54 VI LIVESTOCK

The information on Livestock was collected from Veterinary Division of the Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Kwara State. However, table 46 which shows estimated animal population and slaughtered figures was based on rural economic sample survey by Federal Office of Statistics 1967 and 1968. These figures should be used with caution. The data on livestock population from Natural Resources was an estimated figure and the figure for cattle especially is far below the real number because it was the figure given during the enumeration of cattle for cattle Tax. Low figure was given for fear of Taxation. The slaughtered figures are recorded' number of animals slaughtered in abbatojrs and slaughter slabs in the state.

120 XIII PRICES

Data on Prices were extracted from Federal Office of Statistics monthly publication entitled " Retail Prices and Con¬ sumer Price Indices in Urban centres in Nigeria. " Only Uorin town was covered by the Federal Office.

Table 105 shows the consumer prices indices for lower income group in Ilorin in 1970 and 1971. The Indices were compiled with 1957 and 1960 as base years respectively.

Efforts are being made to include prices of other towns in the state in future publications.

124 XIV MISCELLANEOUS

Unlike in the former publication the data grouped together to form this section are on water supply, Crime and Justice and Unemployment registration.

The table on water supply shows that the Daily out-put of almost all the water works in the State increased in 1972/73 compared with the former years.

The tables on crime shows that most of the cases tried in the State were tried in area courts and only few cases were tried in magistrates and high courts. Also some of the tables show that sentences imposed on conviction of criminals are greater in number in Area courts than in magistrate and High courts. Moreover the table on Unemployment registration was related to those who cared to register with the Labour Office. The table does not therefore show the true unemployment position in the State.
