Important Dates and Enrolment Information for Parents

We welcome your interest in enrolling your child at Kerikeri High School.

Kerikeri High School has an Enrolment Scheme that meets the legislative requirements to ensure that overcrowding, or the likelihood of overcrowding, is avoided at Kerikeri High School. The Enrolment Scheme protects automatic entry for those living within the Home Zone and enables some Out-of-Zone access.

In-Zone Application (White Form) – Closing Date Monday 13th September 2021 Your child has an absolute right to attend Kerikeri High School if you reside permanently in the Kerikeri High School home zone. To confirm automatic entry you are required to complete an In-Zone Application with documentation to prove your residential address. Please note that “reside permanently” means that the student lives permanently with their parent/s or legal guardian/s within the Kerikeri High School home zone.

Please ensure the completed in-zone application is returned to Kerikeri High School Reception as soon as possible or by Monday 13th September 2021 to enable timetable planning to begin for 2022 and help determine the number of out of zone places we can offer.

Out-Of-Zone Application (Blue Form) – Closing Date Monday 20th September 2021 If you live out of the Kerikeri High School home zone, as per the zone map, you must complete a 2022 Out-of-Zone Application and ensure that it is received at Kerikeri High School Reception by Monday 20th September 2021 for consideration.

The exact number of places available for Out-of-Zone students will depend on the number of applications received from students who live within Kerikeri High School’s home zone. If there are more applicants than places at any Year level the allocation of any available place will be by ballot within the priorities outlined below. The ballot will be held on Thursday 23rd September 2021. You will be notified of the result of your Out-of-Zone application by email by Monday 27th September 2021. We ask that you please notify us in writing as soon as possible, if you do not want to accept this Out-of-Zone place.

School Bus Information The main school bus service in the Kerikeri school’s area is provided by the Ministry of Education (MOE), to assist eligible students to travel from their home to school. For some years funding provided has been managed by the Kerikeri Schools Transport Network (KSTN) who contract Clarks Coachlines to provide the service. Clarks Coachlines provide us with an extremely efficient service, with a modern well maintained and impeccably presented fleet of buses.

Eligibility for School Transport Assistance Students must meet all three eligibility criteria to get School transport assistance.

• They must be attending their closest school. This means they must reside within the School’s Transport Entitlement Zone (TEZ). Each school is surrounded by a transport entitlement zone (TEZ) which is defined by the mid-point between itself and the next similar school. Note that the TEZ is not necessarily the same as the School’s enrolment zone, and in fact is different for Kerikeri High School in both the Haruru Falls and Takou areas. • They must live more than a certain distance from the school. Year 7 and 8 students must live more than 3.2km and Year 9-13 more than 4.8km by the shortest road or pedestrian route. (Measured from the legal property access driveway). • There must be no suitable public transport options.

Eligible Students Living Within the Transport Entitlement Zone School transport assistance provided to eligible students is usually a place on a school bus. However the MOE reserve the right to provide a School Transport Conveyance Allowance in lieu of a bus if it is uneconomic to operate a bus for a few students. This is currently the case in the Purerua peninsula area. Note that students are expected to walk up to 2.4km to their bus stop, so routes usually do not extend to the TEZ boundaries.

Conveyance Allowance provided in exceptional cases In exceptional cases the student may receive a grant (Conveyance Allowance) in lieu of a place on a bus. This may be for some medical or other unusual situation, or if an eligible student lives more than 2.4km from the nearest bus stop. Application forms for a conveyance allowance are available from Reception and need to be returned to the school. After verification they are forwarded to the MOE who determine whether they are accepted. Allowances are paid to caregivers each term in arrears. Caregivers should apply for the transport allowance in Term One to ensure the full annual allowance is received. Once approved the allowance remains active until the student leaves school or changes their address. Even if remaining eligible, a new application must be made for a new address.

