Page 2 Notley High School Newsletter – Issue 314 - 15 July 2011 Disco Inferno As the curtain came down on the final night of Disco Inferno the elation was obvious. The months of hard work, the tears and laughter, the costume sourcing, the endless rehearsal and the nights of stress suddenly all seemed very worth it. It is fair to say that Notley High School and Braintree Sixth Form had never seen anything like the all singing, all dancing spectacle that the awesome cast, musicians and crew presented to them. The audience followed us on a rollercoaster ride - laughing, applauding, being visibly moved when Harry Petchey sang ‘Sorry seems to be the hardest word’ and enthusiastically singing along to the well loved 70s hits. The passion that cast felt for the show was infectious and the buzz around school has been overwhelming. Plans are already afoot for next year’s show. It will be a challenge yet we are confident the next one will be even bigger and even better so get involved. See Mrs Hall in the Drama department for more information on being involved in upcoming productions.

Notley High School Newsletter – Issue 314 - 15 July 2011 Page 3 Wind Band at George Yard

On Wednesday 15 June the Wind Band performed in George Yard for 2 hours. A wide range of music was performed including music from “Pirates of the Caribbean”; “America” from West Side Story; “Brown Eyed Girl” and “Funky Town”. The Wind Band played very well and had a large audience throughout the morning. This was great publicity for the school and we had many positive comments following our performance. The Friends of Notley High school were also there and selling raffle tickets with help from some Year 9 students. I would particularly like to thank the Wind Band for all their hard work and hours of rehearsals in preparation for this event. Mrs Hanna

The hospice gets very little money from the Govern- ment and depends almost entirely on the generosity of the families who have a child as a patient, local businesses, schools and individuals. They regularly hold inspiring fundraising events, including the Ladies’ Driving Challenges in which many female staff took part.

A big thank you goes to every Notley High School student and member of staff who did donate £1 (or more) on the day. Last year we raised well over £900 just through the non-wearing of uniform – this year we raised £835. Fortunately, Student Voice members raised more funds through taking part in the Hospice’s “Brew, Bake and Celebrate” event, bringing in £135 themselves – a fantastic effort and achievement. Due to Student Voice, our final total for the day came to £970. Thank you to Jan Bird and her team for making this possible. A presentation was made to the Hospice’s Set in beautiful meadowland in Community Fundraiser, Leanne Overett, who came in to school on Tuesday 28 June Thundersley, just outside of Rayleigh in to receive our cheque. Page 12 Notley High School Newsletter – Issue 314 - 15 July 2011 Art Exhibition at the Dome Gallery

The first exhibition of artwork produced by the students of the Notley High School and Braintree Sixth Form at the Dome gallery in Braintree Library opened with a Private View on the evening of Tuesday 21 June. Students, parents and governors enjoyed looking at the wide variety of work on display including paintings and three dimensional pieces. Also on show were fine art prints developed by the students at the Curwen Print Study Centre in Cambridge. Sketchbooks gave an insight as to how students progress from initial to production of the final piece. Members of this first cohort of art students from the Notley High School and Braintree Sixth Form have successfully applied to study Art at higher education colleges and intend to pursue a career in the creative industries. County Councillor Jeremy Lucas, Essex County Council’s Cabinet Member with responsibility for Libraries, said “We are delighted to be able to exhibit work from students of Notley High School and Braintree Sixth Form at Braintree Library, and are confident that their work will provide a great deal of pleasure to local art lovers.” Ms Monro

