The most significant outcome of this work was the identification of several linear ditches on similar alignments to those of the former part of the Iron Age boundary system that was identified during excavations and watching briefs to the east of Gonalston Lane. None of these yielded datable finds but their spatial relationship to the Iron Age linear boundaries suggested an Iron Age date. Scattered pits were also recorded to the south of the burnt mound. Most of these remains were undated, but the discovery of Late Bronze Age or Iron Age sherds in one feature suggested that a proportion at least may have related to the phase of dispersed and unenclosed settlements that excavations at Gonalston and elsewhere have shown characterised Gonalston. A subsequent excavation concentrated on an area of Iron Age activity. Area 1 contained a spread of burnt flints, and several pits also contained burnt material. The largest of these pits cut through an Iron Age ditch. This also yielded burn material and may originally have formed part of an Iron Age field system. Area 2 revealed a substantial ditch on the same alignment as that in Area 1, suggesting it was also part of the same field system. Near this ditch was an enclosure and a ring ditch, both of which contained numerous pits and post holes with Iron Age pottery indicative of domestic settlement. A subsequent watching brief on the Phase 11 later in 2005 found no further significant remains. [Au(abr)]
