For the price of a bike you can experience the most popular section of the , the Poolburn Gorge. The view really is different in both directions!

Set off from our depot and ride a short hop to Lauder where refreshments await at the Stationside cafe if you need them. Wind your way into the Poolburn Gorge and keep a sharp eye out for the Karearea, ’s native falcon who have made the gorge their home. Pass through two tunnels and reach the highest viaduct on the trail, the Poolburn Viaduct. You’ll have ridden 13km at this stage making a 26km round trip. If you’re feeling adventurous, keep pedaling and take in the sights of the as captured by Grahame Sydney earlier paintings…. it hasn’t changed much, still a place of spectacular landscapes in all directions. Those of you that are hardy might even continue onto (30km) and turn around then.

When you do eventually head back, you’ll be trending downhill making for an easier ride home. The Stationside Cafe will still be there is you need it. If you find there is still something in your tank when you reach Omakau then cap it off with a tiki-tour through the gold mining town of Ophir. In the Summer, go swimming in the Manuherikea river, we will direct you to the swimming holes and rope swings
