Travelling by train can be a great experience for children as part of their school trip, making it a real day to remember. The information in this pack explains how to book group travel for schools and highlights attractions along the route.

School groups of 10 or more, travelling by train between Nottingham, Mansfield and Worksop can benefit from a 26% discount on standard rail fares - see below for some sample fares between stations.

2 1. Mr Straw's House Mr Straw's House offers a glimpse into a house which resisted the advances of modern technology. Having been lived in until 1990, but not renovated since the 1920s, the house offers a look into a domestic house which still contains all of its contents. Covering 80 years, we are able to touch upon a variety of subjects and historical eras.

School Group Information Our educational activities are still being developed. Schools visiting the house will be able to have a guided tour of the fascinating home with original interior from 1923. Maximum group size is 25, due to limited space.

National Curriculum Subjects and Age Range/ Key Stage Activities cover a variety of themes including: My House, World War 2, Collecting, Family Tree, Reuse/ recycle.

How to Get There from Worksop Station Mr Straw's House is a 10 minute walk from Worksop station. On request, groups can be met off the train at Worksop Station. On leaving the station, turn left up the hill (Carlton Road), walk to the traffic lights and veer right onto Blyth Road. Blyth Grove is the second road on your right. Look for the white signs.

3 2. . Derbyshire Environmental Studies Service Making your educational visits easier, we are able to provide our Education Visits Leaders and equipment to provide tailor made fieldwork in a location and environment of your choice.

School Group Information We can provide a day of fieldwork tailor made to the needs of your class. Led and delivered on a site or location of your choosing and linked to a range of curriculum areas. It could involve: • Art and architecture. • Mapping land use. • Traffic and transport surveys. • Map and compass work. • Studying the built heritage and history of a specific site. • Questionnaires with the public. • Habitat or wildlife work. • A river or stream study. • Data collection, recording and interpretation.

Price Information A tailor made day led by one of our Education Visits Leaders costs £250 and includes a pre-meeting with the class teacher, a risk assessment of activities, planning, preparation and pre-visit to the locality, all resources to be used on the day which you keep for your own use and delivery of the day programme of activities. This is based on a class size of 30 pupils. If you require additional 'repeats' of the tailor made programme this is charged at £4.25 per pupil per day or £4.00 per pupil per day if booked a term in advance. Teachers and accompanying adults are free. There may be an additional 'room hire' charge if an indoor area is required for your pupils at a specific site.

4 3. Creswell Crags Museum and Visitor Centre Creswell Crags is a limestone gorge honeycombed with caves. Stone tools and remains of animals found in the caves are displayed in the exhibition providing evidence for a fascinating story of life during the last Ice Age. Further evidence came to light in 2003 with the discovery of Britain's only known Ice Age rock art.

School Group Information School groups can spend the day learning about Ice Age life and the Creswell Crags site. There are dedicated education rooms with an interactive whiteboard with provision for indoor and outdoor activities. Our staff will do all they can to tailor a visit to your needs and meet any requirements or special learning outcomes you may have.

National Curriculum Subjects and Age Range/ Key Stage Subjects covered History, Geography, Science, Art, Design and Technology, also covers aspects of Literacy and Numeracy.

There are a range of educational activities that are suitable for Key Stage 1, Key Stage 2, Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 groups. (On the menu of activities it is stated which activity is suitable for which Key Stage.)

Price Information For two museum- led activities it is £4 per child for primary groups. It is £5.50 per child for secondary groups. There is no cost for adults at 1:5 for primary and 1:10 for secondary.

How to Get There from Creswell Station Creswell Crags is a 30 minute walk from Creswell station.

Exit the station down the approach road and turn left onto Elmton Road. Continue along Elmton Road crossing over at the pedestrian crossing, continue in the same direction along Elmton Road, turning right onto Mansfield Road (A616).

Follow Mansfield Road and then turn left at the mini roundabout onto Crags Road (B6042). Cross over and follow the footway round to the right onto the side road, signed Crags Cottage to walk up through the gorge and into Creswell Crags. Follow the path through the gorge to reach the Visitor Centre.

Willow Tree Family Farm Willow Tree Family farm has been designed entirely with children in mind offering a range of educational opportunities for local schools, groups and clubs to come and learn about farm animals and the outdoor environment, so why not give the children an unforgettable learning experience. The farm is situated in acres of countryside on the outskirts of Shirebrook with animals and activities around every corner.

School Group Information Why not get up close and personal with all our animals with trained staff. You will find our curriculum- based Education Programmes are flexible, interactive and lots of fun! No matter how big or small your group is we will make your day one to remember and have the children talking for weeks.

How to Get There from Shirebrook Station Willow Tree Family Farm is less than 5 minutes walk from Shirebrook Station.

Turn left out of the station following the signs towards the town centre. Turn right at the mini roundabout onto Langwith Road. Willow Tree Family Farm is situated on the right hand side of Langwith Road approximately 100m from the mini roundabout.

