Due to the closure of The Building Society in Ashbourne I have had to move the kniveton Newsletter account to the Leek Building Society in Ashbourne. There are now 3 signatories to this account myself– Mary Vaughan, June Lomas and Lewis Rose. This does mean that if you pay for an advert or give the News Letter a donation towards printing the cheques much be made out to one of the 3 of us personally and not Kniveton Newsletter as previously.. Thank You, Mary Vaughan

We're not doing a Christian Aid collection this year but are having a coffee morning in the village hall from 10am on Saturday 7th June. Please feel free to come along!

3 Tim Parkin (Police, Community Information Officer, Derbyshire) This is a reminder to residents to be cautious if you re- ceive unexpected emails from official looking organisations.

For example, you receive an email that looks like it’s from your bank. The message may ask you to ‘update’, ‘validate’ or ‘confirm’ your details. It will probably direct you to a website that looks just like your bank’s site.

Scam emails are designed to trick you into revealing your personal information and pass- words so the scammers can raid your account, run up bills or commit financial crimes in your name. This is called phishing.

Protect yourself Remember: although your bank or other organisation may contact you by email, they will never ask you to confirm your user name and password by clicking on a link in an email and visiting a website. Read the advice on www.banksafeonline.org.uk

Unsure about an e-mail you have received? Some common forms of false e-mails include:  Claims that people have won on a national / state lottery (known as fake lottery scams).  Claims that people have been left money in a will (known as will frauds).  Requests from banks or other financial institutions for customers to verify their security details (known as phishing frauds).  Requests for help from people to assist in moving large sums of money from one juris- diction to another, in return for a high percentage fee (known as advanced fee, or "419" frauds).  Requests to people using Internet auction sites to remit monies owed via routes other than the official settlement system run by the genuine Internet site.  Claim that you are owed a Tax Return from the council or HMRC.  Claim from someone you may know saying they are stranded abroad after being robbed and needing funds to get back. This usually occurred when someone’s email mailing list has been compromised.  Claim that you owe money to a utility company and you may be cut off unless you click a link to update your details.

If you receive any of these kinds of e-mails and if you are unsure about any e-mail you re- ceive, the best general advice we can give is do not respond to it in any way. Delete the e- mail without replying to it. Report scam emails to Action Fraud at [email protected] To report fraud, get advice or view the latest fraud news and alerts visit www.actionfraud.org.uk Action Fraud is the UK's national fraud and internet crime reporting centre.

Newhouse Farm – Cllr Rose informed the meeting that DDDC Planning Department is monitoring the removal of old vans and the current level of activity in terms of numbers and possible events. A grate at the corner of Pethills Lane needs unblocking. A noisy manhole cover opposite church was reported and DCC Highways carried out a repair – but on the wrong manhole cover! Vegetation overhanging the raised footway on Longrose Lane is making it difficult for pedestrians. Residents with properties backing onto the footway are urged to keep hedges well cut back. Councillors to look into involving Derbyshire Wildlife Trust in securing a long term solution. A programme and expenditure for footpath maintenance to be discussed at next meeting in July. 8 Rectors Ramblings – Time Out to Take Stock

I wonder what people think as they drive through the villages in our area? Some might see them as idyllic, sleepy places, the perfect location to get away from it all. Others will be so busy or distracted, focussed on getting to where they want to be that they won’t even notice the beauty of the surroundings they are passing through.

For those who live here – it can be a similar experience: for some, life is idyllic and they feel free from the stresses of everyday life. For many, if not most, life is hectic, busy, full of things to do and challenges to be tackled. When life is busy, how often do we make the effort to stand still, look around and enjoy our surroundings and those close to us?

It’s important in life to have those moments when we press the pause button. Jesus would often take himself off to a quiet place to think and to pray. He needed time away from all the demands that people placed on him.

As a group of five churches, we too will be taking time out to pause and reflect. On June 28th we are having a Benefice away day where all members of our churches are invited to take a day out to think about where we are at the moment – and to look ahead to where we want to be. That will involve thinking about our communities and the ways in which we can serve them.

