And why not? Van Amburgh, in the eyes of his adoring public, defied death daily…even going so far as to put his arm or head inside a lion’s mouth. He routinely performed deeds so daring even brave, grown men might be excused if they looked away. This, however, is where Amburgh’s story turns dark…at least by today’s standards. Isaac’s so-called “knack” for training wild an- imals did not come from any great insight he had into their natural behavior. Nor did it come from his ability to induce them to voluntarily do what he wanted by offering treats as reinforcement or reward. Isaac’s method was far more direct. He brutal- ized them. His animals would do what he want- ed or be beaten and starved until they did. There are even accounts of him using a crowbar to dis- cipline unruly cats. His actions were accepted--- or ignored---by the vast majority of the general public. But if an occasional critic did speak-out, the comment was brushed aside by Isaac with the re- sponse that he was simply doing what the Lord had willed. At this point he’d quote Genesis 1- 26; “And God said, “Let Us make mankind in our image and likeness; and let them have do- minion over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, all the cattle, all the earth, and all the crea- tures that crawl on the earth." While Isaac Van Amburgh may have been hailed in the 1800s as the “The Lion King,” had he been around in 2008, he would have likely been known as Michael Vick’s cellmate. Jim lives in Live Oak

The Arc of North Florida launched its first day of programming at the Branford Library on Friday. The individuals that participated in the first day are participants in Live Oak but came down to welcome any newcomers. “We’re hoping to get a full roster with people from the Branford area,” Adults with Disabilities Supervisor Lisa Perry said. The group on Friday worked on se- quences and played a safety skills board game. They also practiced and learned a little sign language. The goal of the program is to help im- prove the quality of life of the individu- als using stimulating activities to prepare them for independent living. This pro- gram is open to adults with developmen- tal and intellectual disabilities. The Arc group meets every Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., currently at the Branford Library. The Arc plans to move into the former health building in Bran- ford sometime in October. For more in- formation on the program please contact Perry at 386-208-1404.
