Board of Trustees Celebrating the Jewels of the Civil Rights Movement

Chairman For this year’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Luncheon, our committee thought it crucial to Eddie L. Jones II celebrate the African-American women of the Civil Rights Movement. We understand that in our patriarchal society the women who labored and stood in front of King, behind King, and beside King are Vice-Chairman often overlooked and their stories go untold. Moreover, if it had not been for the women of the Civil Rights Marcus A. Payne Movement, there would not have been a movement, and King would not have been the man that we have come to honor. Treasurer Terry Young We have selected seven women to honor for the 2013 Scholarship Luncheon. We are calling them “The Jewels of the Civil Rights Movement”. We have first and foremost called them “Jewels” because of the Financial Secretary symbolism of the beloved Jewels of Alpha Phi Alpha. As Alpha men we honor, remember, and pay tribute Jared Rogers to the pioneers of our fraternity. Our goal is that we would do the same with the seven women (listed below). Secondly, when jewelry is made, jewels are chosen for their luster and beauty to add value to the Recording Secretary jewelry. Likewise, we know that these women have played a major part in the Civil Rights movement. We John W. Lee III have selected the following seven women, five of whom are members of Divine Nine Sororities:

Trustees • Mary McLeod Bethune ( Sorority, Inc.) Alfred Allen Jr. • (Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.) Larue M. Fitch • ( Sorority, Inc.) Andres L. Hernandez • (Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.) Anthony Q. Sartin • Mary Church Terrell (Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.) Walter D. Weathers • Frances Ellen Watkins Theo Whittier II • Ida B. Wells-Barnett Ernest D. Williams To pay tribute to these Jewels of the Civil Rights Movement, we will be recognizing Chicagoland chapters of Divine Nine sororities, and non Divine Nine affiliated women and organizations whose programs live out the legacy of one of the Jewels of the Civil Rights Movements. Members of the Chapter and Foundation are encouraged to nominate an organization or individual by completing the form on the next page.

Sincerely, Ernest D. Williams, Program Committee Co-Chair Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Luncheon
