4 5 Part of a report published on the Lincoln Diocese website on the Synod Meeting on Saturday, 8th May. The Lincoln Diocesan Synod met on Saturday 8 May via Zoom. This was our second formal meeting held virtually (following an informal meeting of mem- bers in July 2020). Members and Officers came together across several Zoom screens with technology on hand for electronic votes and online presentations. The meeting was successfully chaired by Canon Nigel Bacon (Chair of the House of Laity), who took us through a range of subject matters, where the style of presentation and discussion meant that there was opportunity for thoughtful consideration and debate prior to decisions. Following the Easter season, it seemed appropriate that much of the agenda felt like coming out into the light from the darkness of the tomb. As a Synod, it was crucial to recognise the suffering and grief so many of us have gone through and the faithful, creative response of so many to the challenges of lockdown and Covid-19. The annual accounts and finance report gave a strong sense of the challenges we have been facing over the last year or so. The Re- sourcing Sustainable Church report offered, after huge amounts of detailed work, widespread consultation and subsequent rework, a practical map for how the in greater Lincolnshire can continue to proclaim the abundant life and unquenchable, redeeming hope the resurrection opens up. Bishop’s Address The , the Rt Revd , opened Synod and called for a pause, as a moment to acknowledge the ministry of Robert Hardy, who was the Bishop of Lincoln from 1987 – 2001 and had been one of Lin- coln’s most distinguished bishops. The Bishop then went on to describe the difficulty he will feel in relinquishing his duty and responsibility as Diocesan Bishop at the end of the year, as previ- ously announced. He confirmed that ‘bishops come and bishops go’, as do our clergy, but the laypeople that together form the People of God, will always re- main. As a synod and as a diocese, the Bishop asserted the need for us to come together as a primary assembly, to plan our future in a way that allows space for God to act in our lives, individually and as a community and lead us forward. The Bishop confirmed that the , as it is currently organised, is no longer sustainable, and that doing nothing was simply not an option.

6 Promulgation of Amending Canons No. 40 and 41 Canon Nigel Bacon gave formal notice to Diocesan Synod that following the November sessions of General Synod, Amending Canons No. 40 and 41 be made, promulged and executed. It was confirmed that Amending Canon No. 40 made provision relating to religious communities and Amending Canon No. 41 made general miscellaneous amendments to the Canons.

Resourcing Sustainable Church: A Time to Change - Together The , the Rt Revd Dr , introduced the full work- ing plan to Diocesan Synod members. The Bishop reminded members of the history of the project since July 2019, when the budget was presented to Synod and we recognised that we had an annual deficit which was simply unsustainable. Following this, the RSC lever groups were set up to cover the key areas of Deployment, Growth, Costs, Assets and Parish Share, with a Steering Group established to ensure everything came together. These groups included almost 60 people from across the diocese, and their initial thinking was presented to Synod in July of 2020. Synod almost unanimously supported this general direction of travel. A series of consultations was then held over Autumn where representatives of every benefice were invited to join in and over 500 people were involved. This led to a draft document which was then circulated in advance of a second round of consultations in the spring. Bishop David spoke of a moving concern felt by participants for the church in general as well as for their specific church, but there was also a recognition of the problem and the need for us to grapple these issues so we can become the type of church we need to be. Synod then engaged in an open debate with contributions from various mem- bers who voiced support, raised questions and confirmed their worries. Mem- bers particularly noted the need to ensure appropriate administrative support for clergy and for lay people operating in these areas, concerns about timeframe in relation to making decisions during a pandemic and sugges- tions about regular updates at Diocesan Synod from the planned Implemen- tation Group. The leaders of the Steering Group responded to the points raised in turn, be- fore a virtual ‘show of hands’ vote was taken. Diocesan Synod voted clearly in favour of receiving and welcoming the report and commended it to the dio- cese, accepted the report's recommendations 1-15 and directed the Bishop's Council of Diocesan Trustees and the Diocesan Secretary to proceed with their implementation, and finally endorsed the commitments set out in the report and requested all ministers and PCCs of the diocese to join with it in abiding by them. The full report can be found on the Lincoln Diocese website

7 FAVOURITE BIBLE VERSES AND STORIES

During the past very difficult 18 months we wonder how many of our readers have heard some verses from the Bible or remembered a story from the Bible that has given them some comfort or hope. The soothing words of Psalm 23 are often heard at funerals and hopefully give the mourners a sense of peace. Here are a few examples and passages that have been chosen by people who subscribe to the Bible Society: Paul Williams, Chief Executive of Bible Society chose Proverbs Chapter 3 verses 5 and 6: “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct they paths.” He comments: “It was a verse my grandfather gave to me repeatedly. Almost every time I left his house, he would say it to me. Over the years this verse, framed within a life of wis- dom, has comforted, challenged and rebuked me. In part, I owe my love for the Bible to my grandfather; it was his legacy to me.” The following words are well worth pondering on: Isaiah 40 verse 31: But those who look to the Lord will win new strength Psalm 119 verse 105: Thy word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light on my path 2 Timothy 1 verse 12: I know who it is in whom I have trusted and am confident in his power to keep safe what he has put into my charge. Jeremiah 31 verse 13: I will turn their mourning into gladness. I will relent and give them joy to outdo their sorrow. Romans 8 verses 38 and 39: For I am convinced that there is nothing in death or life, in the realm of spirits or superhuman powers, in the world as it is or the world as it shall be, in the forces of the universe, in height or depths – nothing in all creation that can separate us form the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. In difficult and sad times, many people turn to the Bible to seek comforting words. During the past year many people, who might not normally have gone to church services, have tuned in to online services on Facebook, You Tube, radio and television. It is true that in times of great sadness and in times of great joy many turn to a church that is able to offer dignity, compassion, a shared faith and spiritual love. To end may I offer a personal memory from my childhood. I remember hearing this verse every week at school, at the end of our assembly on a Friday morning: “And now my friends, all that is true, all that is noble, all that is just and pure, all that is lovable and gracious, whatever is excellent and admirable – fill all your thoughts with these things.”

