CELEBRATING FORTY YEARS of FILMS WORTH TALKING ABOUT 39 Years, 2 Months, and Counting…
5 JAN 18 1 FEB 18 1 | 5 JAN 18 - 1 FEB 18 88 LOTHIAN ROAD | FILMHOUSECinema.COM CELEBRATING FORTY YEARS OF FILMS WORTH TALKING ABOUT 39 Years, 2 Months, and counting… As you’ll spot deep within this programme (and hinted at on the front cover) January 2018 sees the start of a series of films that lead up to celebrations in October marking the 40th birthday of Filmhouse as a public cinema on Lothian Road. We’ve chosen to screen a film from every year we’ve been bringing the very best cinema to the good people of Edinburgh, and while it is tremendous fun looking back through the history of what has shown here, it was quite an undertaking going through all the old programmes and choosing what to show, and a bit of a personal journey for me as one who started coming here as a customer in the mid-80s (I know, I must have started very young...). At that time, I’d no idea that Filmhouse had only been in existence for less than 10 years – it seemed like such an established, essential institution and impossible to imagine it not existing in a city such as Edinburgh. My only hope is that the cinema is as important today as I felt it was then, and that the giants on whose shoulders we currently stand feel we’re worthy of their legacy. I hope you can join us for at least some of the screenings on this trip down memory lane... And now, back to the now. -

Patrice Chéreau. Cineasta Del Corpo Retrospettiva

CELEBRATING FORTY YEARS of FILMS WORTH TALKING ABOUT I Love the August Festivals, Though Not As Much As I Love Cinema
3 AUG 18 6 SEP 18 1 | 3 AUG 18 - 6 SEP 18 88 LOTHIAN ROAD | FILMHOUSECinema.COM CELEBRATING FORTY YEARS OF FILMS WORTH TALKING ABOUT I love the August festivals, though not as much as I love cinema. You? I usually take the opportunity when writing this column every August to grumble about how distracted potential cinema-goers appear to be by the world’s largest arts festival that takes place in our glorious (a word which currently also describes the weather!) city every year, but this year I’m seeing it as nothing more than a challenge. A challenge, dear reader, which I feel we have risen to in impressive style with a stunning array of great cinema, much of which is, as it happens, of a ‘one-off’ nature and will likely not come around again any time soon… That sounds like I’m trying to dragoon you into coming to the cinema in August (instead of going to the Tattoo, perhaps?), and conceivably I am, but try not to see it that way… Rather, I simply wouldn’t want you to miss out on any of the must-see cinema experiences contained within these pages. In any case, cinema is surely the best of all the art forms wouldn’t you say, as well as being one of the cheaper days/nights out? Beyond the form itself, with cinema, you rarely have to worry about not liking a film and it being apparent to the people who made it, because they’re generally not there in the room. -
Interview: Francesco Vezzoli
Financial Times: 'Antidotes to Absurdity', by Rachel Spence, August 28th 2015 Interview: Francesco Vezzoli The Italian artist and film-maker on his ‘obsession’ with truth and the connection between sexuality, art and capitalism Generally, videos are a cross that art-lovers have to bear. Most are too long and pretentious, made by practitioners who would never have survived were they obliged to use a less generous medium such as paint or marble. So it was with a heavy heart that I pushed open the curtain that shielded Francesco Vezzoli’s film at the 2005 Venice Biennale. Six minutes later, I was reeling. For “Trailer for a Remake of Gore Vidal’s ‘Caligula’ ” was a hilarious riff on Bob Guccione’s 1979 movie Caligula. Disavowed by Vidal, the original screenwriter, Caligula had been panned by critics as a piece of hard-porn kitsch masquerading as a feature film. Vezzoli had made a trailer for a movie that didn’t exist inspired by one that was never what it pretended to be. Furthermore, he had scooped up Hollywood stars, including Helen Mirren — who had also appeared in Guccione’s film — Milla Jovovich and Benicio del Toro. Vidal himself intoned the introduction. Courtney Love popped up in a cameo as Caligula. Not only was it far more engaging than most artists’ films, the logistics were baffling. How did Vezzoli persuade his all-star cast to participate? Mirren is a busy woman. Vidal was no pushover. “Sincerity and flowers!” Vezzoli replies when I ask him, 10 years later, how he had convinced such legends to work with him.
