Scope and Content

L. Richard Hammill (1913 - 1997) was born in Chico, . He completed his bachelor degree in theology from Walla Walla College, his Master degree from the Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary, and his doctorate in Old Testament Studies from the University of Chicago in 1950. He worked more than 40 years for the Seventh-day Adventist Church serving as a minister, missionary, professor, evangelist, church administrator, university president, and General Conference vice president. Hammill began his pastoral work in 1936 for the Washington Conference. In the 1940s he went with his family as a missionary in Vietnam and the . After returning to the at the end of World War II he worked at Southern Missionary College in Tennessee (1946-1955) and at the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventist in Washington D.C. In 1963 Hammill became the second president of Andrews University. He served in this capacity until 1976 and oversaw the period of largest growth for the University’s physical plant as well as its curriculum including graduate programs. In 1976 Hammill returned to the General Conference as a vice president, a position he held until his retirement in 1980. In this role he was deeply involved in the study and the Glacier View meeting which he planned. He died on March 28, 1997, after a long battle with cancer at his home in College Place, Washington. This collection contains some of Hammill’s personal items, correspondence, many of his published and unpublished writings including a rich collection of his sermons and talks, plus many significant papers by other Seventh-day Adventist theologians. In addition the collection includes important documents related to Seventh- day Adventist theological committees in which Hammill was an active participant such as: Daniel Committee, Church-State Committee, Geo-Science Committee, Biblical Research Fellowship Committee, Society of Biblical Literature, BRISCO, PREXAD, Glacier View and Desmond Ford Controversy and others. At the end there are materials related to Hammill’s presidency at Andrews University and few audio-visual records.

Arrangement

Although the Center for Adventist Research has processed the collection it has, in most cases, kept the original order of documents as compiled by Richard Hammill himself. Thus in some cases the order is not based on any specific criteria.
