By Ben Kreshtool The holiday of Purim is one of our more interesting holidays. The miracle that occurs in the megillah happens outside the Land of , the megillah itself does not directly contain the name of God, and on Purim we do not recite hallel. Let us compare that to Chanukah where the Book of Maccabees did not even make it into the canon of our Scriptures, the miracle or miracles did occur in the Land of Israel and we do recite a full hallel on all 8 days of Chanukah. I have always found it interesting that the Book of Maccabees did not become part of our Bible. The first Book of Maccabees is a distinctly Jewish set of writings originally in Hebrew, that describe the miracle of a victory over a vastly superior fighting force and the rededication of our most sacred space, the Temple in Jerusalem. The reason often given for the exclusion of the Book of Maccabees is that the Rabbis did not want to focus attention on a violent military victory, but I find that to be a weak argument, especially considering the end of Megillat Esther. Purim however is a holiday of secrets and not all is as it seems. If you look closely at the megillah it will unlock its mysteries and share with you a book deeply connected to the Torah and the Jewish people. I will share just a few examples. In the first chapter verse 6, the letterchet is enlarged. Tradition teaches us that this symbolizes the stolen 8 garments of the High Priest that Achashverosh was wearing at his party. The Midrash also tells us that the drinking vessels referred to in verse 7 were golden vessels from the Temple, which is why the melody for the trope is changed to the sad melody of Megillat Eicha which we read on Tisha B’Av. In chapter 5:4, we have a verse detailing Esther’s invitation to the King and Haman to her banquet. However, if we look closely at the first letters of some of the words, we see revealed the Name of God. Purim is a holiday of mysteries and masks, a holiday where the goal is to embrace topsy-turvy and upside-down. But look closely and you’ll see that the megillah wants us to discover its secrets. When the masks come off, what’s left is the very core of our being. Purim is a fun holiday but also a serious one. It is a holiday where we are obligated to perform mitzvot and share with others. I hope you will join us here at Beth El to hear the megillah, eat some hamentashen, and try your hand at some karaoke! Chag Sameach!

"Look closely and you’ll see that the megillah wants us to discover its secrets. When the masks come off, what’s left is the very core of our being."

The Voice of Beth El Congregation 17 School News HEBREW SCHOOL IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD The Hebrew School in Your Neighborhood Program, Berman-Lipavsky Religious School’s satellite program is in the midst of another strong year as approximately 50 students are being educated among our four locations-Hunt Valley, Roland Park, Federal Hill and Howard County. The Neighborhood Schools started in the mid 90’s at Roland Park, the first site. It was difficult to find teachers to teach off-campus, therefore Dr. Bor together with former Assistant Principal, Tzahi Posner taught the class. Dr. Bor remembers, “It was a wonderful experience to interact with the students and their parents at Roland Park. Our goal again was to reach students and their families and help them overcome any difficulty they faced in providing a Jewish education for their children.” Roland Park continues to be a vibrant satellite school; this year we expanded the program to offer three, age-appropriate classes, each with its own teacher. There are many components to the Hebrew School in Your Neighborhood Program that make it a unique and unparalleled program in the Baltimore area. The goals of the program are to be convenient, educational and engaging for students and families. Beth El is proactive in providing a program that meets families where they are; the neighborhood schools are offered in areas that would otherwise be challenging for families to commute to Beth El’s main campus in Pikesville. Each school meets during the week, directly after school. At two of our locations, the teachers pick the students up from school and walk them to the satellite location. The curriculum at the neighborhood schools is hands-on and creative, offering multi-dimensional learning strategies such as iPads and screens, group learning with students of varying ages, and outside resources in the community. Each teacher provides programming that is tailored to the needs of their unique group of students. In Howard County, students have two periods, one where they learn Hebrew based on their level with Morah Ellen and then they switch to participate in Judaic learning with Morah Lisa. In Federal Hill, Morah Rachel focuses on hands- on learning with her students; they wrote, practiced and presented a Hanukkah play for the families as part of their Hanukkah celebration. At Roland Park, a tutor is on site to Shabbat Services offer one-on-one B’nai Mitzvah tutoring sessions as there are several students who are preparing for their Bar/Bat Mitzvah. for Children This year we have utilized many resources in the community that have been integrated into the curriculum.
