without help. We can seek comfort and support from family, friends, co-workers, local support groups, and of course, from our faith in God. MASS SCHEDULE Saturday: 5 p.m. Sunday: 8, 9:15, 11:30 a.m.
