My dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

This week we have an important Solemn Feast of Annunciation to celebrate midst of our Lenten journey. Let us reflect about it and continue to pray to St. Joseph to guide us as he guided the Holy Family.

HE MADE HIS DWELLING AMONG US

The Annunciation and the Gospel of Life

The Annunciation celebrates the visit of the angel Gabriel to the Virgin Mary to inform her that she was to be the mother of Jesus. On this great feast day, we not only recall Mary’s courageous “yes” to God, we also celebrate the Incarnation of Christ, our Savior. For it was there, in the womb of a woman, nine months before the celebration of the manger, that “the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us” (John 1:14). The celebration of the Annunciation coincides with the anniversary of the papal encyclical Evangelium vitae (The Gospel of Life). This prophetic document on the dignity and in- violability of every human life was put forth by Pope John Paul II on the Solemnity of the Annunciation in 1995. The inti- mate connection of these two events highlights a profound reality about the identity and value of every human person. Luke’s Gospel tells us that by the power of the Holy Spirit, Christ would be conceived within the womb of Mary. It was there, in the womb of the Blessed Mother, that Christ first took on human flesh and made his dwelling among us. Like us, the unborn child Jesus grew and developed beneath the shelter of his mother’s loving heart. Through Christ’s Incarnation, God chose to share fully and intimately in our humanity and bridge all distance between God and man, so that we may dwell together. The Church teaches us that “by His incarnation the Son of God has united Himself in some fashion with every man.” God desired to dwell among us, as one of us, in order to bring us salvation. This truth “reveals to humanity not only the boundless love of God... but also the incomparable value of every human person.”

Each of us is made in the image and likeness of our Creator, to share in the very life of God himself.

This reality “reveals the greatness and the inestimable value of human life.” The human person is “a manifestation of God in the world, a sign of his presence, a trace of his glory.” Created through the love of the Father, each one of us bears “an indelible imprint of God.” By sharing in our humanity, Christ invites us to share in his divinity, that we might dwell with him for eternity. Therefore, “the Gospel of God’s love for man, the Gospel of the dignity of the person and the Gospel of life are a single and indivisible Gospel.” Through Christ’s descent to earth God desires to raise each one of us to the heights of heaven. May we recognize that to proclaim the Gospel of Life is to proclaim Christ, the one who made his dwelling among us.

Year of St. Joseph

Pope Francis states that Every day, for over forty years, following Lauds I have recited a prayer to Saint Joseph taken from a nineteenth-century French prayer book of the Congregation of the Sisters of Jesus and Mary. It expresses devotion and trust, and even poses a certain challenge to Saint Joseph: Glorious Patriarch Saint Joseph, whose power makes the impossi- ble possible, come to my aid in these times of anguish and difficulty. Take under your protection the serious and troubling situations that I commend to you, that they may have a happy outcome. My beloved father, all my trust is in you. Let it not be said that I invoked you in vain, and since you can do everything with Jesus and Mary, show me that your goodness is as great as your power. Amen.

Annual Pro-Life Mass: On March 25, the Solemnity of the Annunciation, we celebrate the conception of the Lord in the womb of the Blessed Virgin. In this spirit, Bishop Flores and Bishop Mario Avilés will be celebrating a special Mass for the celebration of all life. It will be on March 25, 5:30PM at the Basilica of San Juan del Valle.

Esta semana tenemos una importante Fiesta solemne de la Anunciación para celebrar en medio de nuestro viaje de Cuaresma. Reflex- ionemos sobre ello y continuemos rezando a San José para que nos guíe en su guía a la Sagrada Familia.

Y vivió entre nosotros La Anunciación y el Evangelio de la Vida

La Anunciación celebra la visita del ángel Gabriel a la Virgen María para informarle que sería la madre de Jesús. En esta maravillosa fiesta, no solo recordamos el valiente “sí” de María a Dios, sino que también celebramos la Encarnación de Cristo, nuestro Salvador. Porque fue allí, en el vientre de una mujer, nueve meses antes de la celebración del pesebre, que “el Verbo se hizo carne, y vivió entre nosotros” (Juan 1,14). La celebración de la Anunciación coincide con el aniversario de la encíclica papal Evangelium vitae (El Evangelio de la Vida). Este documento profético sobre la dignidad y la inviolabilidad de cada vida humana fue escrito en 1995 por el papa Juan Pablo II sobre la Solemnidad de la Anunciación. La íntima conexión de estos dos acontecimientos destaca una profunda realidad sobre la identidad y el valor de cada persona humana. El Evangelio según san Lucas nos dice que, por medio del poder del Espíritu Santo, Cristo sería concebido dentro del vientre de Ma- ría. Fue allí, en el vientre de la Santísima Madre, que Cristo pri- mero se hizo carne y vivió entre nosotros. Como nosotros, el niño nonato Jesús creció y se desarrolló bajo el refugio del corazón amo- roso de su madre. Por medio de la Encarnación de Cristo, Dios eligió compartir plena e íntimamente nuestra humanidad y crear un puente entre Dios y el hombre, para que podamos vivir juntos. La Iglesia nos enseña que “el Hijo de Dios con su encarnación se ha unido, en cierto modo, con todo hombre.”1 Dios deseaba vivir entre nosotros, como uno de nosotros, para traernos la salvación. En esta verdad “se revela a la humanidad no solo amor infinito de Dios... sino también el valor incomparable de cada persona humana.”2 Cada uno de nosotros está hecho a imagen y semejanza de nuestro Creador para compartir la vida de Dios. Esta realidad “manifiesta la grandeza y valor de la vida humana”.3 La persona humana “es manifestación de Dios en el mundo, signo de su presencia, resplen- dor de su gloria”.4 creados por el amor del Padre, cada uno de no- sotros lleva “una huella indeleble de Dios”.5 Al compartir nuestra humanidad, Cristo nos invita a compartir su divinidad para que podamos vivir con él por toda la eternidad. Por lo tanto, “el Evangelio del amor de Dios al hombre, el Evan- gelio de la dignidad de la persona y el Evangelio de la vida son el único e indivisible Evangelio.”6 Por medio del descenso de Cristo a la tierra, Dios nos eleva a las alturas del cielo. Que podamos reconocer que proclamar el Evangelio de la vida es proclamar a Cristo, aquel que vivió entre nosotros.

La Liturgia de la Palabra Ésta comienza a partir de la Oración colecta. En las lecturas que se proclaman, “Dios habla a su pueblo, le descubre el misterio de la redención y salvación, y le ofrece el alimento espiritual; y el mismo Cristo, por su palabra, se hace presente en medio de los fieles”, (IGMR, 55). La actual estructura de la Liturgia de la Palabra en la que se proclama la primera lectura del Antiguo Testamento (excepto durante la Pascua), la segunda lectura del Nuevo Testamento y, posteriormente el Evangelio, responde a la estructura misma de la liturgia en las sinagogas judías que probablemente surgieron durante el destierro (586-539 a.C.), pues eran los lugares indicados para la oración. El Salmo Responsorial, la Homilía, el Credo y las Intercesiones Generales, también son parte de la Liturgia de la Palabra.
