The second takes a look at the process from rehearsals to the Tony Awards for four Broadway shows – Wicked, Avenue Q, Boy George’s Taboo, and Caroline, or Change. For any fan of Broadway this show is a must see! Also expected to grab some attention is the late night Guilty Pleasures Gay Grindhouse Double-Feature on May 26th at 11:00pm, which Salton is very excited about. ”We will be showing the gay zombie movie The Creatures from the Pink Lagoon as well as In The Blood about a guy coming out of the closet who gets visions of a serial killer when he gets aroused. It is hilarious and pretty campy, they did a great job with the fi lm and the guys are really good looking, but it’s not a serious thriller.” The full listing of fi lms is available with detailed descrip- tions on Fairy Tales’ website as well as an event listing here in GayCalgary and Edmonton magazine. There are a lot of great fi lms to see, so bargain hunters will want to take advantage of one of two festival packages. ”We are offering the Fabulous Five pack, which is a passport to any fi ve fi lms with the exclusion of the two opening gala fi lms, for $45,” Salton explained. “We will also have the package that offers all 15 festival packs for $99, which if you want to go to everything gives you six programs for free.” For nine years Fairy Tales has strived to awe, provoke thought and discussion, and most importantly entertain us. Salton’s enthusiasm is infectious and the line up this year strives once again to send its patrons out of the the- atre doors talking about another successful year of Fairy Tales. gaycalgary and edmonton magazine #43, May 2007 35 Judy Shepard Matthew’s Mom Keeps Light Shining Bright

By Benjamin Hawkcliffe Individual | Spotlight For many members of the LGBT community, the relationship we have with our mothers may vary, but they are our Moms no matter what. With May being the month of Mother’s Day, it is a time for us to pay tribute to the women who gave us life and raised us. Judy Shepard won’t get to spend Mother’s Day with her eldest son. On October 6th, 1998, her gay son Matthew was attacked by Russell Henderson and Aaron McKinney and left tied to a fence to die in a remote area in Laramie, Wyo- ming. His passing from his injuries on October 12th and the subsequent trial of his assailants (both of whom are serving double-life sentances) brought gay rights and hate crimes to the forefront of the world’s focus. Nearly a decade later, Judy Shepard continues to keep her son’s spirit alive through work with the Matthew Shepard foundation, whose goal is to replace hate with understand- ing, compassion and acceptance. On April 5th, 2007, eight years to the day of Henderson’s sentencing, Shepard spoke as part of the OutRights Human Rights conference. Her 70-minute speaking engagement took its audience through a full range of emotions, from laughter as she shared anecdotes about her son, to heartbreak and tears when discussing his death. Shepard started by recounting the Impact Statement she read at the sentencing of Hender- precious son. It is one way we can honor our son. Matt is no longer with us because two men learned that it was ok to hate. Somehow, somewhere they received the message that the lives of the others don’t deserve the respect and honor as the lives of us. They were given the impression that society condones or is at least indifference toward violence towards the others. We have become a S-I-C society – Silent, Indifferent and Complacent. For all who ask what they can do for Matt and other victims of hate, my answer is this. Educate, educate, educate. Bring understanding when you say hate and ignorance, bring light where you see darkness. ”For so long the community has been quiet and willing to accept what society is willing to allow us to have. Those days are long gone. It is time we used our beautiful voices, all of us, to express our opinions and tell our stories.” After reading her statement, Judy applauded Canada for legalizing same sex marriage. She spoke of living in the US and the foundation’s fi ght for change to hate crime legisla- tion. She spoke of the difference between the administra- tions of Bill Clinton and George W. Bush. ”In many, many ways, not just the gay community [has felt that] the last six years [of the Bush administration] have been just torture for us. Bill Clinton, even though he basi- cally screwed us over with don’t ask, don’t tell, he kept us on the front page. He always spoke of us in a positive manner and that we deserved equal rights, that everything should be ours. He at least kept us in a positive view and we accom- plished something. What we learned with both the Clinton and Bush administration [is that] you can’t accomplish ev- erything from the top down, you have to meet in the middle and work grassroots campaigns and change minds. For some reason, Americans think that they work for their rep- resentatives for congress. That is not true, they work for us, we elect them to do what we ask them to do. They don’t do that because we don’t call them, tell them and express what our lives are like. We don’t tell our stories. No one knows who we are and that we are just as horny as they are.” This is where the majority of Judy Shepard’s message was. She encouraged everyone to speak out as themselves and tell their stories. Many straight members of society have misconceptions about gay people, and when they discover someone they are friends with and care about is gay, they discover that person is exactly the same as the rest of soci- ety - the only difference is who they love. ”Be just like them. If you don’t talk about it, you set your- self apart. You aren’t giving them credit or the opportunity to know all of you. You have to tell your stories, be who you are. Talk to your families and tell them who you are and what you go through every day or they will not know how to help you. Even when they know you are out and accept who you are, do you share anything else with them? Do you introduce them to your friends, or discuss the same kinds of things that your straight sibling does? The idea here is you are equal in every way. There is no reason to set you apart from anyone else in your community except who you love. At the end of the day does that really matter? No, it doesn’t.” The Matthew Shepard Foundation www.matthewsplace.com

