ADVENT: Advent marks the start of a season of preparation that looks forward to the celebration of Christmas and the second coming of Christ. It is a time of reflection in preparing our hearts for the coming of Christ-we remember how our Savior humbled Himself to be born as a baby and live among those He would save. We remember the perfect life He lived doing the will of His Father, His sacrificial death on the cross, and how He was raised from the dead three days later, having paid the penalty in order to save all who would believe. Christians remember ’ promise to return again one day and restore everything fully. This season invokes feelings of expectation and hope! The word Advent comes from the Latin adventus, meaning “arrival” or “coming” form the word advenire (ad- “to” venire “come”). Advent is a reminder of how the Jewish people waited for the Messiah and how Christians and Messianic Jews wait for the second coming of Christ, today.

Advent also marks the start of the new , and it always begins on , which is the fourth Sunday before Christmas day.

Advent 2020 begins on Sunday, November 29th and ends on Thursday, December 24th.

OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST, KING OF THE UNIVERSE Sunday, November 22nd, 2020

Pope Pius XI instituted the Feast of in his Quas primas of 1925, in response to growing secularism and nationalism, and in the context of the unresolved Roman Question. The title of the feast was “Domini Nostri Jesu Christi Regis” ([of] Our Lord Jesus Christ the King), and the date was established as “the last Sunday of the month of October – the Sunday, that is, which immediately precedes the Feast of All ”. In John XXIII’s revision of the calendar in 1960, the date and title were unchanged but, according to the simplification of the ranking of feasts, it was classified as a feast of the first class. In his Mysterii Paschalis of 1969, Pope Paul VI amended the title of the Feast to “D.N. Iesu Christi universorum Regis” (Our Lord Jesus Christ King of the Universe). He also moved it to the new date of the final Sunday of the liturgical year, before the commencement of a new liturgical year on the First Sunday of Advent (the earliest date for which is 27 November). Through this choice of date “the eschatological importance of this Sunday is made clearer”. He assigned to it the highest rank of “”. In 2020, the Solemnity day falls on November 22. The liturgical for the day are colored white or gold, in keeping with other joyous feasts honoring Christ. In the extraordinary form, as happens with all Sundays whose are replaced by those of important feasts, the prayers of the Sunday on which the celebration of the occurs are used on the ferias (weekdays) of the following week. The Sunday is thus not totally omitted. In 2020, the Solemnity day falls on October 25 for those using the former calendar.
