UNLV opens its 46th season of football by traveling to the North Star State for the fi rst time ever, taking on Minnesota in a special Thursday night matchup ... Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. PT as the Rebels will make their fi rst appearance on the Big Ten Network (BTN) ... This marks the second consecutive year that the Rebels open early on the fi rst day of the season against the Golden Gophers and the fourth straight year that UNLV debuts against a Big Ten Confer- ence opponent as it played at Wisconsin in 2011 and hosted the Badgers to start the 2010 campaign ... The Rebels are 22-23 all-time in season lid-lifters, including 5-15 when opening on the road ... UNLV boasts an 8-6 record on Thursday games (see Page 2 graphic) ... UNLV will play a game in the month of August for the eighth time in history ... The Rebels are 3-4 in August and have won three of their last four pre-Labor Day outings ... UNLV has played on Aug. 29 just one other time and defeated Toledo 28-18 at home in 2003 ... UNLV is 2-12 all-time vs. current Big Ten teams: 0-1 vs. Minnesota, 2-8 vs. Wisconsin, 0-2 vs. Northwestern and 0-1 vs. Nebraska, which was a member the Big 8 at the time of the 1988 game ... The Rebels will face another team from the league when they travel to Michigan on Sept. 19, 2015 ... The Gophers and Rebels have two common opponents this season as each will host both FCS program Western Illinois and new Mountain West member San Jose State this fall . REBELS vs. GOLDEN GOPHERS NOTES... UNLV’s trip to Minneapolis was originally scheduled to happen in 2009 before the series was pushed back ... UNLV head coach Bobby Hauck holds a 1-1 record vs. Minnesota’s Jerry Kill as Hauck’s Montana team downed Kill’s Southern Illinois squad 20-6 in the quarterfi nals of the 2006 NCAA FCS playoffs ... While the Rebels are looking for their fi rst win over the Gophers, one UNLV player has two to his credit. RB Adonis Smith sat out last year after transfer- ring from Northwestern and the Wildcats went 2-0 against Minnesota while he was in Evanston. In the 2011 game, Smith rushed 10 times for 31 yards after logging just two carries for one yard in the previous fall’s matchup ... Minnesota senior DB Brock Vereen’s father is former Rebel WR-RB Henry “Varoom” Vereen (1975-78) and his mother, Venita, played tennis at UNLV (1978-81) ... Interestingly, these two programs share a former head coach as former Rebel head man Jeff Horton (1994-98) served as interim head coach of the Gophers at the end of the 2010 season, going 2-3 after replacing Tim Brewster.
