DONAHUE ROWING CENTER

The Donahue Rowing Center Opened in 1992 as a center for rowing activities. It is located at the north end of Lake Quin- sigamond in Shrewsbury, Mass. The center was constructed with a combination of a grant from the Offi ce of Environmental Affairs and private contributions, most notable of which was that of the Irving James Donahue, Jr. family for approximately 20 percent of the $1.1 million project cost. In 2002 the center was expanded by 4 bays thanks to a generous donation from the Donahue family and the cooperation of the Alumni Association. It is the home to a number of schools and the Quinsigamond Rowing Association. These bays in this state of the art facility allow for the housing of more than 150 boats, plus oars and other equipment.

LAKE QUINSIGAMOND

Competitive rowing teams fi rst came to Lake Quinsigamond in 1857. Finding the lake ideal for such crew meets, avid rowers estab- lished boating clubs on the lake’s shores, the fi rst being the Quinsigamond Boating Club. In 1952, the lake played host to the National Olympic rowing trials. Lake Quinsigamond is currently considered the fourth best natural body of water for rowing in the world. The lake has played host other national regattas such as the US Nationals in 1979 and the US Masters Nationals in 2005. At least six championship regattas are held on the lake each year including the Big East Cham- pionship, Patriot League Championship, Fours Regatta, New England Rowing Championship, Men’s Eastern Sprints Regatta and New England Interscholastic Rowing As- sociation Regatta.

HART RECREATION CENTER

The men’s and women’s rowing teams take advantage of the facilities at the Hart Recreation Center for indoor practice and conditioning. The Hart Center houses the Carol and Park B. Smith Wellness Center - a state of the art training facil- ity designed for use by Crusader varsity athletes and the Holy Cross community in general. The Hart Center also contains a set of crew tanks for off-season and poor weather training.

2008-2009 Women’s Varsity Eight

2008-2009 HOLY CROSS ROWING 10 MEENN’S OUUTLOOKTLOOK

Hopes are high for the 2008-2009 men’s rowing team. The team lost just three rowers to graduation, retaining seven oarsmen who spent at least part of the 2007-2008 season rowing in the varsity eight.

The Crusaders will be led by a senior class which occupied half of the positions in the top two boats last season. Rounding out the rest of the roster are a group of motivated and hungry sophomores and juniors looking to earn a seat in the varsity eight. However, rowing in the EARC means that there are no easy wins and hard work is a must for success.

Joining the team this year is an impressive group of freshmen. The 10 rowers and one coxswain represent the largest recruiting class that Crusader men’s rowing has ever seen. Their development and success will be crucial to fi ll the void left after the class of 2009 graduates. Coach Evans will round the freshman team out Senior Erick Winstead with a complement of walk on athletes this fall.

In 2008-2009, new head coach Todd Pearson will be looking to build upon the success of previous years. As the fi rst full-time coach of men’s rowing at Holy Cross, he will have more time to devote to making his team fast. To achieve that goal, he will be emphasizing fi tness and tenacity and be looking for the athletes on the team that don’t back down from a challenge. Holy Cross isn’t the biggest team in the EARC, physically speaking, but other teams have demonstrated that you don’t need to have the eight biggest athletes in the league to be successful.

Seniors Christian Bratton (l) and Adam Furlong Once again, the Crusader men will be racing an exciting and challenging schedule. The fall season will see the entire team at home on Lake Quinsigamond for the recently rekindled Snake Race on October 12. The varsity squad will send boats to the Head of the Charles on October 18-19 and then make their fi rst-ever appearance at Princeton Chase on October 26. The freshmen squad will close out the fall season on November 3, when they travel to Hanover, N.H. to race in the Green Monster. The spring of 2009 will fi nd the team racing some familiar opponents as well as some new ones. On the calendar for the spring season are Dartmouth, Columbia, MIT, Georgetown, Trinity, Gonzaga and George Washington, to name a few. The team will race at the Eastern Sprints on May 10 and is aiming for a fi fth straight invitation to the IRA National Championship, being held in 2009 on Lake Natoma, Calif. from June 4-6.

2008-2009 HOLY CROSS ROWING 12 WOOMENMEN’S OUUTLOOKTLOOK

The Holy Cross women’s rowing team returns to Lake Quinsigamond ready to build upon a string of successes from the previous year and its great experience at the Hen- ley Women’s Regatta. This year’s nine seniors plan to continue to drive the program to new levels of competition. This year will also see the return of a full lightweight squad to the program and welcomes six new freshmen to the squad.

The Crusaders will spend the fall working on technique on the water and building strength off of the water. Holy Cross will log many miles on Lake Quinsigamond and also invest signifi cant time on strength and conditioning. Coaches Diggins, Piotti and Putnam will be focused on technique, effi ciency and boat speed on the water. Strength & conditioning coach Jeff Oliver will focus on building the core strength and fl exibil- ity needed to excel.

The fall racing season begins with Quinsigamond Snake Regatta. The “Snake” gives the team an opportunity to race at home and gear up for the larger races that follow. The team will be racing at the Head of the Charles in three separate events this year: the women’s club eight, the women’s lightweight eight and the women’s championship eight, competing Senior Johanna Cubelli against the best collegiate and club programs from around the world. The varsity squad concludes the fall season at the Princeton Chase. This is the fi rst year Holy Cross will be participating in this “invitation only” event which includes the best collegiate rowing programs on the east coast.

After a winter training trip, winter training, and a spring training trip to Cocoa Beach, Senior Katie Donnelly Fla., the team returns to Lake Quinsigamond in March. The spring season looks to be very different from past years as Holy Cross continued effort to strengthen the quality of the schedule continues. Continuing to race some of the college’s historic New England rivals -- including Trinity, Wiliams & Tufts -- the Crusaderse will now be racing other strong Division I programs including Boston College, MIT, Radcliffe Light- weights, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire. The team will also travel to the George Washington Invitational and the Patriot League Championships.

This year the team will not compete at the New England Rowing Championships, but instead will compete at the ECAC Northeast Regional Women’s Rowing Championships at which the best of the NCAA Division I programs compete. The season fi nishes at the ECAC National Invitational Rowing Championships, where Senior Lis Flaherty the team looks to improve on its second place overall fi nish in 2008.