Pausing, taking time to take stock isn’t always easy – particularly if there 101 other things you could be getting on with. But it is a discipline which can bear much fruit, and can in fact save you time and effort in the long run.

I once travelled on the back of a friend’s motorcycle from Baslow to Scarborough. Not long into the journey we sensed we were going in the wrong direction – but my friend continued to ride for several miles until we eventually pulled into a service station. We checked the map and then realised we had indeed gone the wrong way. If we’d stopped to check our direction earlier– we would have got to our destination a lot sooner!

Rev Phil Michell

A date for your diary. This year the Flood Fuddle is on Friday 5th September. More details in the next News Letter. For the newcomers in the village this is a good opportunity for a social evening in the village. Botty

9 Chapel News – memories and celebrations. The Methodist Chapel had two special events in May, both of which were at the main church in Ashbourne. On 9th May we came together with friends from the chapel and the village to remember and give thanks for the life of Joe Stubbs, husband to Enid, nee Bott, and brother-in-law of David (Bott) from Brook Farm. The church was packed, with standing room only, such was the esteem in which Joe was held. The singing of rousing hymns raised the roof, and projected photos of Joe, Enid and their family were a delight to see, and brought many memories. Until his stroke Joe had a beautiful tenor voice, and it was a great sadness to him, and others, that he was no longer able to sing the praises of the Lord, and preaching was also denied him. He will be long remembered in many circles. After the service we had opportunity to share further memories over tea and cakes. Our second celebration took place on 11th May, again at Ashbourne Methodist Church. This time we joined with friends from the Circuit, as well as friends from the village, to acknowledge a special anniversary. It is 60 years since Sister Merle Wilde was accredited as a Local Preacher (Lay Reader), a great achievement. Merle first ‘heard the call’ at an Anniversary Service in Kniveton Chapel, later accepting a further call to offer for the Diaconate, and then missionary service in Africa. Once again, the church was full, and Merle was presented with a framed certificate to mark the occasion. We congratulate Merle, and thank her for all she does, not only for the Chapel, but also in the Kniveton community, where she is well known and much loved. Although now in her 90’s Merle continues to take services around the Circuit and undertakes pastoral visits. After the service we had the pleasure of sharing lunch in the church hall. As mentioned in the last Newsletter we celebrate the Chapel Anniversary on27th July, when we will be dedicating a new Communion table for the chapel. The table will be dedicated to the memory of one of our late village members, Mrs Phyllis Rayworth, whom many of you will remember. In her later years Phyllis was unable to get to the chapel but we still kept close contact with her, sometimes meeting in her cottage. We hope to have Phyllis’s family with us on this occasion. You will perhaps remember that I said in the previous report that the table is being made by James Howe, who had links with Kniveton. We hope that James will also be able to join us on the 27th July. We would be delighted to see friends from the village on this special Sunday. Betty Hadley. Chapel Steward.

11 The Get Together Club

Our meeting on 20th March was held at Chatsworth Court in Ashbourne and our guest speaker was Nigel Brown from Nigel’s butchers. Nigel was surprised when members asked him to speak about his trade of butchery. He had us all in fits of laughter and one or two people were intrigued when he told us all about the different cuts of meat and where they came from on the animal, we also discussed offal and what we used after the war against nowadays

We welcomed The Air Ambulance to our meeting on 17th April. The talk was very inter- esting. A collection was made by members and this was gratefully received.

We set off for the picturesque vale of Llangollen through the Welsh foothills on 8th May. Unfortunately it was raining when we set off but the weather picked up and we had a really good day. Some members enjoyed the train journey taking in the Welsh countryside as did members who went on the horse drawn barge. We were able to walk along the river Dee and enjoy the afternoon sun. We called for coffee in the morning and dinner on the way home at The Thatch, Faddiley.

Chatsworth Court was the venue for the meeting on 15th May when PCSO Kate Wakefield and colleague PCSO Peter Jones were the guest speakers. They gave a very interesting talk on the roles of PCSO’s within the community and were open to any questions from mem- bers.

If you would like to come along to any of our meetings where you will be made most wel- come or, have a copy of the programme please contact Liz (346078).