By Rob Diaz-Marino Interview | Music In November of last year I wrote a review of the Cliks then independently released album “Snake- house”. Much to my surprise, this month I received another copy of their CD through Warner Music, who recently picked up the album on their label. The band is comprised of Lucas Silveira (guitar/vo- cals), Morgan Doctor (drums), Nina Martinez (guitar) and Jen Benton (bass). As you may recall, Silveira was born female, but now identifi es as male. Silveira says the explo- sive CD “expresses everything about who I am, where I’ve come from and how this album came to be.” We sat down with the foursome at Money Pennies last month to fi nd out more about the band and their plans. “This band is a little different than a lot of other bands out there…because of the issues that it can bring to light. The way that people are seeing things now is really differ- ent. I mean, transgendered is not a new thing, and queer is not a new thing, but the way the world is receiving it is new. You can be trained back into it but, I’ve been working on this voice my entire life and I don’t feel like going there. So my main priority is my music, that’s the choice I’ve made. It’s also made me realize that having a beard and hair on my body, and maybe a couple more muscles doesn’t exactly make me more male or less male than anybody else. It’s who I identify with up here,” Silveira points to his head. “I have to be [comfortable] because when I fi rst came out, it was like, either you do this or things go bad. It was kind of weird because my entire life I thought, especially as a musician, if I do this my career is in the shitters. Like, who the hell is going to want to sign a transgendered sing- er? And it was funny because as soon as I said I’m just going to be who I am and be happy for me and do what I need to do, that’s when everything just started happen- ing. …A lot of people were like ‘oh, this is a bit of a schtick that you have.’ No. You know, being transgendered is not a schtick, it’s who I decided to be. And yes it makes for a good story, but it has nothing to do with that, it has to do with the fact that I am who I am and that’s it.” The Cliks are currently playing as part of the True Col- ors Tour 2007, hosted by Margaret Cho and also featuring Cyndi Lauper, Rosie O’Donnell, The Gossip, and many more performers. 50 gaycalgary and edmonton magazine #43, May 2007 Entire neigbhourhoods became known as “gay”; The Castro in San Francisco, West Hollywood in Los Angeles, The West End in Vancouver, St. Catherines in Montreal, and in Toronto. Here in Calgary, The Beltline, locat- ed between the CPR tracks and 17th Ave SW, while not quite a Village, for many years has been home to a high percentage of gay men, along with our clubs, cafes, shops, bathhouses, parks, and bars. As property taxes and rents skyrocketed, fewer and fewer could afford to live in “our” inner cities and usually now-gen- trifi ed neighbourhoods. We followed the mainstream trend of buying cheaper housing in the suburbs or otherwise spread- ing ourselves throughout the cities we lived in. Many heralded this as the dawning of a new age, where homosexuals weren’t confi ned to aging inner city neighbour- hoods but could live anywhere we damn well chose and be accepted. Now, it seems, we aren’t quite as welcome in those neighbourhoods as many of us thought. Whatever the faults of “the ghetto,” and there are those who believe there are several to be sure, such environs awarded us the certain level of security of knowing it was our turf, that we could go about our daily business without having to worry too much about the neighbours or disapproving looks if we appeared “too queer.” Gaybourhoods gave us a sense of belonging, of connectedness to our own that, I believe, is lack- ing when we are living amidst heterosexuals in suburbia (or elsewhere, for that matter). Life is diffi cult enough for many of us. If we feel ostracized or unwelcome in neighbourhoods, where ever they might be - if we are met with hostility or the cold shoulder by our neighbours, or 17 per cent of them - how can we feel secure and comfortable in our homes? There is much to be said for the creation and mainte- nance of queer space, and this includes carving out our own neighbourhoods. Various minorities before us have done so, thereby adding to the cosmopolitan fl avour of a city. Shop- ping in Little Italy, or going for Dim Sum in Chinatown, or whiling away the afternoon enjoying potato latkes and cream cheese blintzes in a Jewish Deli are experiences that add to living in a city. Mind you, I fully admit to a certain bias in favour of gay vil- lages (which to me would also include not just gay but LBTQ as well) and the various permutations such space creates. Such spaces are “ours.” This bias is reinforced knowing that 17 per cent of my fellow Canadians don’t really want me or my partner as neighbours. Maybe we should let them have their boring little neighbourhoods and expend our famous energy in creating our own space, and in the process help create a more vibrant, open and diverse city, as contradictory as that may sound.
