New Book Provides Fundamentals Needed to Design Effi cient Braking Systems

By Rudolf Limpert The objectives of this third edition of an SAE classic title are to provide readers with the basic theoretical fundamentals and analytical tools necessary to design braking systems for passenger vehicles and trucks that comply with safety standards, minimize consumer complaints, and perform safely and effi ciently before and while electronic brake controls become active.

Written for students, engineers, forensic experts, and brake technicians, this book offers numerous illustrations and equations that make the information easy to understand and apply.

New to this edition are expanded chapters on: • Thermal analysis of automotive brakes • Analysis of hydraulic brake systems • Single vehicle braking dynamics Order today! SAE Update 31 December 2011 Awards SAE Fellows recognized at industry conferences

Five of the 29 members of the 2010-11 class of Fellows were recognized this fall at major industry conferences or at a venue pertaining to their industry. This was the first time newly elected Fellows were permitted to select which major conference to be honored at for this prestigious accom- plishment. The majority of Fellows will continue to be recognized at the SAE World Congress. Galina Susova was honored before a “class” of her peers at the Moscow State Technical University (MAMI) in Moscow, Russia, on Aug. 15. SAE Presi- dent Richard Kleine attended and awarded her the SAE Fellows certificate and pin. Kleine was recognized and presented his SAE Fellow certificate in front of his peers at the Opening Ceremony of the 2011 SAE Commercial Vehicle Con- ference on Sept. 13. Three 2010 Fellows—Michael Dudzik, Greg Henderson, and Marc Par- ent—were honored at the 2011 AeroTech Congress & Exhibition in Toulouse, France. They were honored at the AeroTech Banquet on Oct. 19. Each re- ceived their framed Fellows certificate and pin during this event. Following are bios of these five distinguished Fellows: • Michael C. Dudzik, Vice President–Science & Tech- nology, Washington Operations/Corporate, Lockheed Martin Corp., leads the corporation’s efforts in building a network of business and technical relationships within federal science, engineering, and technology communi- ties. Focusing on mid- and long-term research initiatives (i.e., fundamental research, discovery, and system con- cept invention), he is responsible for identifying emerg- ing technologies and opportunities within the university, small business, and federally funded research and devel- opment centers.

SAE Update 32 December 2011 • Greg W. Henderson recently retired from Lock- heed Martin Aeronautics Co. as Director, Weight Man- agement and Control. Previous appointments at Lock- heed Martin included Chief of Metallic Materials and Processes (M&P), Senior Manager of M&P, Senior Man- ager of Design, Deputy Chief Engineer of the F-16 Pro- gram, Director of Weight Management and Control for the F-35 program, and Director of the F-35 Electrohy- drostatic Actuation System. In 2006, Henderson served as President of SAE International. • Richard E. Kleine, Vice President, Quality and Busi- ness Enterprise, MidRange Engine Business, Cummins Inc., has held various leadership positions in engineer- ing and marketing throughout his 30-year career at Cummins. Prior to his current role, he was the Vice Presi- dent of Cummins’ Off Highway Business Group. He is
