Basscatch 2020 – Native Ranges for Black Bass and Sub-species (updated 09-JUN-2020)

Note: This document may occasionally be updated to reflect changes to the scientific naming classifications and information related to the native range for the individual species or sub-species of (Black Bass).

Native Ranges:

1. M. cahabae (Cahaba Bass) • Cahaba River System of the Mobile Basin in central Alabama (Piedmont region) 2. M. cataractae a. M. sp. cf. cataractae (Altamaha Bass) • Ocmulgee, Oconee, and Ogeechee river basins in Georgia. b. M. sp. cf. cataractae (Bartram's Bass) • Savannah river basin in Georgia. c. M. cataractae () • Apalachicola River drainage of Alabama, and Georgia (Williams and Burgess 1999). [Note: Declared an endangered species in Alabama and cannot be targeted. Alabama waters are excluded from submission to Basscatch.] • Georgia Wildlife lists native range as the Chattahoochee and Flint River basins. Populations in the Ocmulgee River were introduced and are not eligible for Basscatch from those waters. 3. M. chattahoochae (Chattahoochee Bass) • Chattahoochee River system (Alabama, Florida and Georgia). 4. M. coosae (Redeye Bass) • Coosa River system of Alabama and Georgia. Populations in the Martin’s Fork of the Cumberland River, Harlan County, Kentucky and the Tennessee River basin were introduced and are not eligible for Basscatch from those waters. 5. M. dolomieu a. M. dolomieu dolomieu (Northern Smallmouth Bass) • St. Lawrence and Great Lakes, Hudson Bay (Red River), and Mississippi River basins from southern Quebec to North Dakota and south to northern Alabama and eastern Oklahoma; Atlantic and Gulf slope drainages from Virginia to central Texas (Page and Burr 1991). b. M. dolomieu velox (Neosho Smallmouth Bass) • Portions of Missouri, Arkansas, Kansas and Oklahoma. - Ozark Highlands and Boston Mountains ecoregions (Arkansas)

c. M. sp. cf. dolomieu velox (Ouachita Smallmouth Bass) • Little and Ouachita river drainages of the Ouachita Highlands (Arkansas and Oklahoma) 6. M. henshalli (Alabama Bass) • Mobile Bay basin in Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia (Page and Burr 2011). 7. M. notius (Suwannee Bass) • Native in the Suwannee and drainages (Florida and Georgia). Introduced to the Santa Fe, Ichetucknee, St. Marks, Aucilla and Wacissa systems and are not eligible for Basscatch from those waters. 8. M. punctulatus a. M. sp. cf. punctulatus (Choctaw Bass) [provisional as M. haiaka] • Upper panhandle of Florida and coastal river systems in southeastern Alabama – Populations reported in the Blackwater River; Chipola River; Choctawhatchee River; Escambia River; Perdido River and Yellow River. b. M. punctulatus (Spotted Bass) • Mississippi River basin from southern Ohio and West Virginia to southeastern Kansas, and south to the Gulf; Gulf Slope drainages from the Chattahoochee River, Georgia (where possibly introduced), to the Guadalupe River, Texas (Page and Burr 1991). 9. M. salmoides a. M. sp. cf. salmoides (Cuatro Ciénegas Bass) • Cuatro Ciénegas ecosystem in Coahuila, Mexico b. M. salmoides floridanus (Florida Bass) • Florida Largemouth Bass are native to peninsular Florida. The northern extent of its native range reaches to the mouth of the St. Johns River, and west to, but not including, the (Robins et al. 2018). Largemouth Bass in northern Florida are often intergrades with intermediate characteristics of both subspecies. This zone of integration spans from the Choctawhatchee River in the panhandle to the St. Mary’s River drainage on the Atlantic slope of Florida (Page and Burr 2011; Robins et al. 2018). c. M. salmoides salmoides (Largemouth Bass) • Northern Largemouth Bass are native to the St. Lawrence and Great Lakes, Hudson Bay (Red River), and Mississippi River basins from southern Quebec to Minnesota and south to the Gulf. Its native range also encompasses the Atlantic Slope drainages from North Carolina to the Suwannee River in Florida, and the Gulf Slope drainages reaching west from northern Florida into northern Mexico (Page and Burr 2011) 10. M. tallapoosae (Tallapoosa Bass) • Tallapoosa River system inn Georgia and Alabama 11. M. treculii (Guadalupe Bass) • Edwards Plateau in the Brazos, Colorado, Guadalupe, and San Antonio river drainages, Texas (Page and Burr 1991). 12. M. warriorensis (Warrior Bass) • Black Warrior River system in Alabama
