The Most Holy Body and Blood of June 18, 2017

The Pastor's Corner In our north Sacristy there are two featured in the windows that face the rectory. One of them is Lydia. I chose this holy woman for two reasons. First, to honor all the women of our parish who so lovingly invest their time and talent in our various ministries and organizations. Lydia took the message to heart and acted on it immediately. The church would be lost without women like Lydia, walking the talk of faith, serving our faith community in so many ways. So it makes sense to have a woman saint in the sacristy where bishops and priests vest. Second is to honor Bishop Rodimer, a dear friend of our parish, who has a very special devotion to St. Lydia. Along the way I have asked Bishop to pray for various intentions, which he has done through the intercession of Saint Lydia. I am grateful to this holy woman for being such a powerful vessel of God's grace for all who are brought to her in prayer. Here is her story: Lydia is the first recorded person in to become a follower of Christ. She was Saint Paul's first baptized convert at . What we know of Lydia is found in the . She was from , an industrial center located in what is now western Turkey. She was a wealthy business woman; a manufacturer and seller of purple dyes and fabrics for which the city of Thyatira was noted. Lydia was part of a high value industry. Purple goods were luxury items, used by emperors, high government officials, and priests of the pagan religions. At the time of the narrative in Acts, Lydia and her household had moved to the city of Philippi, a Roman colony on the Rome-to-Asia trade route. This is where she had her first encounter with Paul on his second missionary journey about the year 50. While visiting Philippi for the first time, Paul and his party came upon Lydia and a group of women gathered by the river that ran through the city center. He sat down and shared the gospel with them. Lydia listened intently, took the gospel message to heart, and she and her family were then baptized in the river. Lydia insisted on providing hospitality to Paul and his companions, so they made their home with her while in Philippi. She continued to help them even after they were jailed and released. As a successful businesswoman, her home would have been spacious enough to welcome guests and to become a place for community gatherings and liturgies. My guess is that she stopped selling cloth to the priests of the pagan religious and started making vestments! Paul cherished the members of the Christian community at Philippi and called them his "joy and crown." Undoubtedly, Lydia's generous hospitality and leadership in the founding of this early Christian community contributed to Paul's affection. Saint Lydia's feast day is . Father, you drew St. Lydia of Thyatira to the waters of baptism by the preaching of Saint Paul; through her intercession and example help us to be faithful to our baptism by preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ not only in words but also in the ways we show our concern for one another. We pray through the same Jesus Christ our Lord.

World Refugee Day – June 20th Categories of Displaced People Please join us for Holy Hour, Tuesday, June 20 - 4:30 - 5:30 p.m. As Saint Vincent Martyr joins in the observance of World Refugee Day

More than half of the world's refugees are under age 18.

What is a refugee - a person forced to leave his/her homeland. Refugees are the most rigorously screened population coming into America. The refugee admissions process (https://www.state.gov/j/prm/ra/admissions/) can takes 18 months to more than 24 months. This screening happens before refugees ever set foot in our country. What is the size of the refugee population A) Forced displacement of people is at the highest level since World War II, with more than 65 million people displaced around the world (United States Council of Catholic Bishops Migration & Refugee Services - January 2017) B) An average of 42,500 people per day flee their homes to seek protection within the orders of their own country or other countries (Global Giving website) C) More than half of the world’s refugees are under age 18 (Global Giving website) Who are the refugees coming to the United States and where are they from? A) In fiscal 2016, the highest number of refugees coming to the US from any nation came from the Democratic Republic of Congo (16,370), followed by Syria (12,587), Burma (a.k.a. Myanmar, 12,347) (Http://www.pewresearch.org/) B) According to the US Office of Admissions Refugee Processing Center, 24,768 refugees who arrived between January 2016 and August 2016 were Muslim, while more than 30,000 - more than half were of Christian and other faiths. Where does the stand? Catholic Social Teaching - (from the United States Council of Catholic Bishops) 1. People have the right to migrate to sustain their lives and the lives of their families. 2. A country has the right to regulate its borders and to control immigration. 3. A country must regulate its borders with justice and mercy Pope Francis (Living the Gospel of Life, no. 22): "progress in building a people in peace, justice, and fraternity depends on four principles” 1) the dignity of the human person 2) the common good 3)subsidiarity and solidarity (subsidiarity = matters ought to be handled by the smallest, lowest or least centralized competent authority.) 4) a consistent ethic of life Catholic Relief Services (CRS) is an official agency of the church and provides aid on the basis of need, not creed. CRS carries out the commitment of the Bishops of the United States to assist the poor and vulnerable overseas.

Stewardship

Stewardship Prayer Reflection Father, I know that I can help in the needs of my parish, Your church. I am having trouble deciding how and where to serve You. I want to help, but the immediate needs of my family and job seem to be ever more demanding. Please help me search myself. Please help me take a good look at what I can do, both in my personal life and through Your church. Help me to steward Your gifts wisely, to cherish them lovingly, to tend to them responsibly, and to share them willingly with those in need. And most importantly Lord, help me to be that steward in a helpful way knowing that whatever I do for the least of your people, I do for you. All caring, all loving and almighty God, I pray that You will bring me to a fulfillment of good stewardship through your grace and direction. In Your holy name we pray. Amen. For additional information on Stewardship and the many ministries at St. Vincent Martyr, please email [email protected]. It is never too late to embrace a ministry of your choice!
