Scientific Foundational Objectives and Absolute Resilience – From Climate Governance to Other Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

In recent years the Science-based Targets

(SBTs) have become an emerging topic of interest Visiting Professor, Graduate Institute of in corporate sustainability. Since the launch of the Environmental Engineering and Administration, Taipei University of Science and Technology SBTi in June 2015, through to the date of publication on October 22, 2019, the project has witnessed 676 companies committing to SBT reduction measures and action, but only 276 of the corporations Hsien-Lun Hu reduction efforts have achieved SBTi certification. One can readily surmise the tremendous difficulties posed by such a challenging mission, and it is thus he abovementioned SBTs are actually only not surprising that the internationally renowned about carbon emissions (climate change) focused sustainability expert and founder of GreenBiz, scientific reduction targets. Currently, scientists Joel Makower, remarked that: “Setting a science- are exploring the concepts and elucidating the based target has become a corporate badge of theoretical constructs of the Planetary Boundary honor.” Let us consider the four stellar examples (PB), to elicit eight PB SBTs besides climate change, of Taiwan enterprises who have received SBTi including: biodiversity loss, deforestation and other certification: Delta Electronics, LITE-ON Technology, land use changes, freshwater use, particle pollution , and FarEasTone. Of course we also of the atmosphere, ozone depletion, chemical hope that five Taiwan corporations that have already pollution, ocean acidification and the nitrogen and undertaken commitments will soon join in being phosphorus cycle. Thus, this topic concerns absolute named “honored enterprises”: Yuanta Financial sustainability as an unfolding but ascendant issue, Holding, TSMC, Powertech Technology, Fubon and one with which more and more corporations in Financial Holding and AUO. the international sphere are seeking to synergize.

Hence, it is imperative that those Taiwan enterprises which are indeed among the genuine global benchmark leaders in corporate sustainability, must begin to emphasize the emerging trend of absolute sustainability, and start to appreciate how their own company’s activities and PB are interrelated, allowing them to early adopt this developing trend, and thereby strengthen their own green and sustainable competitivenenss.
