This is reflected in Uppsala, Sweden, and that the tentative dates will be not only in the composition of the Corrmittee itself, but August 14-20, 1978. also in the decision of the Executive Committee to establish an Advisory Committee to the Program Committee. This much broader Advisory Committee which will have over 20 members is still being constituted; the names of its members will be published in a later issue of this Newsletter. The principal work of the Program Committee consisted in defining more precisely the theme of the Congress, within the terms of reference set by the Executive Committee; considering possible plenary sessions and working groups associated with them; suggesting names of chairmen/ chairwomen and rapporteurs for these meetings; proposing symposia on súbjects not entirely covered by the main theme, but requested by various members and member associa- tions; and considering ways of organizing the joint meeting of Research Committees that was suggested by the Research Council and approved by the Executive Committee.

In addition, the Program Committee examined the problems of the Congress timetable, but decided to leave the formulation of a preliminary timetable to the Secretariat in consultation with the President, and also discussed briefly some matters concerning the local arrangements for the Congress.
