Head Coach Louis Bennett 15th Year | Yorkshire, England | Crewe & Alsager College ‘82 The spring 2021 season marks the 15th for Louis Bennett as head men’s soccer coach at Marquette University and his 25th head coaching season overall.

Bennett boasts a long history of success, leading Milwaukee (1996-2005) and Marquette (2006-present) to a combined seven league championships, six league tournament titles and seven NCAA tournament appearances - advancing past the first round on five occa- sions, including a Sweet 16 appearance with the Golden Eagles in 2013.

Through the 2019 season, Bennett has a career record of 226-190-4 over 24 seasons, including a 91-126-37 mark in 14 seasons with Marquette. His 135 career victories at Milwaukee are the most in school history, while he currently ranks third in Marquette laurels. He has earned six League Coach of the Year honors, including five with Milwaukee and most recently in 2011 at Marquette.

In the team’s 2018 season, Bennett led MU to a BIG EAST tournament runner-up finish as the Golden Eagles fell one game short of clinching the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. MU made a thrilling postseason push, defeating both Xavier (quarterfinals) and No. 17 Creighton (semifinals) in PK’s before falling in the championship to No. 19 Georgetown.

For the first time in program history, Bennett had four players garner first or second team all-conference honors in 2018. Senior goalkeeper Luis Barraza joined junior midfielder Luka Prpa and junior defender Patrick Seagrist on the All-BIG EAST first team while junior forward Connor Alba earned second team honors. First-year forward Lukas Sunesson, who hails from Taby, Sweden, became Bennett’s 10th player in team history to be named to the BIG EAST All-Freshman team.

Luis Barraza was named the BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year in 2018 after a season that saw him finish the season ranked in the nation’s top-10 in save percentage (.830) and saves per game (5.20).

A native of Great Britain, Bennett has over 30 years of experience as a player and coach. He played collegiate soccer at Crewe & Alsager College in England, helping win the British Colleges National Championship in 1982. He was also honored as a Great Britain Colleges International Player for three years. Bennett played profession- al soccer for seven years in the U.S., including three seasons with the Milwaukee Wave of the NPSL (1985-87) and he has made “The Good City” his home ever since. Coach Bennett enters his 15th season at MU in ‘21. After bringing his 2018 team to the BIG EAST Bennett holds bachelor’s degrees in education with a minor in special education and coaching licenses with Championship game, he’s looking to bring the English FA, US NSCCA and USSF organizations. He’s married to the former Julie Harper of Yorkshire, England. MARQUEZ MAKES HIS MARK: • Christian Marquez, a rising sophomore out of Illinois, was one of just two true freshman to see time last year. He started in eight of the 17 games his played in. He scored his first goal of the season on Sept. 24 at Wisconsin. The goal, which put MU up 1-0 on UW, ended up being the game-winner. • He followed it up with another game-winner, this time at BIG EAST foe Xavier, in a 2-1 win on Sept. 27. On Sept. 30, he was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week for his performances. Marquez scored his third and final goal of the year and added an assist in a 6-1 win over Green Bay. He tallied the team’s lone assist on Soto’s game-winning goal against Loyola Chicago to begin the spring 2021 season. He has two assists on the year.

SOTO MAKING A STATEMENT AS A FRESHMAN: • A freshman from Tomball, Texas, striker Beto Soto has taken the BIG EAST by storm in 2021. He’s scored two goals in six games thus far, both of which were eventual game-winning goals. • His first one came in the season opener against Loyola Chicago as he scored the Golden Goal to help MU win 1-0 in OT. His second was a free kick that curled inside the right post to put MU up 2-1 on March 6 at DePaul. He’s started in every game and is second on the team with 11 SOG.

SUNESSON MAKING A NAME FOR HIMSELF IN 2021: • A junior from Taby, Sweden, Lukas Sunesson is Marquette’s most productive returning scorer in 2021. In 2018 he had five goals, which put him second on the team. His performance as a freshman earned him a spot on the BIG EAST All-Freshman team and he made an appearance on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll. • Last year, he played in all 18 games and tied for second on the team with three goals to go along with one assist. This spring he has huge goals he wants to accomplish and he’s well on his way to hitting them. • Sunesson got on the board with his first goal of 2021 after a one-touch goal off a cross from Mirsberger sealed MU’s victory over NIU on Feb. 7. He scored his team-leading second goal of the year in the Feb. 20 loss to Creighton. He then went on two net a brace in a 3-1 win at DePaul. • The junior added to his total with his team-leading fifth marker of the year to open the scoring in a 2-1 win over Xavier.

POSARELLI PUTS HIMSELF IN POSITION TO SUCCEED: • A former transfer from Montana State, Oliver Posarelli played a key role on the backline for MU in 2018, starting 15 of the 19 games he played in. He also earned BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll accolades for his stellar defensive efforts in a shutout win over St. John’s. • 2019 was a different story, however, as Oliver played in just one game because of injury before taking a medical redshirt. He’s finally back healthy this spring, much to the delight of his teammates and coaching staff. • “Posa” as his teammates call him, has proved his value thus far, helping keep four clean sheets and win five of its seven games. He was named to TopDrawerSoccer’s Team of the Week on Feb. 15 for his performance last weekend.

MIRS, SALMERON AND WEGNER GAINING GROUND: • Sophomore Alex Mirsberger and juniors Alan Salmeron and Zak Wegner have been key pieces on the defense and midfield throughout their careers. Mirsberger has started in every game this year while Salmeron and Wegs have started six games each. • Mirsberger and Salmeron each got credited for an assist on Sunesson’s game-winning goal to beat Northern Illinois on Feb. 7. It was Salmeron’s first careeer point. Mirs notched his team-leading second assist while Wegs tallied his first of the season in a 2-1 win over Xavier.

CHANDLER HALLWOOD STANDING OUT AT KEEPER: Sophomore keeper Chandler Hallwood has made his mark in his first five games at MU. The Gannon University transfer is 4-1 with 32 saves an .889 save percentage and a 0.59 goals allowed average. He was named BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week on Feb. 15. He’s helped keep four clean sheets. He saved a career-high seven shots on Feb. 20 against Creighton. Although he gave up two goals, his seven saves still helped him earn BIG EAST Honor Roll accolades. Hallwood earned his third weekly honor from the league this week. He tied a career-high with seven saves in a 0-0 draw at Butler, keeping his fourth clean sheet of the year. Hallwood tied his career-best with seven saves against Xavier (3/17).

BENNETT’S OVERTIME SUCCESS: In the past 12 overtime games, Marquette is 7-2-3. All-time, the Golden Eagles are 18-15-33 in overtime under Coach B.
