The Cape Fine & Rare Wine Auction, established in 1975 as the Nederburg Auction, is one of the most prestigious events on the South African wine calendar.
10 2021 Catalogue There is no way around it: 2020 introduced unprecedented challenges to the wine world, not only in South Africa, but globally.
However, testament to the tenacity and spirit of innovation in the wine industry, the 2021 Auction has reinvented itself in a modern, hybrid format with both online and in-person bidding.
In association with Christie's, the auction will again be hosted at the Rupert Museum in Stellenbosch. Housing a collection of works by some of South Africa's most celebrated artists, the Museum provides the perfect backdrop to showcase this selection of South Africa's vinous treasures.
Nederburg has always been a champion of South African fine wine and the heritage inherent to it. It is in this spirit that Nederburg proudly continues its sponsorship of the event, as one of the world’s five most recognized wine auctions, alongside the auctions of Hospices de Beaune in France and Kloster Eberbach in Germany.

The wines selected for the 2019 Cape Fine & Rare Wine Auction were painstakingly curated by some of the most respected South African wine insiders, including Master of Wine (MW) Cathy van Zyl, Wine Critic and Columnist, Michael Fridjhon, Wine Judge and General Manager of Singita Premier Wine Direct, François Rautenbach and Sommelier, Joseph Dhafana.
Commenting on the selection process, Michael Fridjhon said:
This is the first time to my knowledge that the selection process for an auction of this kind has included criteria around investment potential over and above a rigorous wine quality “assessment. The older examples were checked to ensure they had aged gracefully. Where necessary mature wines were recorked. Everything has been done to ensure a perfect experience for the buyers.”
Joseph Dhafana
Zimbabwean-born Joseph has captivated a global audience with his life story of adversity and ultimate victory over hardship: he entered the country as a refugee nearly ten years ago, working in gardens and bars before becoming one of South Africa’s best known and respected sommeliers as head sommelier at La Colombe in Cape Town. So respected in fact, that Joseph was awarded the prestigious 2019 Eat Out Wine Service Award for his contribution to wine service in the country. This prestigious title is supported with qualifications from the Cape Wine Academy, WSET, Michael Fridjhon’s Wine Tasting Academy and the Court of Master Sommeliers in Europe. In 2017 and 2018 he captained the Zimbabwean Wine Tasting Team at the International Wine Tasting Championships in France, an achievement which has been made the focus of a major international documentary – due for release in 2021. Throughout all of this, Joseph has also acted as a wine judge on several of South Africa’s esteemed tasting panels since 2014. Joseph recalls having his first sip of wine at age 29, a seminal moment which has since dictated his journey. Eager to learn even more about the product, Joseph explored winemaking in 2014 guided by top Swartland producers Chris Mullineux, Eben Sadie and Roger Clayton. In addition to all his achievements, Joseph also adds winemaker and distiller to his name, with his Mosi Wines and Spirits brand firmly established with a Syrah, Chenin Blanc and Gin in bottle – the latter made from botanicals found in his homeland.
François Rautenbach
François’ passion for wine and the industry has developed over many years. Founding general manager of the Singita Premier Wine Direct programme for Singita Conservation’s environmentally conscious hospitality. Sourcing, maturing and supplying wines for the group’s 15 award-winning lodges and camps across the sustainable one-million-acre guardianship of Southern and East Africa conservation properties. François has been a judge at numerous top wine shows and competitions and since 2011 has been a senior judge at the Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show.

Michael is a highly regarded international wine judge, one of South Africa’s leading wine writers, and Visiting Professor of Wine Business at UCT’s Graduate School of Business. He has over 40 years’ experience in the production, wholesale and retail sectors of the industry and is the author, co-author or contributor to over 30 books. In his weekly column for Business Day, he often provokes very necessary conversations and debate on the current status of the South African wine industry and the people who are employed by it and derive benefit from it. Michael also contributes to various international wine publications and provides all the wine scores for winewizard.co.za.
Cathy van Zyl MW
Cathy is the first South African to successfully pass the Master of Wine examination whilst living on the tip of Africa. She judges locally and internationally and is a member of the Institute of Masters of Wine’s Council. She spends most of her wine-time as the associate editor of Platter's Wine Guide South African Wine Guide and has completed over 20 Cape Town Cycle Tours (previously The Argus Cycle Tour).

