FINLEY DOVE: You may now be aware that Finley died quite unexpectedly at the beginning of this year. Just weeks before his death, and after mourning the death of his partner Eve, Finley threw himself into the Christmas reimaging project...helping to get 1000s of activity packs ready for distribution. He was so happy and helpful. Finley had run and developed hand bell ringing at St John’s. He had no relatives or friends that he was in touch with. Sadly he did not have the funeral service he had wanted. So we will hold a memorial com- munion for him at St John's this Friday at 11am and have some refreshments afterwards. Have Fun : Get Fit Starting Wednesday 19 May at 11am St Mary's Church We will use YouTube videos for gentle exercise and easy dance

WISDOM GROUPS: We will be reflecting on John 15:26-27

1 What word or phrase stands out for you from this short reading? 2 What image does the word Advocate bring to mind? This word literally means one who adds their voice to the voice of another or speaks on their behalf. 3 How do you feel at the thought that Jesus has sent the Holy Spirit to you? What difference does it make to think of ourselves as having personally been given the gift of the Spirit? 4 The Spirit reveals truth; about God, about Jesus, about the world, and about ourselves. (See John 16:8-11) Which of these truths are we most aware of and how does that make a difference in our lives? 5 The Spirit’s role is to testify, and we are called to testify too. How do we testify to Jesus? How might adding our voice to those of others be part of this? When Jesus speaks to the disciples about being with him from the beginning he is almost cer- tainly talking about his own earthly ministry. But is there a sense in which Jesus is with us from the beginning? Can we recognise our faith as having a beginning or was there a begin- ning to our sense that Jesus was with us?

RUSSELL JORY : in 1924-2021 Born and brought up in , Russell was a through and through Cornish man. After war ser- vice in the Royal Air Force, he became a music teacher as well as a brilliant organist. From the 70’s until 2005 he was organist and choir master of St Mary’s, during which time he raised the standard of the choir to being accepted as one of the finest church choirs in the south west. Among his outstanding organ pupils were Nicholas Marston, Leslie Bunt and John Hosking. As head of music at Penwith College he oversaw the musician training of numerous talented young musicians including the late Joyce Preston For some years he organised the St Mary’s Arts Festival, for this festival he founded the Sinfonia of St Mary’s, an amateur orchestra which attracted the finest instrumentalists in the area. He was loved by his choir, and respected and honoured throughout .
