I started compiling this magazine as the snowdrops and crocuses were coming out but hardly any daffodils. Now, as I write the editorial, snow has returned. Last year there were reports of sunburn at March’s Farmers’ Market, this year there was the risk of frost-bite. However, whatever the weather throws at us, local people respond—Steve, a Norton farmer, brought his snowplough to help us clear Nether Edge and Glen roads to help Sunday’s shoppers—something which wasn’t apparent in the city centre.. I’ve included Joanna’s report from our February AGM, which looks back on the past year and mentions some of NENG’s new initiatives including our March “Party in the Park” at Common Ground which Mandy will be reporting on next month. I hope you will continue to support us. Chris Venables.

Hi Christine To introduce myself, I am Mark Cowen, General Manager of Graves Tennis and Leisure and Heeley swimming pool. I recently received a copy of the March edition of Edge, which contains information about Heeley. The reason for my email is to thank our customers for their contributions during the consultation process and to update them on our decisions.

Weekend lane swimming to remain at Heeley on Saturday & Sunday from 7.00am –8.30am A consultation process into the swimming timetables at the venue is currently underway and initial proposals were to offer lane swimming sessions on weekdays only. However, during the consultation process the venue has been evaluating customer feedback, which has shown that a high number of people wanted to see weekend availability remain. As a result Heeley Swimming Pool will continue to provide lane swimming on both Saturdays and Sundays, but only between the new times of 7am and 8:30am, when the changes come into force towards the end of April. To make the sessions viable we need to grow the numbers attending the sessions, therefore we will be making every effort through our marketing and business links to promote the sessions to get to a point where they are sustainable. A 6 month review will be undertaken to gauge the success of the sessions. In making these alterations we have considered the current and potential usage levels and the need to provide a balance programme. This new programme will not only accommodate the 100+ children who are on the waiting list for swimming lessons but will provide further swimming lesson opportunity. We hope that through these added swimming lessons we can provide the much needed life skill to the younger members of the City whilst also helping the budgetary position. The re-introduction of early morning swimming, at slightly early times, will also cater for the average number of users at Heeley. For more information about Heeley Swimming Pool, visit www.heeleypool.co.uk.

Bill Atherton comments on bus 22 - following Trish’s letter in March’s EDGE Hi Chris, Further to the ongoing saga of the very poor service that is the 22 bus - I work 3 days a week visiting people on the Manor. On at least 3 days last month, February, at or around 11:00 there were 3 x 22 busses coming down Castlebeck Avenue. That it happens regularly at that time leaves me suspecting factors other than "heavy traffic" - which is the claim always made by the drivers.

Response from Annette Sheldon, External Relations Public Consultation Assistant, Tel: 0114 2211448 e-mail: [email protected]

Dear Chris I am pleased to advise you that First are making some changes wef 28 April to service 22, essentially to improve service punctuality across the afternoon peak from around 15:00 when the frequency will reduce from 10 to 12 minutes. Although, this may not look particularly attractive, the general consensus is that a reliable 12 minute service is much better than an erratic 10 minute service. At present there are various gaps of 8, 10, 12 or 15 minute intervals at evening peak. By offering a regular 12 minute frequency - with in some cases extended running or recovery time - it is hope that loadings will be spread more evenly and reliability enhanced. I agree this won’t have any effect on the morning and we will need to take this up with First. First have made no indication that they wish to alter the links across the City and since the route runs on a commercial basis we cannot force the operator to change this, although it is something I will be asking. We welcome all comments concerning bus services and if you have any further information or ideas please contact us, as this will allow us to improve services further.

Trees planted in memory of Abbeydale Grange School will also help the environment. About twenty years ago, a group of pupils from Abbeydale Grange went into Spring Wood above the school and gathered tree seeds. They sowed and nurtured them, then planted the young trees to make a small patch of woodland on the corner of Hastings Road and Abbeydale Road, where once there was a wartime meat-store. Since the school was closed and demolished this wood is one of the few tangible reminders that it was there. On 15/16th March, Carter Knowle & Millhouses community group along with people from the local community fulfilled a long-held ambition to extend the wood along the front of the site by Abbeydale Road. With the support and permission of Council officers, they planted over four hundred baby trees which had been given to them by the Woodland Trust, as part of the Jubilee Forest project sponsored by Sainsbury’s, IKEA and Biffa. Bluecoats aka SHU art school site Local resident Lynda Mitchell reports: On 16th March, Bellway developers held an open meeting at the Kenwood Hotel regarding the redevelopment of the former Sheffield Polytechnic/ Sheffield Hallam University site on Psalter Lane. The conversion of the former Bluecoats' school (a grade II listed building) is progressing well. Although it will be a couple of years before the full site is completed, 2 & 3 bedroom apartments in the Old Schoolhouse are now available to reserve and should be ready for occupation by July this year. The new houses in the lower part of the site should be built by the end of the year.