Bus Loading Our aim to have all students seated is becoming increasingly difficult. Some routes do require some students to stand. However, no bus has been overloaded, and all drivers have strict instruction to not ever exceed the legal loadings. Most buses are licenced to carry around 20 standing student passengers.

Bus Bay Loading the large number of students efficiently and safely onto buses at the end of the day is a challenge. The twenty buses will not all fit in the bus bay so they arrive at set staggered times. If even a single car is parked in the bus bay the process is considerably slower, leaving buses on Hone Heke Road unable to enter the bay and blocking all road traffic. Please do not park in the bay between the times displayed on the signs.

Passenger Fares Where space is available, the KSTN allows non-eligible student passengers who must pay a fare. Schools have details of the fares which are set by the contractor. This service is very limited and not guaranteed, as the eligible user numbers vary day-by-day, and is not available if these additional students significantly increase the number of standing passengers. Unfortunately, because of loadings no space is available on any bus serving Waipapa so students are not able to use the buses to travel to sports practices at Waipapa.

Queries All queries regarding the bus services need to be made to the student’s school. The contractors are not able to make decisions about routes, or casual passengers.

Private Buses In addition to the KSTN bus service, there are Clarks Coachline buses serving the Paihia, Opua, Kaikohe and Matauri Bay areas, and Stewarts serving . All these are fare-paying services.

Student ID Cards

All students will receive an ID Card annually. These will be used by Bus Drivers to identify students eligible to take the bus. They can also be used at the library and to purchase textbooks. We recommend students take a photo of this ID Card once received. Students who lose their card will be charged $1 for a replacement.

Student Payments

On enrolment, a family School Account will be created, which will include a Family Key. Please use this Family Key as a reference for any payment you make online to ensure this is assigned to the correct family. Our School bank account for payment is 12-3091-0120756-00.

Statement of Contributions will be sent on a regular basis. On these statements will be a link to access your payment portal. This will allow you to check your account at any stage and pay any charges online quickly and easily.

If your child participates in optional events or trips during the year, further information including a permission slip will be provided and the cost will be added to your account. It is the expectation of the School that any optional trips and events are paid prior to the event happening. Where this proves difficult to pay, we welcome automatic payments to spread the cost over the year. This can be arranged through your bank. The School has processes in place to ensure all students can access the curriculum and if Parents and caregivers are encountering financial difficulties please contact your Deputy Principal.

Kerikeri High School Representative Hoodie Criteria

Kerikeri High School Representative Hoodies are available for students who meet the schools approved criteria, as described below. These hoodies are not part of the official school uniform, as they are subject to fading if worn regularly, and so are not suitable as a permanent uniform item. However, students are currently permitted to wear their approved Kerikeri High School hoodies at school.

The intention of the hoodies is to provide students, who represent the school and meet the hoodie criteria, with a comfortable and appropriate casual garment that they can wear to mid-week and weekend school sports fixtures and qualifying Four Cornerstone events.

The school reserves the right to review and amend the criteria for Representative Hoodies as needed.

To qualify for a Representative Kerikeri High School Hoodie, the student will:

• be in a selected team which represents the school on a regular basis – this can include individual sports, e.g. Athletics, Tennis, etc… if the student represents the Kerikeri High School at Northland Secondary Schools Association or National events.

• or be involved in a Four Cornerstone activity representing the school on a regular basis, in a selected group or individual activity. This can include: Debating, Kapa Haka, Jazz Band, Rock Quest, Student Librarian, Student Council, etc.

All Representative Hoodies must have at least one qualifying Four Cornerstone activity listed under the school logo. Subsequent qualifying activities may be added to the Representative Hoodie over time, with a formal letter from the school approving the addition(s). New Representative Hoodies may have qualifying Four Cornerstone activities added retrospectively with formal written approval from the school.

The Representative Hoodies cost $110.00 and will have the student’s initials heat pressed on to the back right of the hoodie. Alternatively, it can be embroidered and the hoodie will cost $115.00. Representative Hoodies will not be distributed to students without the relevant details included on them.

