Last Match UTRGV Falls to South Dakota State in Season Opener Aug. 22, 2021 at Fishback Soccer Park – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women’s soccer team fell 3-1 to the South Dakota State Jackrabbits in their season opener on Sunday at Fishback Soccer Park. The Jackrabbits (2-0-0) jumped out to the early1-0 lead as Cece Limongi scored the match’s first goal in the ninth minute. Minutes later, Eden Brooker made it 2-0 Jackrabbits with a goal in the 15th minute as she knocked it in off the crossbar. The Vaqueros (0-1-0) quickly answered back as freshman Libby Beilfuss delivered a cross into the box and found junior Shentatious Knox, who flicked into the left corner of the goal to cut the Jackrabbits’ lead 2-1. The Jackrabbits added another goal in the second half as Maya Hansen snuck one into the goal in the 59th minute to put the match out of reach for the Vaqueros. UTRGV was outshot 13 to 12 by South Dakota State with both teams posting six shots on goal. The Aggies (5-12-1) outshot the Vaqueros (10-7-2) 16 to 11 and 9 to 6 on goal. The Aggies started the scoring in the 28th minute as Xitlaly Hernandez curved one into the corner of the goal past diving redshirt junior Maile Lunardi (9-6-2) for the 1-0 lead. Steiner Strikes Twice to Lead UTRGV Past Chicago State Apr. 9, 2021 at SeatGeek Stadium – Senior Gina Steiner scored two goals to lead The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women’s soccer team to a 3-1 victory over the Cougars in the regular season finale on Friday at Seat Geek Stadium. This was Steiner’s second-career multi-goal game and first on the road after previously scoring twice against New Mexico State on Oct. 28, 2017. Steiner opened the scoring in the 12th minute on assists by freshman Mari Liis Lillemae and junior Emily Zapata. Steiner then completed the scoring in the 79th minute off a feed by sophomore Anna Torslov. Steiner now has five goals this season. In-between, Barbara Castellanos tied the match at 1 for the Cougars (0-16, 0-14 WAC) off a pass from Gisselle Sahagun. Lillemae scored the game-winning goal in the 54th minute. Lillemae now has two goals this season, both of which have been game-winners. The Vaqueros outshot the Cougars 29-7, including 15-4 on goal. Junior Maile Lunardi (9-5-2) made three saves. UTRGV Secures Fifth-Straight Winning Season with Win Over Dixie State Apr. 6, 2021 at Greater Zion Stadium – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women’s soccer team secured its fifth- straight winning season with a 3-0 victory over the on Tuesday at Greater Zion Stadium. The Vaqueros (9-6-2, 6-6-1 WAC) have won at least eight matches in each of the seasons going back to 2016 posting a 9-8-3 record in 2019, 12-6-3 in 2018, 9-8-3 in 2017 and 10-8-1 in 2016. UTRGV got all the scoring it needed in the first half as junior Emily Zapata scored her sixth goal of the season in the 12th minute for the 1-0 lead. It is Zapata’s fourth game-winning goal of the season and the 13th of her career. Sophomore Anna Torslov score her second goal of the season as she took the pass from junior Kryssie Rivera and snuck it past Dixie State (3-9-2, 3-6-1 WAC) goalie Adelle Brown in the 81st minute giving UTRGV the 2-0 lead.
