I960 Abstract

This bibliography lists 154 theses on the post- Precambrian geology of Ontario completed before July 1959. The geology departments of four universities in were visited and letters were sent to 2? other Canadian and United States universities. Additional titles were obtained from published sources. Bibliography of Theses on Ontario Geology (Cambrian to Quaternary inclusive) Compiled by P. F. Karrow

Introduction

The purpose of this bibliography is to provide a ready reference to the results of some of the research carried out in geology at universities. Some of the work, particularly for the more advanced degrees, has appeared in print elsewhere. However, much of it is buried in university libraries and few people are aware of its existence. Students and professional geologists alike should be aware of research already completed so that time and money will not be need lessly wasted in duplicated effort. It is expected that the number of theses completed each year will increase rapidly as new departments of geology are established and older ones are enlarged during the current expansion in Ontario universities. This bibliography lists 154 theses on the post- Precambrian geology of Ontario completed before July 1959. Of these, 53 (34#) are concerned with Quaternary geology. Bachelor ! s theses account for 56 (36^), Master T s theses 64 (42^), and doctorate theses 34 (22^). A considerable number (43 or 26^) are theses completed at universities located in the United States. The bibliography was compiled from several sources. The geology departments of four universities in southern - 2 - Ontario were visited and letters were sent to 27 other Canadian and United States universities. Secondary sources which provided additional titles were the "Bibliography of theses written for advanced degrees in geology and related sciences at universities and colleges in the United States and Canada through 1957" by John and Halka Chronic (Pruett Press, Boulder, Colo.), and thesis abstracts which have appeared in the Canadian Mining Journal since March 1953 on behalf of the National Advisory Committee on Research in the Geological Sciences. The writer wishes to acknowledge with thanks the cooperation of all those geology departments which contributed to this work. It would be appreciated if errors and omissions were brought to the attention of the compiler of this bibliography. Notification of new thesis titles would also be appreciated. Usually, the theses may be consulted at the library of the geology department concerned or may be borrowed through inter-library loan. In some cases, copies may be obtained on microfilm.
