It was in classic form last week, mulling a $650 million bid for the struggling Newsday. On top of recent news that the city may allow Verizon to compete against Cablevision here, it’s no wonder that its shares lagged last week’s broad rally. The company is expected to post a 2 cents a share profit Thursday vs. a year-earlier loss. This week, insurance broker Marsh & McLennan is expected to do something it hasn’t done in a year—post an increase in quarterly profit. The new boss wants to widen margins and restore a reputation sullied by a bid-rigging scandal. He reportedly rebuffed a bid last week for Marsh’s Kroll security unit. Shares are up 11% in the past month. Manufacturers aren’t the only ones getting a boost from overseas growth.
