    Minnesota River Weekly Update January 21, 2009 Minnesota River Watershed Alliance Quarterly Meeting Over thirty people came out for last night’s Minnesota River Watershed Alliance quarterly meeting in Hutchinson. After discussing the five potential initiatives identified at the October meeting, the group picked the Minnesota River Paddle Patch/Decal and River Friendly Label as the “Clean Up the Minnesota River” issue to focus on in 2009. A number of sub committees have been formed to move the issue forward. More information on Minnesota River Paddle Patch/Decal and River Friendly Label will be forthcoming in the near future. Big Stone II Coal Plant Transmission Line Approved The Minnesota Public Utilities Commission (PUC) approved by a 5 to 0 vote the construction of 112 miles of transmission lines in Minnesota. According to the Utility companies who proposed the Big Stone II Coal-fired plant, this was the last step needed to start construction. The five utility companies behind the project said they couldn’t go ahead with the plant construction without new transmission lines in Minnesota. A number of environmental concerns over this coal-generated power plant have included carbon dioxide and mercury emissions, water usage and coal ash. If construction moves forward, Big Stone II would come on line in 2015 at a cost of $1.6 billion, which includes the new transmission lines. Five environmental groups opposed to the plant have said they would appeal the PUC decision in court.

    Siren songs or path to salvation? Interpreting the visions of web technology at 1 a UK regional newspaper in crisis, 2006-11 Abstract A five-year case study of an established regional newspaper in Britain investigates journalists about their perceptions of convergence in digital technologies. This research is the first ethnographic longitudinal case study of a UK regional newspaper. Although conforming to some trends observed in the wider field of scholarship, the analysis adds to skepticism about any linear or directional views of innovation and adoption: the Northern Echo newspaper journalists were observed to have revised their opinions of optimum web practices, and sometimes radically reversed policies. Technology is seen in the period as a fluid, amorphous entity. Central corporate authority appeared to diminish in the period as part of a wider reduction in formalism. Questioning functionalist notions of the market, the study suggests cause and effect models of change are often subverted by contradictory perceptions of particular actions. Meanwhile, during technological evolution the ‘professional imagination’ can be understood as strongly reflecting the parent print culture and its routines, despite a pioneering a new convergence partnership with an independent television company. Its print circulations are falling faster than ever, staff numbers are being reduced, and the market- driven financial structure is undergoing deep instability. To provide united, consistent and broad messaging for the Minnesota housing community. Support and promote the Housing Policy Work Group’s policy agenda. Raise awareness of housing issues, and the importance of affordable housing options for people along the entire housing spectrum. STRATEGIES 1.