Each of the wines sold at the Cape Fine & Rare Wine Auction has earned the Auction’s Seal, which is affixed to each bottle as a mark of quality and authenticity.
This seal is an endorsement and a reassurance for both trade and consumers that these wines represent the pinnacle of rare, properly matured, fine South African wines.
Every wine selected for the Cape Fine & Rare Wine Auction has to fulfil the following criteria before it can be deemed worthy to come under the hammer:
1 The Cape Fine & Rare Wine Auction encourages winemakers to submit wines that they feel represent the pinnacle of their winemaking skills, and which are no longer available anywhere else in order to enhance the rarity factor for the wines that will be auctioned.
2 Each wine must pass the exhaustive selection process that sees them surpass character, style, rarity, demand and quality benchmarks, as judged by the panel of wine experts.
3 The final consideration is whether the wines will, in the opinion of the selection panel, continue to evolve and mature in order to provide a return on investment for buyers. This unique approach presents buyers with the opportunity to purchase fine, bottle- aged wines that they can sell or serve immediately, confident in the knowledge that the wine will continue to mature and evolve should they wish to extend its shelf life in order to extract additional value.

Charlie Foley joined Christie’s in 2014 after working for a fine wine merchant in the City. He graduated from Newcastle University, where he achieved 1st Class Honours in Classics, specializing in the ancient wine trade in Rome and Greece. He has worked for Steenberg and Graham Beck in South Africa and vineyards in Argentina and won a scholarship to attend the European Wine Bloggers Conference in Turkey and subsequently also travelled with the Conference to Rioja. He is studying for his Master of Wine and has been pleased to work on auctions at Christie’s such as the Avery Family Collection, the Cellars of the Earl of Halifax and Wines from the Malbec Family Collection. He was the first to sell the world’s most expensive liquid, with a bottle of 1926 The Macallan, Michael Dillon hammering for £1.2 million under his gavel. He conducts charity auctions on behalf of great causes and is delighted to join the vibrant and dynamic South African wine community at this most prestigious auction.
Charlie will only be the Cape Fine & Rare Wine Auctions fifth auctioneer since it was established as the Nederburg Auction in 1975.

Gyles 4 (6 x 750ml) Webb planted the first vines on the property in 1985 and by the mid-1990's 100% Rhine Riesling the wines were sold out within a month of release, making it one of the most WO Stellenbosch sought-after wine estates in South Africa. Only estate grown fruit is used Winemaker in the Thelema wines, and decades of Rudi Schultz knowledge and experience of the site has resulted the production of wines that truly reflect a sense of place. Soil quality and Alc % 12.11 sustainability is of the utmost importance, RS 10.7 and these practices include the removal TA 6.6 of alien vegetation, the production of pH 3.2 estate grown compost, a water recycling FSO 24 2 plant, the use of solar energy as well as TSO 100 2 non-chemical treatment of vineyard pests. ABOUT RESERVE PRICE As a young winemaker traveling the R 6 000 per Case world, Niels confirmed his love for Shiraz when working a harvest in Quantity & Case Size Australia, but it was a winery in Chile 5 (6 x 750ml) that inspired his wine-making method. “It was as if I’d gone back 20 years; it 100% Shiraz was ramshackle and chaotic, but they had great fruit and passion and I’d never WO Western Cape seen that quality of wine”, he explains.
Winemaker Niels Verburg WINE NOTES 2008 is the first vintage of Luddite Shiraz that contains more than 50% of Alc % 14.78 our own grapes. Due to the fullness and RS 2.7 ripeness of the vintage, we allowed a TA 5.8 longer post-fermentation maceration pH 3.4 to improve the tannin structure and FSO 14 2 balance the fruit. This has meant that TSO 92 2 the wine has aged beautifully with this backbone of tannin supporting the fruit.

This block is WO Swartland a later ripener due to south facing slopes. This Chenin blanc vineyard was planted on a "massale" selection method and Winemaker grafted in the vineyard onto the root stocks a year after the David Sadie root stocks were planted. Students who have successfully completed the PYDA curriculum have access to this youth-led business hub, which further strengthens the immersive experience provided by the PYDA.
Students learn relevant technical and business skills to equip them for employment but also for an entrepreneurial path with a skill-focus approach that teaches students how to conceptualise and implement business ideas. This holistic focus prepares youth for opportunities, while helping them to create their own.
Innovation is at the core of PYDA’s programme and the graduates’ spirit, and a peer-supported environment, enable them to test ideas and start small businesses in demand-led sectors such as food security, wine agriculture and retail. This initiative by the PYDA, supported by the Cape Fine & Rare Wine Auction, hopes to alleviate the high youth unemployment crisis in South Africa.
