Forum Proceedings "Safety of Navigation in Cook Inlet" September 9 & 10, 1999 Forum Proceedings "Safety of Navigation in Cook Inlet" September 9 & 10, 1999 Homer, Alaska Sponsored by Cook Inlet Regional Citizens Advisory Council Co-Sponsored by Tesoro Unocal Oil Spill Recovery Institute Cover artwork donated by Jim Evenson Preface This publication presents a summary of panel presentations and discussions that took place during the "Safety of Navigation in Cook Inlet" Forum held in Homer, Alaska on September 9-10, 1999. The Forum was organized and hosted by the Cook Inlet Regional Citizens Advisory Council (RCAC) with additional funding provided by the Oil Spill Recovery Institute, Tesoro, and Unocal. The primary goal of the Safety of Navigation in Cook Inlet Forum was to bring together all the parties involved in marine transportation in Cook Inlet and identify steps that can be taken to prevent spilled oil. Cook Inlet is a key factor in the economy of the state of Alaska. The 220-mile long waterway serves as a marine highway for many types of vessels: oil tankers, log ships, bulk fuel carriers, LNG vessels, cargo ships, ferries, and cruise ships all rely on Cook Inlet to serve over 80 percent of the states population. Many of these vessels carry large amounts of oil, either as cargo or as bunker fuel, and they present real risks for a major oil spill. The Cook Inlet RCAC's mission is to promote environmentally safe marine transportation and the Forum was a step in that direction. At the time this Forum was taking place, Secretary Rodney Slater, U.S.

On that ship were 100 passengers, including Anne Hutchinson who would play a part in his life. Most on the Griffin were likely followers of Reverend John Cotton who had already made his way to Boston. On the Cyrus Bates & passenger list was the Reverend Jonathan Lothrop who had conducted Lydia Harrington separatist services in Edgerton, Kent and London, and the Rev. Zachariah Symmes of Canterbury, Kent. From The Planters of the Commonwealth by Ormus Ephraim Bates Charles Edward Banks: Arlin Henry Bates & It is a puzzle to imagine what things occupied the time of these Luvena Abigail Adams emigrants for ten weeks on the crowded decks of the small vessels which took them across the three thousand miles that lay between the Lyman Lester Bates & continents. Even to-day with our many permitted diversions time hangs Sarah Edith Lee heavily. Certainly those residents of the rural hamlets left nothing of interest behind them, and so missed nothing in their drab lives when Bulletin Board exchanging their pithless parochial existence ashore for the monotonous doldrums of a swaying deck at sea. Ships carrying Bates Place Bulletin religious groups, like the Mayflower or the Arbella, indulged in daily Board services when their spiritual leaders 'exercised' the Godly in prayer and Other Lines sermon. We can readily believe that Mistress Anne Hutchinson furnished enough excitement aboard the Griffin when she engaged the Tuttle Reverend John Lothrop and the Reverend Zachariah Symmes in by Sam Behling theological bouts, but these were exceptional ships, as the vast majority of emigrants came without ministerial leaders to entertain them.

Merchant Fleet Four* Times Larger Than Before War ~ Inland Rivers Proved*Important In Wartime Armed Services Return* Ships to WSA Vol. IX MARCH, 1946 No.3 l The Biggest Day of Your Life Is Today Most people want to do big things. They dream of the day when their real powers will blossom forth in all their glory, and something big will be done. The great trouble about waiting to do the big things is, the years are piling up and nothing is being done. The day is not far away when one's powers to accomplish will be unequal to one's ambitions, and the dream will remain a dream-un filled and unattained. To sit by the dead embers of unrealized dreams is poor comfort for the years to come, and a sad commentary upon one's record of aspirations and achievements. The big thing can be done by most of us who dream in terms of successful accomplishment. How? It doesn't take a prophet to disclose the secret. Just ordi· nary sense and understanding of life will point the way to big achieve ment-DO IT TODAY. Do the little things that lie in our way that must be done-do them now, for the little things well done are the foundations of the bigger things we crave to do.
