FUTURE WORLD(S): A Critique of Disney's EPCOT and Creating a Futuristic Curriculum by ALAN BOWERS (Under the Direction of Daniel Chapman) ABSTRACT In my dissertation inquiry, I explore the need for utopian based curriculum which was inspired by Walt Disney’s EPCOT Center. Theoretically building upon such works regarding utopian visons (Bregman, 2017, e.g., Claeys 2011;) and Disney studies (Garlen and Sandlin, 2016; Fjellman, 1992), this work combines historiography and speculative essays as its methodologies. In addition, this project explores how schools must do the hard work of working toward building a better future (Chomsky and Foucault, 1971). Through tracing the evolution of EPCOT as an idea for a community that would “always be in the state of becoming” to EPCOT Center as an inspirational theme park, this work contends that those ideas contain possibilities for how to interject utopian thought in schooling. -

A NOTE ABOUT THE AUTHOR Ray Bradbury has published some twenty-seven books—novels, stories, plays, essays, and poems—since his first story appeared when he was twenty years old. He began writing for the movies in 1952—with the script for his own Beast from 20,000 Fathoms. The next year he wrote the screenplays for It Came from Outer Space and Moby Dick. And in 1961 he wrote Orson Welles's narration for King of Kings. Films have been made of his "The Picasso Summer," The Illustrated Man, Fahrenheit 451, The Mar- tian Chronicles, and Something Wicked This Way Comes, and the short animated film Icarus Montgolfier Wright, based on his story of the history of flight, was nominated for an Academy Award. Since 1985 he has adapted his stories for "The Ray Bradbury Theater" on USA Cable television. By writing a draft in a day I have a story with a skin around it.” Ray Bradbury’s creative coda originated long before he fashioned this concise version of it for his December 1964 Show magazine interview. His daily writing habit had become a quotidian fever by the early 1940s, and he soon learned to avoid interruptions from any other voices—including his own rational judgments. Each day became a race between subconscious inspiration and the stifling effects of his own self-conscious thoughts—the more logical thought patterns that he desperately tried to hold at bay during the few hours it would take him to complete an initial draft. Bradbury was convinced that the magic would dissolve away if he failed to carry through on a story idea or an opening page at first sitting, and it’s not surprising that his Show interview coda came with a cautionary corollary: “If one waits overnight to finish a story, quite often the texture one gets the next day is different. -

Beyond Philology No. 14/3, 2017 ISSN 1732-1220, eISSN 2451-1498 The world of childhood in Ray Bradbury’s The Illustrated Man KAROL CHOJNOWSKI Received 3.04.2017, accepted 21.09.2017. Abstract This article is devoted to an analysis of the motif of childhood in The Illustrated Man, a collection of short stories by Ray Bradbury. The particular focus is on the initial story, “The Veldt,” and the last two stories, “Zero Hour” and “The Rocket.” The article interprets imagina- tion as a distinguishing feature of children’s world, as opposed to the world of adults, characterised by logic and lack of imagination. This difference, the article claims, results in a clash of the two worlds. The article also analyses Bradbury’s negative view of technology ex- pressed in the stories, with its addictive and destructive potential, as well as technology’s relationship to imagination. Another object of analysis is the ways Bradbury suggests to reconcile the worlds of children and adults and to avoid technology’s pernicious effects. The article also aims to analyse the way in which the intertextual frame- work contributes to these themes and to interpret the meaning of the arrangement of the stories within the volume. Technological and Gender Progress in Ray Bradbury’s Postwar Speculative Fiction Lisa Michelle Paper University of Florida April 2016 Paper 1 Technological and Gender Progress in Ray Bradbury’s Postwar Speculative Fiction “I often use the metaphor of Perseus and the head of Medusa when I speak of science fiction. Instead of looking into the face of truth, you look over your shoulder into the bronze surface of a reflecting shield. Then you reach back with your sword and cut off the head of Medusa. Science fiction pretends to look into the future but it’s really looking at a reflection of what is already in front of us” (Weller). These were the words of the American author Ray Bradbury in an interview from The Paris Review recorded in the 1970s. Bradbury’s insights brilliantly illuminate the art of exploring through science and speculative fiction larger issues in society.1 Science fiction has been described as the “literature of cognitive estrangement” by scholar and critic Darko Suvin. Suvin goes on to argue that science fiction is a genre “whose necessary and sufficient conditions are the presence and interaction of estrangement and cognition, and whose main formal device is an imaginative framework alternative to the author's empirical environment” (Suvin). Cognitive estrangement is thus the ability, as Bradbury puts it, to “attack the recent past” and reveal “the present” by pretending you’re “writing about the future” (“About”). I return to the subject now, not because the eduTcation world has suffered from my absence, but because I have. I began my career as an elementary school teacher and have not for a single moment abandoned the idea that many of our most vexing and painful social problems could be ameliorated if we knew how to school our young. You may conclude from this that I am a romantic, but not, I think, a fool. I know that education is not the same thing as schooling, and that, in fact, not much of our education takes place in school. Schooling may be a subversive or a conserving activity, but it is certainly a circumscribed one. It has a late beginning and an early end and in between it pauses for summer vacations and holidays, and generously excuses us when we are ill. To the young, schooling seems relentless, but we know it is not. What is relentless is our education, which, for good or ill, gives us no rest. That is why poverty is a great educator. -

Analysis: "I Sing the Body Electric" is a very atypical episode of The Twilight Zone. It is the only episode of the series that was written by Ray Bradbury, which may account for some of the differences seen in the story. This is the only episode during the third season, which features a narrative from Rod Serling in the middle of the episode. It still had the traditional beginning and ending narrative seen in all The Twilight Zone episodes, but the addition of the middle narrative was unique to this episode. This was not the only structural difference featured in this episode. The typical twist ending is not present. There is still a a turning point in the episode, but it is when Anne finally grows to accept Grandma into her life. Normally, the turning point or twist in a The Twilight Zone episode is when we discover the truth behind what is happening and when we discover that what seemed to be the truth was actually just a smoke screen. "I Sing the Body Electric" features some very traditional aspects of science fiction. It is about robots, which was not only one of the most common themes used by The Twilight Zone writers, but in science fiction literature in general.