Hoodies are purchased on the understanding they are unique to the purchasing student and are not transferable to siblings, friends etc.

Hoodies must be ordered through the Kerikeri High School Sports Office. Please note some delay may occur due to the required personalisation.

Kerikeri High School Bring Your Own Technology Guidance for Parents and Caregivers 2022

Kerikeri High School operates a state-of-the-art School-wide Wi-Fi Network, with a secure, filtered ultra-fast broadband connection. Bring Your Own Device is not compulsory; however students are able to bring their own device to School to support their learning as appropriate. We believe that devices can be a powerful tool in teaching and learning, however are only one of a range of tools that may be used in the classroom. Students are able to access the curriculum whether they have their own device or not. We are excited to be taking steps towards realising the benefits that technology can offer our students, however we are taking a considered approach to this to ensure the achievement and safety of students continues to be a priority.

All students at Kerikeri High School have been provisioned with an Office 365 Account. This provides students with a Kerikeri High School email address, access to Microsoft Office Online, including cloud storage and access to apps such as Word, PowerPoint and Excel online, as well as the ability to install Microsoft Office on up to 5 devices, including Windows PCs’, MacBooks, iPads and Android devices for free.

We recognise that students and their families may already own, or want to have a choice in the type of device that is brought to school (for example an iPad or a laptop), and so the School will not be stipulating that students are required to have a particular device as some schools have. This will allow for a range of devices and prices. Students may wish to use more than one device at school for different purposes, however this is not necessary.

In addition to computer labs throughout the School, we are working to provide as many Chromebooks for student use as shared devices as possible, however students having a personal device to use has many advantages for continuity of work, personal storage as well as personal preference for device type.

Devices will fall into one of two categories:

1. A device that meets the minimum specification to connect to the network. These may include smartphones tablets. The minimum specifications are:

• Battery A minimum of 4 hours of battery life

• Browser Devices must have a modern internet browser such as Chrome, Internet Explorer 10 or above, Safari or Firefox

• Office 365 Must be able to run Microsoft Office either online, via downloaded apps (Android or IOS) or by installing the full version of Office

2. A Student’s Principal Learning Device. This will be the main device that a student uses in class and may be their only device. The minimum specification for these devices includes the requirements above but has additional requirements to ensure that it is useful and easy to use.

• Screen Size 8.0 inches for iPads (or similar) 11 inches minimum for Netbooks and Chromebooks

• Input Device Either permanent or removable external keyboards make devices more accessible for students. Other options may include handwriting recognition via a stylus

The School recommends that Students use either a Windows-based device, or a Chromebook for their Principal Learning device.

Please treat these recommendations as a minimum specification – some, particularly specialist senior subjects, may have recommendations for device specifications that exceed these if Students are considering using their own devices. Examples may include Photography and Art Design.

Looking ahead, if your student is considering bringing a digital device to School, below are some points you should consider:

• It is our advice that devices brought to school should be stored and transported in a protective bag or sleeve to minimise potential damage.

• All devices are required to have a password, lock pattern or some other sort of security protections to prevent unauthorised access.

• Devices should be brought to School fully charged – there will not be charging facilities for students’ devices.

• The security of devices brought to School will be the responsibility of the student. While reasonable efforts will be made by the School to ensure the safety and security of devices brought to school, no liability for the loss or damage of a device will be held by the School. Insurance of devices is the responsibility of families. Devices and their accessories should be clearly labelled, and serial numbers recorded in a safe place in case of loss.

• All internet use is filtered and monitored by our state-of-the-art internet Firewall to ensure that students are not able to access inappropriate content on their devices via the School Network. Students are required to install a Kerikeri High School Security Certificate on their device to be able to access our Wi-Fi network,

As technology moves and develops, so will these device specifications and recommendations. We look forward to working with our School community to make this successful and accessible for all students and their families.

