Midleton College Sports Complex Building a better future for our children

College has established a proud in sporting participation and achievement in a wide range of team and individual activities. The reputation of current and former students for active involvement and high standards of ability is recognised throughout Munster and beyond. Now is the time for us to ensure that current and future generations of students have the opportunity to develop their personal fitness and sporting ability supported by a facility worthy of the standards we wish to achieve. Your support for this venture can assist us to turn our vision into a reality and build a better future for our children.” Mr. Simon Thompson Principal Our Ethos Is to provide an environment in which the natural and God given talents of our pupils will be nurtured and supported so that they may grow to be active members of their community.

Our Goal Is that pupils will leave the College equipped with the academic, personal and moral qualities necessary to enable them to take their place within and ready to make a contribution to the wider community.

Our Vision Challenging ourselves to achieve more: that is a constant at Midleton College. In all we do, we seek to do it at the very highest standard. Underpinning the successful education of our pupils is the provision of resources. In order to ensure that this is feasible, there is a responsibility to ensure that appropriate resources are provided for our staff and students. For generations over the course of 300 years, those involved in the College have been the beneficiaries of the vision and generosity of others. We seek to ensure that we now put in place the resources to serve this and future generations in relation to personal and communal health, fitness, team and individual sporting participation and the pursuit of excellence.

Campus development plan

This project fits as a major component of the overall campus development plan alongside experienced professionals in the field. There has been considerable investment made in upgrading existing facilities over a number of years. The recent addition of classrooms has supported the expansion of 1st Form student intake in line with the expanding demand for places. The new academic block, currently under construction, will provide the first phase of the major development of a new academic teaching and administrative centre on the campus. This block will be complimented by the Sports Complex both in terms of the quality of resource provided by the College and the creation of a new cloistered setting in the central area of the campus. Successful delivery of both these components of the campus development plan will ensure the College is best placed to continue to provide the quality of education for which it has established a deserved reputation.

We offer 21 subjects for Leaving Certificate: Irish, English, Maths, French and/or Spanish and/or German, History, , Art, Music, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Agricultural Science, Applied Maths, Accountancy, Business Studies, Economics, Home Economics, Classical Studies, .

Over the past decade our State Exam results have been consistently twice the national average.

We offer a 6 year cycle of second level education. We have a mandatory Transition Year. We teach Junior Cycle subjects on a mixed-ability basis. We offer four modern languages (French, Spanish, German, Chinese) in addition to Irish and English.

We offer a daily programme of structured extra-curricular activities. Pupils attend the College as Day pupils, Day/Boarders or Boarders.

New Education Block

Our goal is to Invest in providing a level of resource that will support continued expansion and delivery appropriate for the 21st Century. The evidence is clear: when our staff and pupils are provided with the appropriate resources, the outcomes exceed expectations. Personal physical fitness for young people has never been of greater importance. Recent studies identify the rise of obesity levels among young people in . This hall will provide a key resource in promoting fitness and personal health for College students and the local / regional community.

Benefits to the community We are proud of our record of making the College resources available to the community. Our rugby pitches, hockey pitch, pitch and swimming pool are made available to other local, regional and national sporting organisations where possible by arrangement. Over the past 2 years 26 clubs, societies and organisations have used the astroturf hockey pitch. We will seek to ensure that the Sports Complex is available in like manner as a resource for the community when not in use by the College.

What the students say “Midleton lacks a modern indoor facility, and the whole community would benefit from a new sports hall.” Anthony O’Shea

Facilities in the New Sports Complex

The Sports Complex will be 700sq metres and will provide facilities appropriate to the needs of a co-educational boarding school and those of any age within the local and wider community. Flexible use changing facilities will be augmented by internal and external entrance points.

The main hall will accommodate: • 4 badminton courts, basketball, indoor soccer, hockey, rugby. • Changing rooms, first aid room, visitors toilets, gymnastics, reception. • Internal viewing balcony gives way into a fitted gym and open training area for aerobics/pilates etc. Together we can turn our vision into a reality

The hall will also significantly enhance the range of activities that can occur on the campus. The hall could be used for College Prize-giving ceremonies, theatre / music productions and conference activities. Indeed the combination of event, dining and accommodation facilities available on campus will raise the profile of the town of Midleton as a destination for major organisational gatherings of young and old.

Together we can turn our vision into a reality