Anyone interested in Nether Edge Neighbourhood Group, the work it does, how to get involved and what is on offer in our area can visit www.netheredge.org.uk/ .

If you haven’t visited for a while, you will see that our website got a facelift last autumn. Sheffield website developer Michael Dearman of Icarus Tree created the new site and now hosts it for us, providing valuable technical support.

However, it needs to be kept up to date and developed to suit its users. That is how I (possibly foolishly !) offered to help out. Recently, I have been updating our ‘What’s on’ section and making sure that NENG committee and market information is available. Now that I’m a bit more familiar with the site and our archives, I am starting to look at issues like how easy it is to use and what sort of information people hope to find on it.

Over the next couple of months, I will be asking visitors to the site to complete a short survey so that we can prioritise what needs doing and hopefully make the site a useful port of call for everyone. Anyone with ideas about the site or information that they think we should feature can email me a message titled ‘NENG website’ at [email protected].

Heeley City Farm is hosting a Repair Café event - to launch the Repair Sheffield initiative on Saturday 13th April from 10am – 4pm. Several organisations, including Transition Sheffield, Access Space and ReCycle Bikes, are getting together to encourage Sheffielders to repair household items instead of throwing them away and people are invited to bring along things to ‘fix’ on the day. There is no doubt that we’ve become a throwaway society, driven by the constant egging on from advertisers to buy more, newer, better products. This has a massive impact – creating ever more landfill and using up resources exponentially. All the valuable skills and knowledge associated with repairing items are slowly dying out too as they aren’t considered useful to know anymore. Only a few generations ago this would have been unthinkable. Shoes, toasters, lamps, bikes, clothes, toys and furniture can often be easily and very cheaply repaired but people don’t know how and just throw them away and buy new ones. There is now a generation of young people, most of whom don’t know how to mend clothes or shoes and who have no concept of making things last; we need to move back into a more ‘make do and mend’ mentality and enable people, so they can do things for themselves. There are many people who are retired or become unemployed, who have skills that can be utilised and who are also made to feel that they no longer have any use – this is a travesty – these skills need to be kept alive and shared to help people to help themselves where possible. It would also be a boost for the local economy – people would be going to repair businesses in their locality if the repair was beyond what they could safely carry out themselves. The initiative definitely wants to encourage the public to make use of their local cobblers etc. too as not everything can be fixed at home and volunteers at the event will be making sure that people are aware of safety implications when repairing items! Offering items on forums such as Freegle and Freecycle is also something which will be promoted – if an item really is beyond saving someone else may be able to use the parts to repair something they have. We are very interested in hearing from people who would like to volunteer their skills and time on the day, seamstresses, joiners, furniture makers, electricians, cobblers etc., and to help get Sheffield repairing. Contact via email [email protected] or ring the Farm on 0114 258 0482 for more details, or the Repair Sheffield website www.repairsheffield.org

Sharrow Lantern Carnival Sunday 7th April from 7.30pm It's almost time for parading through the streets of Sharrow in a blaze of light from all our amazing handmade lanterns - from Mount Pleasant Park (departing at 8pm) to the General Cemetery Park (9pm for fire spinners and music) : party time to celebrate the bringing of Spring. The Sharrow Lantern Carnival, first held in 2004, has become one of Sheffield’s great free community events, involving over 100 volunteers in the planning and delivery of the carnival and over 3000 people attending from across Sheffield. This Lantern Carnival is intended to bring the community together and demonstrate their wealth of creativity - encouraging people to participate, collaborate and communicate rather than simply spectate. The carnival will be postponed to the 14th April if it rains on the 7th.

Jack Massey reports on Sheffield’s very own Peregrine Falcons Now the good news. After the nonsense last year about listed buildings etc, common sense has prevailed, and we have a webcam on the Peregrine eyrie, and it's wonderfully clear. If I'm being incredibly picky, it could do with moving a bit to the left, so that we can see a bit more of the perch and less of the side. If the Peregrine is still sitting where it was at half past eight this morning, it won't be in view. That said, if they produce young, we'll have a marvellous view of them. Click on www.sbsg.org, which takes you to the home page of the Sheffield Bird Study Group, and then click on the link for Peregrine Webcam. Two clicks and you're there. While you're on line, why don't you do it? Enjoy yourselves. Ed. For those not yet on line, in 2010 a nesting box was placed on the church rooftop, which is now home to Yorkshire’s first urban breeding pair of Peregrine Falcons. The Peregrine can be seen on St George's church in Mappin Street. This Grade II listed building closed in 1981 and was in 1994 converted by Sheffield University for use as a lecture theatre and student accommodation. Jack adds:- The university really is God's Little Acre at the moment, with a pair of great crested grebes on Crookes Valley Lake.
