Dance Positive Pete- Mentoring Service for Young People aged 7 – 18

Could you be that person that helps make a difference to a young person’s life?

Positive Pete is a registered charity committed to help- ing young people. We believe that all young people have Value regardless of their background or the cur- rent circumstances they find themselves in. We are looking for Volunteers to train as Mentors to work in schools in the Beckenham/Bromley area We support you by: Providing Accredited training, which takes place on a Saturday, along with ongoing support. Bromley Schools Dance Showcase – Monday 27th January 2020 To Find out more about how to become one of our Volunteer Mentors Contact: th Monday 27 January was a wonderful evening in the Langley Performance Hall, where students got Denise Riley at [email protected] to see what the neighbouring Bromley schools are doing in their Dance Departments and be inspired. Website www.positivepete.co.uk Students watched in the audience with parents, family and friends and performed one at a time. It was such a creative and enjoyable night! The Brom- ley schools performing were , Ra- vensbourne School, LPSG, Charles Darwin, Eden Park and Darrick Wood. LPSB Dance did us very proud!! We had GCSE year 10 and 11 perform a street dance piece of chore- ography and KS3 Musical Theatre club showcased their hard work focusing on choreography from Aladdin. A massive thank you to all the students who took part and to Mrs Crawford for her commitment to the Dance Department! Last thank you goes to the technical crew who are all LPSB students and the evening was seamless due to their hard work and dedication! Year 11 We will shortly be sending home a GCSE Revision timetable booklet which Heads of Department have put togeth- er as a guideline of how to approach revision in their subject. It takes it week-by-week from 10th February and lists the topics to cover in the run-up to the exams. PPE Results afternoon on Friday 7th February will be an opportunity for students to reflect on their PPE perfor- mance and write an action plan which they can use to improve their performance for the summer. These action plans will be shared with parents at the academic mentoring sessions which occur on February 10th, 12th and 13th. Letters regarding academic mentoring have been sent home with students. As previously mentioned during the Year 11 Parents’ Information Evening in October and in Year 11 assembly, there will not be study leave during the GCSE exams this summer. Lessons will continue in each subject until that subject’s exams have occurred. We will re-write the timetable to ensure that there is a morning lesson in the morning before an afternoon exam in that subject.

Sixth Form Sixth Form Open Evening – External Student Thank you to all of the parents and students who attended the Sixth Form Open Evening for external students last night, the event was well attended and we hope that it was informative and helpful. The application forms for both INTERNAL and EXTERNAL students are now open on the website. The deadline for applications to the Sixth Form will be Friday 6th March.

Year 13 PPE Week commences Monday 10th February to Friday 14th February. All Year 13 students will sit an examination style task in each of their subjects. Students should ensure they are well-prepared and that their classwork and homework notes are in order. They should discuss topics that they need to revise with subject teachers and ensure that they begin their revision as soon as possible. The PPE results afternoon will take place on Monday 2nd March.

University Taster Courses and Summer Schools A number of taster courses and summer schools are being offered by universities across the country. These are a fantastic opportunity for students to gain an insight into the topic they may wish to study at university and at- tendance looks very favourable on UCAS applications. Students should see their Form Tutor, Mr Butterworth or Mr Edwards for further support and guidance.

Sixth Form Parents’ Meetings Dates for your Diaries Our next Year 13 Parents’ Meetings take place on Thursday 12th March.

Sixth Form Bursary Fund Our Sixth Form Bursary Fund is open throughout the school year to support students who are experiencing finan- cial difficulties. Students should see a member of the Sixth Form team for an application form.

Great Balloon Debate On Tuesday 28th January, sixteen Year 8 students took part in the Great Balloon Debate finale in the Performance Hall, showcasing their persuasive writing and public speaking skills to their peers and a panel of judges. All Year 8 students had previously researched, written and delivered a speech in their English lessons, in which they argued that a particular famous or significant person from history should be ‘saved’ from a hot air balloon crash. The purpose of this competition is for students to argue that their chosen person should be the Last Man (or Woman!) Standing. The classroom knock-out stages then led to sixteen students being chosen to present their speeches again - this time to a panel of judges, including their Headteacher and Head of Year, who would crown the overall winners and runners-up. The English Department would like to give a special congratulations to our winners - Oscar Child, who spoke pas- sionately on behalf of Greta Thunberg, and Fraser Jackson, who convincingly represented Tim Berners-Lee in the competition. Both Oscar and Fraser were polished, professional and – above all – persuasive enough to win the favour of the judges. Our runners-up were Marvin Gordon and James Killick, who also wowed the judges with their efforts. Mr Parsons commented that the speeches performed in the final this year were by far the most in- teresting and well-crafted he had seen in his seven years as a judge in this competition, so a very well done to all of those competitors who took place in the final!