It is easy to contact each Year Level Dean as the Deans have offices in the Student Centre. The Student Centre also administers the attendance of students, including students who are late or out of class for some reason.

SECTION A INTRODUCTION

The measures to ensure the cybersafety of Kerikeri High School students outlined in this document are based on Kerikeri High School’s values. The school’s computer network, Internet access facilities, computers and other school ICT equipment/devices bring great benefits to the teaching and learning programmes at Kerikeri High School and to the effective operation of the school. Our school has rigorous cybersafety practices in place, which include cybersafety acceptable use policies for all school staff and students. The overall goal of this policy is to create and maintain a cybersafety culture which is in keeping with the values of the school, and legislative and professional obligations. This policy includes information about students’ obligations, responsibilities, and the nature of possible consequences associated with cybersafety breaches which undermine the safety of the school environment. All new students are issued with the current Cybersafety Acceptable Use Policy for Students and once signed consent has been given to the school, students are be able to use the school’s ICT equipment/devices. The school’s computer network, Internet access facilities, computers and other school ICT equipment/devices are only for educational purposes appropriate to the school environment. This applies whether the ICT equipment is owned or leased either partially or wholly by the school, and used on or off the school campus.

SECTION B CYBERSAFETY ACCEPTABLE USE POLICY FOR STUDENTS

As responsible users of ICT, students are expected to keep themselves and others cybersafe as follows:

Do Schoolwork Only Students can only use the school’s ICT equipment for schoolwork and must not: • Access, or attempt to access, inappropriate, age restricted, or objectionable material • Download, save or distribute such material by copying, storing, printing or showing it to other people • Make any attempt to get around or bypass security, monitoring and filtering that is in place at school. If students accidentally access inappropriate material, they should: • Not show others, • Immediately turn off the screen or close the window and • Report the incident to a Teacher straight away.

The school monitors traffic and material sent, received or stored using the school’s computer network. The school uses filtering systems to restrict access to Internet content and services. The school audits its computer network, Internet access facilities, computers and other school ICT equipment/devices and may commission an independent forensic audit if required. Auditing of the above items may include any stored content, and all aspects of their use, including email.

Keep Your Username and Password to Yourself Students will be issued with a unique network username and given the opportunity to set their own password. Students must only log on to the network with their own username and password and must log off when finished. Students must not share their password with anyone and must not let anyone else use a computer that they have logged on to. Students will be held responsible for anything done using their username and password.

Private Equipment Is Included These policies also apply to any privately owned ICT equipment or devices such as mobile phones, USB flash drives, digital cameras or personal music players that students bring to school or to a school-related activity. Any images or material on such equipment or devices must be appropriate to the school environment. Students are not allowed to bring privately owned computers to school unless written permission has been given by the ICT Manager or Cybersafety Manager.

No Bullying, Harassment or Breaches of Privacy Students will avoid any involvement with any material or activities that could put at risk the safety, security or privacy of any member of the school community. This applies both at school and off campus. Students must not at any time use ICT to upset, offend, harass, threaten or in any way harm anyone connected to the school or the school itself. Students must not give out any personal information about any other person without that person’s permission. Personal information includes names, addresses, email addresses, phone numbers, and photos.

Take Care of the School’s Equipment Students must treat all ICT equipment and devices with care and respect. This includes: • Not intentionally disrupting the smooth running of any of the school’s ICT systems • Not attempting to hack or gain unauthorised access to any system • Following the school’s cybersafety policies and procedures, and not joining in if other students choose to be irresponsible with ICT • Reporting any breakages or damage to a staff member immediately.

Consequences for Breaches Breaches of the cybersafety policies and procedures, will result in disciplinary action which may include informing parents. Students’ families may be charged for physical or electronic damage, loss or theft.

When downloading files such as music and video clips, students must comply with the Copyright Act 1994. Anyone who infringes copyright may be personally liable under this law.
