Batman: The Widening Gyre 2 Review. Kevin Smith's second outing with Batman fairs far better than the first. In his introduction to the collection of Batman: CacophonyKevin Smith admits the end result was only the second best Batman story he and friend Walt Flanagan were capable of, and that it was a dress rehearsal for the twelve-part series that would become Batman: The Widening Gyre. My reaction? Widening Gyre had better damn well be an improvement over Cacophonyor else Smith would be wise to walk away from the comic book game for good. Cacophony was Batman the Widening Gyre lousy comic book in every way, with amateurish art, unnatural dialogue and humor, and a derivative plot. Worse, Smith didn't seem to have anything original or even interesting to say about Batman, his villains or his world. Luckily for those of us who decided to come along for Smith and Flanagan's second Batman story despite their poor first outing, Widening Gyre is thus far a marked improvement over Cacophony. Yes, the art is still exceedingly amateurish, and the only thing Batman the Widening Gyre than Flanagan's Batman is his Superman. Still, the book is infinitely more enjoyable to read thanks to Smith, who changes his approach to Batman considerably. Smith brings his strengths as a writer to Batman's voice and characterization without making the Dark Knight sound like one of the characters from his films, which was definitely a problem in Cacophony. All in all, Smith seems to be having a lot of fun playing in Batman's toy box, but is still careful not to break any of the toys by smashing them together. Again, that was a big problem in Cacophony. The result feels like a classic Batman story in a number of ways without feeling like a rehash of old stories. Silver St. Cloud makes Batman the Widening Gyre triumphant return from the pages of Steve Englehart and Marshal Rogers' classic run, and Smith does a fantastic job casting her as "the one that got away. The plot continues to see Batman battle new and old foes as a mysterious masked vigilante lurks in the shadows and lends a helping hand. An opening scene in which Batman saves a young girl from a child molester named Fun Land features a strong exploration of the Caped Batman the Widening Gyre thought process, and a late issue scene brings back the creepy cannibal Cornelius Stirk to great effect. Stirk is a criminally underused rogue, and it's fun to see Smith get the most out of him. There's also another flashback to Batman and Robin's early days, and although I'm still not sure what purpose these scenes serve, I assume they have something to do with the story's title. But despite the improvement in writing, the art remains Batman the Widening Gyre major problem. Flanagan continues to have some Batman the Widening Gyre problems with anatomy, perspective and storytelling, and still can't draw Batman the same way twice, except when he draws Batman's cowl as a two-dimensional glob of ink. In the end, his shortcomings as an artist will likely overshadow anything Smith is able to accomplish with this series. Was this article informative? YES NO. In This Article. The fourth film set in the View Askewniverse is a hypothetical-scenario film revolving around the Catholic Church and Catholic belief, which caused organized protests and much controversy in many countries, delaying release of the film and leading to at least two death threats against Smith.[2][3] The film follows two fallen angels, Loki and Bartleby, who, through a loophole in Catholic Dogma, find a way to get back into Heaven after being cast out by God. • A Peircean Semiotics of Comic Book Onomatopoeia
Public Journal of Semiotics 6(1) Four-Color Sound: A Peircean Semiotics of Comic Book Onomatopoeia Sean A. Guynes Onomatopoeia are the representation or imitation in language of sounds from the natural world. They occur in the phonic modality of speech, the written modality, and a third modality combining word and image. The latter is a common device in the sequential art of comic strips and comic books, and is particular to the American tradition of comics. Onomatopoeia diversify the experience of sequential art and have unique signifying properties. Though there have been significant attempts to provide a structural analysis of the comics medium, these have often ignored onomatopoeia’s uses in the comics medium. This study utilizes the concept of an American Visual Language (Cohn, 2013) within a Peircean framework to offer theories of the individual (onomatopeme) and structural uses of word/image onomatopoeic expressions in mainstream American comic books. Keywords: comics, onomatopoeia, Peircean semiotics, American Visual Language, arthrology 1. Introduction Comics are a multimodal narrative form of sequential art created and enjoyed in distinct manifestations across the world. Comics studies is a relatively recent field of inquiry; as such, specific artistic and narrative phenomena exemplified in comics have been overlooked in favor of approaches that explore the medium as a whole (Groensteen, 2007; Cohn, 2013). Signification of onomatopoeia in comics is therefore underdeveloped, though the graphic representation of onomatopoeic sound has been considered en passant in general discussions (Smolderen, 2006; Groensteen, 2007; Cohn, 2013). Individual essays on the use of onomatopoeia in the Francophone and Japanese comics art traditions have also appeared (Khordoc, 2007; Petersen, 2009).

FANDOM AND BEYOND: ONLINE COMMUNITY, CULTURE, AND KEVIN SMITH FANDOM Tom Phillips Submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of East Anglia School of Film, Television and Media Studies 2013 ©This copy of the thesis has been supplied on condition that anyone who consults it is understood to recognise that its copyright rests with the author and that no quotation from the thesis, nor any information derived therefrom, may be published without the author’s prior, written consent. Abstract Fan studies literature has frequently been pervaded by the prevailing assumptions of what constitutes “fans” and their associated activities: fan art or fantext, cosplay, conjecture, activism – the things that fans supposedly do by definition – are those to which scholarly attention has most been paid. Yet the assumption that fandom can be defined by such explicit practices can be dangerous because of the subjective nature of respective fan cultures. Presenting a fan culture that questions the “assumed” nature of fandom and fan practices, this thesis is an examination of the fans of filmmaker and comedian Kevin Smith, investigating the ways in which community members negotiate and categorise their fandom and relationships with both each other and a communicative, media-literate producer. Since 1995, the View Askew Message Board has provided a dialogical, communicative platform for fans of Kevin Smith to define themselves as a collective group – or more frequently – a community. Through autoethnographic discussion, as well as qualitative research conducted both online and in person, this examination of users of the Board considers the nature of audience-producer relations, the intersection between on- and offline fannish and communal practices, and the extent to which the identity of “Kevin Smith fan” can be attributed within alternate contexts of fan productivity and (non) communal practice.

COLLEGE OF LITERATURE, SCIENCE, AND THE ARTS Spring 2013 chain reactions UPDATE Complex Effects What is that behemoth on the cover, you ask? We’re excited to tell you all about our chain reactions. CarTOONIST RUBE GOLDBErg drew over-engineered machines that performed simple tasks. Today, a “Rube Goldberg,” can be synonymous with confusion or com- plication, but the term has also evolved into a handy way of illustrating how pulling a string in one place can cause something else to happen in another. One small starting point — a press of a button or flick of the wrist — sets off a series of chain reactions so intertwined they can’t be separated from one another. Our Rube Goldberg machine, built on site here in LSA, is composed of materials representing the feature stories in this issue. Each article shows a way of getting from point A to point B, but with unexpected connections and reactions irrevocably altering the landscape as it’s in motion. The chain reaction begins with the launch of a replica of Richard Byrd’s famous Ford Trimotor airplane, used in his historic Antarctic flight. Spoiler alert, we’re going to tell you what our machine does next, so if you want to figure it out on your own, now is the time to study the cover before reading ahead. Orange “Hadron Collider” particles explode when Byrd’s plane (A) flies across the string releasing the globe (B) that tips over the water jug (C), which fills the backpack (D) and raises the tree branch (E). The branch releases the helicopter (F), which ro- tates as it lowers and simultaneously starts the golf ball (G) rolling on the track and causes the books (H) to fall in succession.
