Piano proficiency : All majors must pass a piano proficiency examination prior to the junior year. All or part of the four-credit piano requirement may be waived depending on demonstrated piano proficiency. Transfer students are recommended to begin applied piano courses prior to transfer.

Large Ensemble : All music majors are required to participate in at least one large ensemble each semester while in full-time residence. Combined residency and transfer ensemble credits must equal at least 8 semester credits. Approved large ensemble courses from Santiago Canyon College: MUS 135, 136, 137

Science : Transfer students in the bachelor of music program, with the exception of music education majors, will be waived from the science requirement by CSU or IGETC certification. Music Education majors are required to complete PHYS 203 Acoustics of Music or an approved course in transfer.

Foreign Language : The foreign language requirement is restricted to French, German or Italian. Complete at least a 102 level course in one of the following languages. In addition to the foreign language component of the Chapman Common Requirement, Vocal Performance majors are required to take an additional six semester credits of foreign language which must be selected from one or a combination of the languages listed. For music therapy majors or guitar performance majors, Spanish is acceptable. Keyboard Collaborative Arts emphasis requires only 3 credits of additional language credit (French, German or Italian) in addition to the Chapman Common Requirement.
