Among the enclaves you can visit are the beaches of Las Te- rrenas, Las Galeras, Portillo, Cosón, Playa Rincón, Playa Bonita and Cayo Levantado. 3 HOW TO GET THERE Samaná International in El Catey (AZS): located about half an hour from the province’s main tou- rist hubs. Flights can be seasonal; charter services are available from the , , - pe and America. Las Américas Airport: In the ca- pital city of , some 100 miles from Samaná. A private or express transfer service can get you to Samaná in approximately two or three hours.

WEATHER The climate is humid and tropical, with a balmy average yearly temperature of 77ºF (25ºC). The hottest season is from June to October with an average daily temperature of 86°F (30°C). The coolest season is between and March, when the average daily temperature is 82ºF (28ºC).

CURRENCY The currency at Samaná is the Domi- nican (DOP). You can exchan- ge or at the airport of arrival and also check at your hotel. Payment by credit card is also com- monly accepted at hotels and on tours.

CAYO LEVANTADO

The island of Cayo Levantado, also known as Bacardi Island, boasts one of the world’s most beautiful beaches. It is reached by boat, which takes approximately 20 minutes in the crossing from the port of Samaná. The island is a little more than half a mile long and you can enjoy snorkeling, swimming in its crystal clear waters, ka- yaking or catamaran rides, paddle surfing, strolling on the fine whi- te sand, or checking out the shops with local products and crafts.

PLAYA LAS GALERAS Las Galeras is a fishing community and an ideal beach for snor- keling. It is also one of the most popular places to start scuba di- ving. This is characterized by extensive beaches with all kinds of services. One of the most recommended beaches for diving no- vices is La Playita, with ample coral gardens visible at a depth of 35 feet where you can observe giant starfish species and southern stingrays.

PLAYA MADAMA & PLAYA FRONTÓN Ideal locations for diving experts, where you can swim amidst beautiful schools of fish and reach the immensity of the Cabo Cabrón pinnacle, a rocky tower that is home to a large number of marine species.

PLAYA RINCÓN Considered one of the ten most beautiful beaches in the world, Rincon Beach dazzles with its relatively unspoiled exuberance, the green and blue tones of its waters and a seabed decorated with impressive coral reefs and rock formations. The close to 1.8-mile stretch of white sandy beach is dotted by tall coconut palms. Next to the beach you will find small coves, surrounded by lush tropical vegetation, for swimming with privacy. Enjoy the solitary, unspoi- led ambiance of the area.

PLAYA LAS TERRENAS A beach with shallow, tranquil waters, ideal for snorkeling and enjoying sunsets under an intensely colored sky. This white sand beach stretches along the center of the village of Las Terrenas, located between Punta Popy and Las Ballenas beaches. Here you will find a lively atmosphere with fishing canoes, beachfront bars, hotels and picturesque promenades.

COSÓN & PLAYA BONITA

Located to the west of Las Terrenas, they are characterized by having strong surf and swells at certain times of the year. The calmest waters are found at the westernmost end. You will find a variety of restaurants and vendors that offer fresh fish, grilled or fried right on the beach.

1 LOS HAITISES NATIONAL PARK Los Haitises National Park is located in the provinces of Monte Pla- ta and Samaná. Haitises means high or mountainous terrain, even though this set of hills rises to just 100-120 feet. It is one of the places with the highest rainfall in the country, which creates an in- credibly lush and beautiful natural landscape. The tour of the park is done in boats through the park’s cays. You will visit the Naranjito area, where in addition to spending time with the fishermen you will be able to bathe in an underground river. 2 TAINO PARK The park was awarded the title of “Dominican Treasure” by the Dominican Tourism Competitiveness Board, as it has a social and cultural function and is one of the most sustainable theme parks in the . 3 SALTO EL LIMÓN WATERFALL Found between the towns of Las Terrenas and Samaná. A cascade where the water falls over 130 feet to a natu- ral pool. You can ride a horse or walk up to the top of the fall. The path to the water- fall will take 30/40 minutes and is simply spectacular, with a stunning variety of tropical vegetation as you go along the water that will take you to the site. 4 HUMPBACK WHALES From January to March, Samaná is the destination chosen by hum- pback whales to gather and breed in the warm waters of the bay. One of the most exciting excursions that can be made in the Domi- nican Atlantic is the one that will take you to the natural sanctuary of the humpback whales in the middle of Samaná Bay and the . In addition to being one of the most stunning coastal areas of the Dominican Republic because of its natural exuberance, the spectacle offered by the whales coming from all the northern seas to gather at this small corner of Samaná is unique. Specimens weighing up to 40 tons jump and dance in these waters, singing to mate and guarantee the continuity of their species.

5 AMBER AND LARIMAR CRAFTS Local elements like amber and larimar are extracted from the mines that dot a large part of the Dominican territory. Pottery and ceramics as well as stone carvings are other classic craft pro- ducts to be found. Mud, bone, porce- lain, wood, leather, coconut... 6 LAS TERRENAS Taking a stroll along the waterfront is like visiting a museum of small shops where you can choose from a variety of local products such as rum, coffee, cocoa, countless Dominican sweets and sam- ples of carved in wood and stone. This picturesque comercial area stands out for its ethnic design and for being an authentic example of Caribbean culture, where people talk anima- tedly and where you will be able to taste the typical gastronomy at an affordable price. 10 CABO CABRON NATIONAL PARK Considered to be the smallest park in the Dominican Republic. Freshwater springs can be found on the trails, ideal for enjoying a break on the trek.