8 9 Belfry News

Assuming the current improvements in the fight against Covid are sustained, our band of ringers should soon be back in action. We are lucky in not losing touch with any of our mem- bers, Doug, Terry and Elaine from Sutton St James, Jane, Jill, Janet, Angela, Malcolm and myself from Gedney. All have enjoyed good health during the past 15 months for which we are thankful. However to ensure our bells are kept ringing we need to recruit more ringers. So who rings bells?

Men, Women, Boys, Girls, Young, Old, and one need not be big, strong, musical, mathemati- cal, though in my opinion a musical ear and a sense of rhythm does help in achieving what ringers call "good striking"-that is even timing between each bell's sound.

Ringing offers exercise of body and mind, social activity, travel to many towers and a sense of achievement .

Anyone interested please give me a ring on 01406 365408.

NEWS

The APCM for the four churches in our Benefice was held on Wednesday, 19th May at 7.30 p.m. in Gedney Church. Following an introduction and prayers led by Revd Rosamund Seal, we had separate parish meetings to go through the normal APCM Agendas. Eight members of our Fleet congregation attended.

It was delightful to welcome Sue Taylor back, following her long absence because of ill health. Even better news is that Sue expressed an interest in taking on the role of Churchwarden again and, following the usual voting procedures, she was unanimously elected to be the Fleet churchwarden. We also acknowledge that Alan, Sue’s husband, will be happy to play a supportive role with church activities.

Peter Bush (PCC Treasurer) presented the Treasurer’s Report for 2020, which all PCC members had seen a while ago. These had been audited, formally accepted and a sin- cere vote of thanks was given to Peter for his efficiency and careful management of the accounts throughout the year.

The Annual Report had been compiled by Gill Graper (PCC Secretary) and explained the activities and events in 2020, which had been an exceptionally difficult year for all churches. Fleet had not managed to have any services after the beginning of March, both because of the Covid pandemic and because an area of roof, which had been sto- len, needed to be replaced.

The Electoral Roll has not altered and there remain 25 members on the roll. Anne Corke is the Electoral Roll Officer and if anyone wishes to have their name added to this roll they should speak to Anne.

At present we do not have a Deanery Synod Representative or a Safeguarding Officer. The current PCC members were all re-elected and Gill Graper and Peter Bush agreed to continue in their present roles.

11 FLEET CHURCH NEWS

Before coming together for a Joint Meeting with the other parishes we had been asked to consider forming a joint PCC; how we envisaged our own church being categorised in the new Diocesan strategy ‘Resourcing Sustainable Church’ ; and what we would like our pattern of worship to be. These have all been difficult questions to consider and, without a for the Mid Elloe parishes, members of the Fleet PCC would wish to record how difficult the future looks for our parish, for the Benefice, the Deanery and the Diocese. There is a determination to keep going, do what we can, work together and hopefully be guided and supported by the Diocese. The following is a short extract from a letter received from the Bishops on 20/05/2021: Resourcing Sustainable Church: A time to change - together is more a set of principles outlining a way of working that we want to put into practice together, over the next months, in conversation and dialogue with each other, as we seek a way forward for us to see our diocesan vision of being a ‘healthy, vibrant, sustainable church transforming lives in Greater Lincolnshire’ being made real in every single corner of the diocese. Further information may be found on the Diocesan website. On other pages in the magazine there is an extract from the deliberations of the Dioce- san Synod held on 8th May. By the end of our two and half hour APCM, it was clear that there is much work that needs to be done to ensure Fleet Church survives – we would wish it to become a Lo- cal Community Church, rather than a Celebration Church (which would only have about 6 services a year for special occasions) or the worst case scenario is that the church would be closed forever. The future of the Benefice Magazine was also discussed. It would be really good to have more input from different groups in our villages eg. schools, youth groups, clubs, Parish Council activities etc. The Mid Elloe Magazine has always tried to be a commu- nity magazine rather than a church magazine, so we do hope there will be support from the wider community to ensure the magazine can survive. We appreciate the financial help from our advertisers and are very grateful that they continue to support us. For a final piece of good news: Fleet Church has been awarded £1000 of funding from Tesco Bags of Help. This is to support mission work in the community and children’s events during the coming 12 months. We hope to organise some events, once we are quite sure that all Covid restrictions are lifted and we can welcome greater numbers of people into the church again. Gill Graper PCC Secretary

FLEET YARD SALE: A GREAT SUCCESS

Saturday, 22nd May dawned cloudy and rather chilly, but at least it kept dry and the village of Fleet/Fleet Hargate was busy with stallholders setting out an incredible range of stalls throughout many of the streets. Stallholders paid £10 towards the Playing Field Fund and the money raised at each of the stalls was for different charities and different people.

