The fourteenth century of my novel will be mainly evoked in terms of smell and visceral feelings, and it will carry an undertone of general disgust rather than hey-nonny nostalgia’ - Anthony Burgess, Paris Review, 1973 The novel Burgess referred to in 1973 was never published, but his original script which actually took the form of a screenplay, remained in the archives of the International Anthony Burgess Foundation and has now been adapted by Adam Roberts into a compelling new novel.
