Student Mentoring/ additional information: The recently approved MFA Degree will gradually work its way into the various programs in our department. Since I have taught only undergraduate majors in our ceramics area, interactive research with students is not a regular occurrence; in other words, students do not generally assist me with my research efforts. Student mentoring takes form in ways other than those in departments that have well established graduate programs. My mentoring is spelled out in the Results of Student Mentoring: Ceramics Student Accomplishments list found in this dossier. Teaching Load:

Years Teaching Load Office Hours 2001‐2014 3 scheduled class times= 3 credit hours each class. Each class has 5 hours 6 contact hours per week per class for a total of 18 contact per hours; the TLE (Teaching Load Equivalent) is 12 hours. week

Classes taught: Art 212‐Ceramics I‐ 2 sections per semester Art 312‐Ceramics II Art 313‐Ceramics III and IV Art 314‐Special Topics in Ceramics  Investigating Wood‐Fired Kiln Building (Spring 2011)  Ceramics Glaze Surfaces (Fall 2010)  Kiln Building/ Co‐taught with Kevin Hughes (Fall 2009) Art 399‐ Individual Instruction in Ceramics Unscheduled Teaching 8 to 10 hours per week

Fall 2003 On sabbatical leave Academic year 2011‐12 On sabbatical leave

Teaching Load/ additional information and further explanation: Since 1987, I have taught in the area of ceramics in Art and Design. We are largely an undergraduate department and have had no graduate level programs, except in Art Education, until recently. However, the University and CBHE have granted our department an MFA in Visual Studies program, which will eventually include several areas of study, including ceramics.

While the MFA degree will soon impact my teaching load, I currently have three scheduled class times each of which are for three credit hours and have six contact hours per class for a total of eighteen contact hours per week; the TLE is twelve hours. The Art 212 Ceramics I classes meet independent of other levels. The advanced 300 level classes (312, 313, 314, 399) are usually combined sections of intermediate and advanced classes meeting together, which results in more than one preparation per class period. All of the studio (or lab‐based) classes are structured so that a significant amount of one‐ on‐one teaching can take place between students and professor for six hours per week per class.

Unscheduled teaching: 8 to 10 hours per week. These activities take place constantly outside of scheduled class‐time and average eight to ten hours per week and sometimes more near midterm and finals. In order to safely and effectively run the ceramics studio, this time must be given to a wide array of duties including assisting students in safely operating gas and electric kilns, equipment maintenance and material preparation.

Reassigned Time: There is very little reassigned time in our department regarding teaching and research but is given for a couple of departmental administrative positions. Since being promoted to Full Professor in 2001, I have therefore received no re‐assigned time for research activities or projects, but have received two sabbatical leaves (for the academic year 2011‐12 and fall semester 2003) and three Summer Faculty Fellowships (2014, 2010, 2005). Student Evaluations The following tables show the results of what I think are the three most important questions from our department student evaluation materials that focus on teaching effectiveness and preparedness. My mean scores for these, and other, questions were better than the departmental mean and were all better than 2.5. Scoring is as follows: 1=High, 5 =Low Question #3: “The instructor demonstrated a thorough knowledge of the subject matter.” Department mean: For 200 level courses=1.23, for 300 level = 1.33 Sp F Sp F Sp F Sp F Sp F Sp F Sp F Sp F Sp F Sp Sp F S 14 13 13 12 11 10 10 09 09 08 08 07 07 06 06 05 05 04 04 03 02 0 Art 1.38 1.22 1.22 1.10 1.31 1.00 N/A 1.78 1.10 1.33 1.33 1.00 1.44 N/A 1.14 1.10 1.08 1.71 1.18 1.13 1.10 1 212 001 Art 1.18 1.33 1.08 1.41 1.25 1.00 N/A 1.77 1.30 1.14 1.15 1.08 1.27 N/A 1.14 1.33 1.15 1.18 1.15 1.07 1.14 1 212 002