Our students have excelled themselves in many different aspects of school and extra-curricular life and we are all very proud of their successes. With the end of term approaching, I would like to clarify our plans for the final day of term. School will close at 1.15 pm on Friday 22 July. We have arranged for break time to be extended so that students, including those entitled to free school meals, who want to get an early lunch are able to do so (break will now run from 10.45 to 11.25). School buses will run as normal, but at the earlier time. Years 7, 10 and 12 will all return to school for the autumn term on Tuesday 6 September. All other year groups should return to school on Wednesday 7 September. The school holidays tend to be a time when new items of uniform and equipment are purchased and I would also like to take this opportunity to clarify our expectations at Notley. You will find our uniform guidelines attached to this letter. These expectations are also communicated on the school’s website and in the Parent and Carer Handbook. Please take the time to read the attached guidelines, especially if you are planning to purchase any new items of uniform for your son/daughter. The school reserves the right to make the final decision regarding whether an item of uniform meets the school’s guidelines. If you are at all unsure, we would encourage you to contact us for clarification. Please also be sure to check the guidelines before allowing your son/daughter to have body piercings. I have also attached an equipment list that outlines the items that we expect students to bring to school. Thank you for your support in these matters. The wearing of full school uniform and the responsibility of coming to school fully equipped are both integral parts of the school ethos which promotes positive attitudes, high standards and a sense of personal pride. Finally, I would like to wish the best of luck to all students who have undertaken public examinations this year. GCSE results will be released on Thursday 25 August and we are hoping for another set of excellent results. We also look forward to our first set of A level results for Braintree Sixth Form students on Thursday 18 August. Yours faithfully

Page 16 Notley High School Newsletter – Issue 314 - 15 July 2011 On Top of the World Braintree Sixth Form Students Achieve World Class Exam Results Students and staff at Braintree Sixth Form are celebrating the success of their first International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB) results. A 90% pass rate was achieved by the students, significantly exceeding the worldwide average of 78%. World class performances from 17 year olds Rebecca Hedger and James Pickering ensured that they were in the top 2% of students internationally as they attained a remarkable 39 points out of 45 in the International Baccalaureate Diploma. Only 96 students in the world achieved 45 points last year. The IB Diploma is an internationally recognised qualification for students aged 16 to 19 which involves them in the study of 6 subject areas including English, Maths, a Language, Humanities and Science. For further information see the Braintree Sixth Form website www.braintreesixthform.com IB Coordinator at Braintree Sixth Form, Bradley Snell, was delighted with the results. “This is a fantastic achievement by our IB students,” he commented. “It’s a testimony to the hard work and pioneering spirit of students and staff who have ensured that Braintree Sixth Form is excelling internationally less than two years after opening its doors.” Headteacher, Mr Thompson, studied the International Baccalaureate himself in Canada. He added: “It is very satisfying to see the students of Braintree succeeding in the IB Diploma and a remarkable achievement that in sixteen subject areas, results are above the world average.” If you would like to find out more about the IB Diploma at Braintree Sixth Form, please contact Kim.Betts@ braintreesixthform.com Braintree Sixth Form’s Yr 13 Enjoy Leavers’ Ball At Stock Brook Country Club

As they prepare to embark on their journeys after their time at Braintree Sixth Form, Yr 13 students enjoyed a wonderful evening at the Leavers’ Ball on Monday, 27 June. Held at Stock Brook Country Club, students celebrated their achievements and friendships, and said farewell to staff and friends who had been with them every step along the way. A delicious three-course meal was served, followed by speeches from Co-Director Mrs Steadman and Evie Simpson, who helped organise the ball. A special thank you went to Mrs Goodman, who oversaw the organisation of the evening and made sure everything ran smoothly. ‘The first Braintree Sixth Form Leavers’ Ball was a fantastic evening and highlighted both the organisational skills and enthusiasm of this first group of students,” Mrs Steadman added. “A fitting end to a very successful two years for the first ‘leavers’ from Braintree Sixth Form - we are very proud of them all and wish them well in their future endeavours.” After the speeches, students headed straight for the dance floor where the majority remained until the end of the night. A great evening was had by all who attended. Thank you to Chris Rowe for his photography work on the evening. A number of Notley students in Year 10 and Year 11 have been following vocational courses one-day per week in either Beauty Therapy, Construction or Motor Vehicle Maintenance which on completion leads to Level 1 qualifications in the vocational area they have followed. We were delighted that Carly Brinkley (11B) was awarded the ‘best student’ award from the Year 11 cohort of students that have studied Beauty Therapy at the Braintree campus. Many congratulations to Carly, and to all of our other students that have followed their vocational courses successfully this year. Paella On 28 June all of SLC watched Mr Fernandez cook paella. We thought this was good because we had been learning about Spanish food, towns, cities, Balearic Islands, Canary Islands and dances. The ingredients that we used were peas, chicken, pepper, rice, tomatoes, green beans, water, saffron, prawns and lemon. We could all have a taste of it to see if it was nice. Most of us thought it was tasty but some of us didn’t.
