Endowed with a very special velvety timbre, dark color and exceptionally wide vocal range, Ewa Podleś is considered to be one of the rare true contraltos of our time. Winner of many great competitions including the Tchaikovsky International Competition, she completed her formal musical education exclusively at the F.Chopin Academy of Music in Warsaw. Her repertoire spans from baroque to Penderecki, including Rossini’s belcanto, dark heroines of Verdi and Strauss and also works by romantic and Russian composers. She has performed in all great opera theaters, among them at La Scala, MET, Covent Garden, Théâtre du Châtelet, Deutsche Oper, Teatre Liceu in Barcelona, Teatro Real in Madrid. An avid recitalist, she made successful appearances at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Salle Gaveau in Paris, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, London’s Wigmore Hall, Théâtre des Champs-Elysées and Warsaw Philharmonic, and also at the and at the Festivals of Aix-en-Provence, Flanders and Montpellier and at Festival International de Lanaudière. She has worked with many important conductors, among others with David Atherton, Myung-Whun Chung, Charles Dutoit, Gianluigi Gelmetti, Christopher Hogwood, Armin Jordan, Lorin Maazel and Peter Maag. Ewa Podles has often worked with Marc Minkowski and “Les Musiciens du Louvre”; with them she recorded Ariodante for Deutsche Grammophon (recording which won the prestigious Diapason d’Or) and Armide by Gluck. Other recordings which need to be mentioned are Il tramonto by Respighi, Orfeo by Gluck, the II and la III Symphony by Mahler, Alexander Nevsky , a compilation of Rossini opera arias (which won the “Preis der Deutschen Schallplatten Kritik”), and a CD with Russian melodies, together with Graham Johnson (which won the “Grand Prix de L'Académie Française du Disque”). The performances of recent seasons include (Quickly) at Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino under the baton Zubin Mehta and in Stockholm with the Sveriges Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Daniel Harding, La fille du régiment (marquise of Berkenfield) at Teatro Real de Madrid, Cendrillon, La fille du régiment and Siegfried (Erda) at Liceu de Barcelona, Ciro in Babilonia (title role) at Rossini Opera Festival di Pesaro. Other recent engagements have included La fille du régiment at ROH Covent Garden and at San Diego Opera, Rusalka at Opéra de Monte-Carlo, Giulio Cesare, Das Rheingold, La Gioconda and Semiramide at Liceu di Barcelona, Falstaff at Bayerische Staatsoper, Le nozze di Teti e Peleo at Rossini Opera Festival di Pesaro, at Opéra de Toulon and at Canadian Opera Company Toronto, Siegfried at Seattle Opera, Händel’s Rodelinda at Dallas Opera, Giulio Cesare at San Diego Opera and Tancredi in Warsaw.
