St,'mon Patriok, JJ.JJ., was translated from the see of Chichester to this of Ely, July 2nd, 1691. He was born at Gainsborough; admitted a student of Queen's college, Cambridge, where he became a fellow; and was- afterwards prebend of 1.N estminster, and dean of . He died at Ely, May 31st, 1707, in the 81st year of his age, and was buried in the presbytery of the cathedral, where a handsome monument was soon erected to his memory. His successor was John Moore, JJ.IJ., , who was translated to Ely·on the 31st of July, 1707. He.died at Ely-house, July 31st, 1714, and was interred near his pre­ dec~sor, Dr. Patrick. After his death, his library was purchased by king George I. for 6000 guineas, and presented to the . TVilltt'am Fleetwooil, IJ.IJ., bishop of St. .Asaph, and one of the most celebrated preachers of his time, was the next , whither he was translated on the 18th of December, 1714. He died on the 4th of August, 1724, in the 67th year of his age, and lies burted in the presbytery of the cathedral. His successor was Thomas Gree.ne, n. JJ., who was translated from the see of Norwich to this of Ely, on Septem­ ber 24th, 1723. Having occupied the prelatical throne for 14! years, he died at Ely-house, London, May 18th, 1738, in the 80th year of his age, and was buried on the south side of the cathedral church, where an elegant monument was soon after erected to his memory. , JJ.IJ., another bishop of Norwich was the next bishop of Ely. He was translated here on the death of Dr. Greene, and having filled the see for 9! years he died also at Ely-house, on the 26th January, 1784, ~nd was interred in the cathedral on the north side of the p:resby­ tery, near the east end. The next bishop was Sir , bart.: • he was vice-chancellor of the university of Cambridge for three successive years, and after having the sees of Bristol and Norwich for some time, he was translated to Ely on the ll th March, 174 7-8. He died at Ely­ house, February 14th, 1754, and was buried in the chapel of Gonville and Caius college, in Cambridge, where a monument was erected to his memory. The 50th bishop of Ely was Mattkias Mawson, JJ.lJ., bishop succes­ sively of Llandaff and Chichester, who was translated to Ely on the 15th March, 1754. Dr. l\Iawson was very active in promoting the
