SECTION B: 51. Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow in full sentences. Every year in the month of August, Juma and his family go to his home village of Walata in Mbarara near Mt. Rwenzori. One Saturday morning on 15 th August, Juma and children were driving along Kampala – Masaka Rd. in his new Toyota Carina when 5 the car tyre rode on a sharp nail and burst. The car almost knocked a cyclist riding on the opposite side of the road as it moved from one side of the road to another. Luckily, Juma was a steady and experienced driver. He managed to steady the car until it came to a sudden stop just two metres away from the cyclist.

Juma had some tools in the toolbox in the boot of the car, but he could not repair the car tyre as he did not have adhesive and a piece of an old tyre to patch the hole. He used a spanner to unscrew the bolts and take the burst tyre off the rim. He used a ‘boda-boda’ to transport the tyre to Matoyo’s garage at Buwama where it was repaired and inflated with air. He fixed the tyre on the car and resumed the journey at around noon. Questions 1. Where was Juma going when his car tyre burst? ______2. The exercise always starts with picking forms from Mr. Pingu, the chairperson of the body that organises elections in the school. After filling the forms, the pupils wishing to stand in the elections then look for three teachers on the staff to support them by signing on the forms. The signed forms are then returned to the committee made up of seven teachers and two pupils from P. 7. The committee then writes a list of pupils allowed to contest for different posts.

Last year Balu decided to take part in the elections for prefects. He picked, filled and had his forms signed by Mr. Oto, his science teacher, Miss. Abo, his teacher of English and Mrs. Kuno, his teacher of Mathematics. He returned the forms to the organizing committee. He was lucky because the committee allowed him to contest for the post of Games Prefect.

At first Balu’s campaigns went well in P. 3, P. 4 and P.5. Things started going wrong in P. 6 when the pupils in the class asked him to tell them the game he participated in. Balu had no answer as he had none. To make matters worse, he tried to bribe the pupils with sweets. On 11 th September, which was the election day, Balu came second after losing to Ekemu, who was the captain of the school football team. Kato, the other pupil who contested for the same post came third in the election.
