Please make sure the Challenge Cards are put in a front window so that they can be counted between 6 and 10 September. The number of cards will then be used to calculate the CO2 emissions saved by the village overall and the cost savings you have made for yourselves. These will show what you can save annually. However, you may not be aware of exactly who Peter Houseman was or how he is connected to the village. Peter Houseman was a professional footballer who spent the majority of his career at Chelsea FC. He won the FA Cup in 1970 and the European Cup Winners Cup in 1971, scoring in both finals. Whilst playing for Chelsea, Peter and his wife Sally lived at 2 Severn Gardens. When I published an early version of this article on the Calling Oakley group on Facebook, so many people came forward who remembered Peter taking them for training sessions when they were children. One recalled challenging him to the Crossbar Challenge using his weaker right foot. He effortlessly hit the crossbar first time. At the end of every training session, there was a five minute period where the young lads could try and get the ball off Peter. Very few ever succeeded! Neighbours recall them being a quiet friendly couple and during the week Peter’s Chelsea kit could be seen hanging out in the back garden after being washed.