A staff member will meet you and guide you from the railway station.

6 5. Mansfield Museum Mansfield Museum is a bright, general museum whose emphasis on catering for children was recognised in 2011 when it won the prestigious Family-Friendly Museum Award for the entire UK.

School Group Information The Museum offers 15 all-day Education Sessions. These lively, hands-on affairs, incorporating a range of learning styles, are taught by our experienced Education Officer. All equipment and materials are included, as is exclusive use of our dedicated classroom.

National Curriculum Subjects and Age Range/ Key Stage Our Education Sessions are aimed at Reception - Year 6. History topics include Tudor Life and Leisure; Pop culture 1948 - the present; Dickens and the Victorian Age; World War 2 Evacuees; History of Toys and Games; History of the Seaside; the story of writing and printing; the story of Mansfield's industry.

A simple Art Day looks at buildings and basic architecture. Animal Habitat and Sustainability/re-cycling have their own sessions. In others, children can try their hand at Suspense Writing; learn what goes into a Fairy Tale; construct their own mini-museum. A seasonal special investigates the origins of Christmas traditions.

How to Get There from Mansfield Station Mansfield Museum is a 10 minute walk from Mansfield Station.

Trains from Nottingham arrive on Platform 1. From here, use the underpass under the railway and turn left. Trains from Worksop arrive on Platform 2. From here, walk down the ramp towards the underpass and continue straight on. This path goes between the railway line and Sports Direct.

Follow the path down through the landscaped area to the pedestrian crossing. Use the crossings to the far side of Albert Street (by the row of shops) and turn left under the arch of the railway bridge. Bear right onto Market Street and into the Market Place. Keep to the right hand side of the Market Place heading towards the sculpture of large stone balls. Go straight on after the sculpture up pedestrianised Leeming Street.

At the brow of the hill cross Toothill Lane and continue along Leeming Street. Mansfield Museum is located a short distance along on the right next to the Palace Theatre.

7 6. Galleries of Justice, Nottingham National Centre for Citizenship and the Law (NCCL) - education provider for the Galleries of Justice Museum. We are a child friendly museum of Crime and Punishment, home to the Villainous Sheriff of Nottingham and the perfect venue to come and discover Nottingham's horrible history. Great for all ages: early years to higher education groups.

School Group Information We deliver interactive and engaging educational activities to pupils of all ages, including Mock Trials, courtroom workshops, performance led and interactive tours and topical debates.

National Curriculum Subjects and Age Range/ Key Stage Our educational activities have key links to the curriculum including History, Citizenship, English, PSHE, Law, Drama and much more! They also cover key topics studied in the classroom including: Victorians, World War 2, Tudors, Leisure & Tourism and GCSE Crime & Punishment. How to Get There from Nottingham Train Station The Galleries of Justice Museum is a 10 minute walk from Nottingham Train station.

Leave Nottingham Train Station and head towards the Shopping Centre. Walk through the Broadmarsh Centre and turn right just before the glass exit doors, go up the escalators onto the top floor and continue forward until you reach Wimpy on the corner. Turn left at Wimpy and go up the escalators next to the City of caves which will bring you outside.

Turn right and cross over the road with the tram tracks and you will have LaTasca Spanish Restaurant in front of you and Nottingham Contemporary on the right. Walk up the road in between these two buildings and we are located on the right hand side.

8 7. Nottingham Castle Museum 8. Brewhouse Yard Museum School Group Information Nottingham Castle Museum - Nottingham Castle Museum offers history and art based sessions. The Castle collections include fine and contemporary art, decorative arts and textiles, a family gallery intended for children up to eight years old, and a Robin Hood children's gallery.

Brewhouse Yard Museum - Brewhouse Yard Museum is a social history museum and offers history based sessions. A Victorian schoolroom, Discovering Toys gallery, parlour, bedroom, grocers shop and kitchen, all complete with original objects show glimpses of times past.

How to Get There from The Brewhouse Yard Museum is 10 minutes and Castle Museum 15 minutes from Nottingham train station on foot. Turn right out of the station and follow the tourist information signs. It is possible to walk along the canal side for part of the journey. The route crosses some busy roads.

Nottingham Contemporary Nottingham Contemporary, in Nottingham's historic lace market is one of the largest contemporary art spaces in the UK, with four galleries, an auditorium, an education studio, a study centre, a café-bar and a shop. It is one of the best connected art centres in the UK and you can get to it from all major transport routes. It is only a quick stroll up the hill from Nottingham train station.

10 10. City of Caves City of Caves, Upper level, Broadmarsh Centre, Nottingham Explore original sandstone caves beneath the streets of Nottingham with the help of Archie or Annie the Archaeologists.

School Group Information School groups can investigate imaginary creatures who may have lived in the caves as well as the real people who did. We also offer actor led tours for Secondary school and further and higher education students.