The stall for St Mary Magdalene Church, Fleet was outside the churchyard with a wide range of bric a brac, books, cakes and preserves. The latter two commodities sold out by lunch time and the PCC was delighted to raise £232 for church funds. The stall was manned and support- ed by all the members of the PCC. We were also very grateful to some members of Gedney Church who donated items for the stall. It was really good to see so many visitors to our stall whom we had not seen for many months.

Many thanks to Evelyn Penney who organised the Yard Sale – we look forward to supporting another one, whenever that is possible.

FLOWER FESTIVAL

Dates for Gedney Church Flower Festival have been pen- cilled into the diary in the hope that an event of this nature might be possible by July. The dates arranged are Thurs- day 22nd to Sunday 25th July. A final decision will be tak- en in the next few weeks depending very much on Govern- ment guidance and possible restrictions.

ANNUAL PAROCHIAL CHURCH MEETING

The Annual Parochial Church Meeting took place on Wednesday 19th May at 7.30 pm in Church. The meeting was jointly held with the other parishes in the benefice, Fleet, Holbeach Hurn and Holbeach St Marks. Each Church held its individual meet- ing and then joined together for the items on the agenda which affected everyone.

During the Gedney part of the meeting the Churchwardens and Officers were all re- elected for the coming year and the annual accounts were approved. Following the individual meetings, we all came together to hear more information about Resourcing Sustainable Church. This is a plan which seeks to re-organise the Diocese so that it is sustainable for the coming years. Currently, the Diocese is living beyond its means and cannot afford to carry on in as it is at present. The Diocese is looking to reduce the number of clergy but still maintain worshipping communities throughout Lin- colnshire. This is proving to be quite a painful process as, understandably, everyone would like to have a parish priest. Churches are being asked to consider what sort of ‘Church’ they wish to be in the future. Some may choose to have very occasional services but remain open for weddings, funerals etc. Others may wish to continue with regular services and some may indeed decide that they are no longer viable. Whatever decisions are made have to financially possible.

At present there is no priest in our group of parishes. We are extremely fortunate to have the services of Rev Julie Willingham, a retired priest, who has very kindly agreed to take our services along with David Smith, our lay reader. Our parishes have been told that no appointment will be made until this re-organisation is completed.

16 FLEET BAPTIST NEWS

If you are reading this, you have survived the lock-down, May God be praised. We have been through some torrid times over the past months, and now we have the chance to look forward to the various activities that we are able to do now.

For some that will mean trying to get back to tried and tested things, from cooking and flower arranging to walking and running and even going on holiday. What about inviting our neighbours to come to a church service?

We are now given the opportunity to embrace new things, that’s frightening. In our hymnbook is the hymn “New every morning is the love” an old hymn written by John Keble before 1866, and it remind us of the various facets of our Lord.

Some of the thoughts expressed are: v1. New every morning is the love. v2. New Mercies each returning day. v3. New treasure still God will provide. v4. The daily tasks that bring us daily nearer God.

And the very last verse (v.5.): Prepare us Lord, in your dear love for perfect rest with You above, and help us this and every day, to grow more like you as we pray.

We need to remember that we need to grow more like Jesus every day, not get Jesus to grow more like us. And the best way to grow like Jesus is to learn all we can about him in the Bible, and ask the Holy Spirit in our prayers to show us the real Jesus. Not the one we want to see, but the perfect Jesus, who God created and sent to live as one of us.

Fleet Baptist Church are meeting every Sunday at 3.00PM and we hope to be restarting Coffee Mornings when we are allowed.

God bless & keep safe Ross

17 ST LUKE'S NEWS

The Annual Parish Church Meeting was held on May 6th. After many years of service as churchwardens, both David Baker and Kay Jenkinson chose not to be re-elected. Unfortunately there was no-one willing to take on this duty. Results of election: Lay Chair David Baker Secretary Jane Thompsom Treasurer Leon Rudman Safeguarding officer Jane Thompson Electoral Roll Officer Kay Jenkinson Sue Baker, Sue Bennett, Sarah Worth, John Hardy The meeting decided that in view of falling number of worshippers and vacant parish posts not going to be filled that St Luke’s will reduce the number of services it offers. We will become a Festival Church with a minimum of seven services a year, Easter, Harvest Festival, Remembrance and the usual Christmas services. We are conscious that there is a long period between Easter and Harvest Festival. It was decided to have a Family Summer Celebration Service in June, this year to reflect and to give thanks for medical science that has helped us through this difficult time.

FAMILY SUMMER CELEBRATION SERVICE Sunday 27 June at 5 pm Followed by hot dogs!
